HEBREWS 2:1-3
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, LEST WE DRIFT AWAY. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.
Your response...
Does "drift away" mean "lose salvation"? This is not what the verse says. It sounds to me like the verse is simply warning of the danger of hearing the Gospel and not responding to it with a saving faith.
Does "drift away mean to "lose salvation" Depends if we stay away. The within scripture CONTEXT of "LEST WE DRIFT AWAY" or FALL AWAY from the truth is; v1 "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard" If you drift away from the things we have heard is falling or drifting away from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD. If we FALL AWAY and stay away from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD then we are "UNBELIVERS" and we know that "UNBELIEVERS" have no part in God's KINGDOM *REVELATIONS 21:7-8.

God promises to never leave and forsake us. God's WORD however teaches that we can leave and forsake God. It is by NOT BELIEVING God's WORD that we depart or fall away from following God...

HEBREWS 3:12-13 [12], TAKE HEED BROTHERS (the WARNING), LEST THERE BE IN ANY OF YOU AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF, DEPARTING FROM THE LIVING GOD. [13], But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

HEBREWS 10:26-31
26, FOR IT WE SIN WILLFULLY AFTER WE RECEIVE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH, THERE REMAINS NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SINS,
27, BUT A FEARFUL LOOKING FORWARD FOR OF JUDGEMENT AND FIERY INDIGNATION, WHICH SHALL DEVOUR THE ADVERSARIES.
28, He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29, OF HOW MUCH MORE SORER PUNISHMENT, SUPPOSE YOU, SHALL HE BE THOUGHT WORTHY, WHO HAS TRODDEN UNDER FOOT THE SON OF GOD, AND HAS COUNTED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WITH WHICH HE WAS SANCTIFIED AN UNHOLY THING AND HAS DONE DESPITE TO THE SPIRIT OF GRACE?
30,
For we know him that has said, Vengeance belongs to me, I will recompense, said the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
31, IT IS A FEARFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD.
Your response...
What is verse 26 describing? Is "receiving a knowledge of the truth" tantamount to salvation? No.

God's WORD says; Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *ROMANS 10:17.
If we have no Word we have no KNOWLEDGE and if we have no KNOWLEDGE we have no faith. Of course having a KNOWLEDGE of the truth is paramount to salvation.

HOSEA 4:5 [6], MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE; BECAUSE YOU HAVE REJECTED KNOWLEDGE (God's Word), I WILL ALSO REJECT YOU, that you shall be no priest to me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

There are too many scriptures to list here brother. Do a word study on KNOWLEDGE.
As I pointed out in my last post, one of the things that characterizes a false convert is a knowledge of the Gospel but no true heart-level trusting in Christ. And when this is the case, when the Gospel is known but not taken seriously, sin crowds in and the sacrifice of Christ at Calvary is made impotent. All that is left to one who has known but spurned the Gospel is the fiery judgment of eternal hell, made more "fearful" by the willful rejection of the way of salvation. Such a person is guilty not merely of sin but, in rejecting the Gospel, of treading underfoot the Son of God, treating the shed blood of Christ as an unholy thing, and despising the Spirit of grace. In all of this there is no doctrine of a believer losing salvation but a description of the consequences of the lost rejecting the way of salvation they have come to know.
Your talking about something different now. You cannot have one without the other. You cannot know God without God's WORD because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *ROMANS 10:17. What your talking about here is knowing God's WORD without following God's WORD. The difference between the two is FAITH. Saving FAITH is BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD and is the work of GOD in all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD. UNSAVING FAITH is to believe but not follow. We cannot have saving faith brother if we do not know God's WORD. HEBREWS 10:26-27 states that; v26 IF WE (BELIEVERS) RECEIVE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH AND WILLFULLY CONTINUE IN SIN THERE IS NO MORE FORGIVENESS OF SIN (SACRIFICE) because those doing so are counting God's GRACE and the blood of the covenant an UNHOLY thing v29. These WARNINGS once again are to BELIEVERS brother not unbelievers.

Getting a little long here. Will make a new post for the rest of yours.

Hope this helps.

ISAIAH 59:1-3
1, Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2, BUT YOUR INIQUITIES HAVE SEPARATED BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR GOD, AND YOUR SINS HAVE HID HIS FACE FROM YOU THAT HE WILL NOT HEAR.
3, For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with SIN; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perverseness.

Seems Isaiah agrees with Peter and Paul that SIN can separate us from GOD.
Your response...
Of course sin separates us all from God. This is why we all need to be saved! Isaiah is not saying, however, that a born-again believer can be saved and then lost. Such an idea is no where present in his words above. Israel often strayed from Jehovah but God never utterly rejected them, casting off any further relationship with His Chosen People. No, He disciplined His wayward people - sometimes very severely - but he continued with them, preserving them as His own even in the midst of their sin.
It depends on what you mean by chosen people. God's people have always only ever been a remnant and always will be *ROMANS 9:27; ROMANS 11:1-5; REVELATION 12:17. These are those that we are discussing now and that is all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD are God's children. UNBELIEVERS have never been God's people because they do not BELIEVE and FOLLOW Gods WORD. They have the faith of devils. Only those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD in the "present tense" are God's people. Those who have once followed God and FALL AWAY and not longer BELIEVE and FOLLOW Gods' WORD are not his people *EZEKIEL 18:20-28; HEBREWS 6:4-8. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth *JOHN 4:23-24. To be "BORN AGAIN" only means to BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD through the SPIRIT. ISAIAH is saying that SIN will separate us from GOD. If we SIN when we are BELIEVERS or UNBELIEVERS it makes no difference as shown in EXEKIEL 3 and 18...

EZEKIEL 18:4 [4], Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, it shall die.

EZEKIEL 18:24 [24], But WHEN THE RIGHTOUESS TURNS AWAY FROM HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS AND COMMITS INIQUITY AND DOES ACCORDING TO ALL THE ABOMINATIONS THAT THE WICKEN MAN DOES, SHALL HE LIVE? ALL HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT HE HAS DONE SHALL BE FORGOTTEN; IN HIS TRESSPASS THAT HE HAS TRESSPASSED AND IN THE SIN THAT HE HAS SINNED, IN THEM HE SHALL DIE.

LoveGodsWord said:
EZEKIEL 3:17-21
[17], Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
[18], When I say to the wicked, You shall surely die; and you give him not warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at your hand.
[19], Yet if you warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.
[20], AGAIN, WHEN A RIGHTEOUS MAN DOES TURN FROM HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND COMMIT INIQUITY, AND I LAY A STUMBLING BLOCK BEFORE HIM, HE SHALL DIE IN HIS SIN, AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH HE HAS DONE SHALL NOT BE REMEMBERED; but his blood I will require from your hand.
[21], Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also you have delivered your soul.

Well there we have it Ezekial, Isaiah Peter and Paul all agree that you can know God and have a KNOWLEDGE of the TRUTH and fall away back into SIN.
Your resoponse...
??? Neither Ezekiel nor Isaiah had any idea of the relationship the born-again believer has with God. There was no righteous man in the time of the OT who was a genuinely saved man, who had the Almighty Spirit of God dwelling constantly within, bringing spiritual regeneration and the new, transformative life in Christ. Thinking, then, that Paul and these OT prophets were all promoting a saved-and-lost doctrine badly misunderstands Scripture. This is true for all of the other OT passages you cite. The righteous man of the OT was not - could not - be the born-again believer of the NT.
Well that is not true brother. Who is a BORN AGAIN believer? How does one become born again? What do you mean there was no RIGHTEOUS men in OLD TESTAMENT TIMES? The very scripture you are responding to in EZEKIEL 3:20 is talking about a RIGHTEOUSS MAN turning to sin.

Hi LoveGodsWord, thank you for your encouraging words.

Having walked with the Lord for over 30 years now and hearing both sides of the debate (and researching the scriptures feverishly), my personal opinion is this:

We are saved and forgiven when we choose to believe Jesus for what He did for us on the cross, thereby accepting God's free gift of salvation by faith. The only way I can see an individual becoming "unsaved" would be if they no longer choose to believe Jesus for what He did for them on the cross, since He is the only means for salvation. But even THAT view has issues...lol!

God never forces us into the Kingdom and He doesn't push us out. He always wants people to repent and be saved (2 Peter 3:9), but the choice is always up to us to either accept or reject it at any given time. That is why I love 1 John 5:11-13 which says, "And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God."

It's all about belief/faith in Jesus...:)
Thanks brother 3Contendforthefaith, for sharing. What do you think causes someone to fall away from believing and following God's Word in your view?

LoveGodsWord said: I also agree that a "TRUE BELIEVER" in the "present tense" of application has and walks in God's Spirit through faith. These are God's children and true disciples. As it is written...

JOHN 8:31-36
[31], Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, IF YOU CONTINUE IN MY WORD , THEN ARE YOU MY DISCIPLES INDEED;
[32], And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
[33], They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free?
[34], Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin.
[35], And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the Son stays ever.
[36], If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

Notice here that these promises are condtional on continuing to believe and follow God's Word; Those who continue in God's WORD have the promises of

1. KNOWING GOD'S TRUTH v32
2. FAITH IN THE TRUTH MAKING THEM FREE v32
3. FREEDOM IS FROM SIN NOT TO CONTINUE IN SIN v34-36

Where is the scripture that says a born again christian cannot fall away from the faith and no longer believe and follow Gods Word? Yet the scriptures in God's WORD clearly teach that those who have received God's Spirit can indeed fall away and grieve the Spirit of God as demonstrated in HEBREWS 6:4-8 not to mention the many warning all through the NEW COVENANT that warn believers against falling away from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD (eg see OP).
Your response...
Well, hang on, now. What did Jesus say would be the consequence of continuing in his word? Discipleship. Those who continued in his teachings would be his disciples, that is, his followers and students. Did Jesus say that being his disciple was tantamount to being saved? No. It wouldn't be until after he had sacrificed himself on the cross of Calvary that salvation would be available to those to whom he was speaking in the passage above. So, the Jews who had believed he was the Messiah of prophecy and were following him as their Rabbi were not born-again people. This is why Jesus speaks to them only of discipleship, a thing common among the Jews, telling them what they already knew, which was that to continue in his teachings was to be his disciple. You see, a disciple of a Jewish rabbi in NT times would embark upon a life of radical emulation of his rabbi, speaking as the rabbi spoke, wearing the style of clothing of the rabbi, even walking as the rabbi walked, and so on. When Jesus spoke to the Jews who had believed in him of discipleship, it was something they understood very well, and they recognized in Jesus' words to them an invitation to enter into a student-rabbi relationship.
The rest of the passage where Jesus goes back and forth with the Jews about bondage and freedom is not a teaching about lost salvation but about the bondage into which sin brings every sinner and the freedom from that bondage that can be found in Christ. Jesus was not threatening lost salvation but pointing to who he would be as the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

JOHN 8:31-36 is showing that the conditons for being God's children is in CONTINUING in his WORD v31. JESUS is indeed stating that CONTINUING to BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD is a CONDITION of SALVATION. The PROMISE of those who CONTINUE in God's WORD is that we will be his 1.DISCIPLES v31; 2. We will KNOW THE TRUTH of God's WORD v32; and 3. THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE FROM SIN v36. This is also supported elsewhere in the scriptures *JOHN 17:17 [17], SANCTIFY [ἁγιάζω TO MAKE HOLY] THEM THROUGH THE TRUTH; YOUR WORD IS TRUTH. JESUS is saying that SALVATION from SIN comes as we CONTINUE to BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD *JOHN 8:31-36.

Hope this helps..

LoveGodsWord said: Where is the scripture that says a born again christian cannot fall away from the faith and no longer believe and follow Gods Word?
Your response...
Philippians 1:6
6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

What God began in saving a person He has promised He will bring to successful completion. Salvation is God's work, not ours. He draws a person to Christ (John 6:44), He gives faith to believe (Romans 12:3), He imparts repentance (2 Timothy 2:25), and He saves us (Romans 5:10). And what God has accomplished in us He does not leave to us to sustain but will Himself "complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." A genuinely born-again believer, then, cannot be unborn-again, a believer cannot lose salvation, because his salvation is not believer-dependent but God-dependent.

AS shown in JOHN 8:31-36 already. This promise as well as all of God's promises are CONDITIONAL on CONTINUING in God's WORD, BELIEVING and FOLLOWING GOD in the "PRESENT TENSE". The scripture you have provided here does not say that God's people or BORN again christians cannot FALL AWAY from God's WORD and no longer BELIEVE and FOLLOW it does it? You have provied no scripture here brother that says God's people cannot fall away from from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD. This promise is only CONDITIONAL on those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD as shown in JOHN 8:31-36.

Your interpretation of the scriptures above contradicts other scriptures throughout Gods Word..

HEBREWS 6:4-8 [4], For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5], And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6], If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. [7], For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes oft on it, and brings forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God:
[8], But that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and is near to cursing; whose end is to be burned.

HEBREWS 3:7-19 [7], Why (as the Holy Ghost said, To day if you will hear his voice, [8], Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
[9], When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.[10], Why I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. [11], So I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.
[12], TAKE HEED BRETHEREN LEST THERE BE IN ANY OF YOU AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF DEPARTING FROM THE LIVING GOD.
[13], But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
[14], For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end;
[15], While it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
[16], For some, when they had heard, did provoke: however, not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
[17], But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?
[18], And to whom swore he that they should not enter into his rest, BUT TO THEM THAT BELIEVED NOT?
[19], So we see that they could not enter in BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF.

To many more scriptures to list...
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

God is perfectly faithful, not vacillating in His fidelity toward us, moving closer and withdrawing in tandem with our success or failure in obeying Him. No, God knows we aren't like Him, we aren't faithful as He is, and so He takes it upon Himself to sanctify us, and to preserve us blameless in Christ until the Last Day. In this He will remain constant, perfectly faithful, even when we are not. And so, we may be always confident in our salvation, knowing it rests upon a faithful God, not upon our own weak, ignorant, sin-prone powers.
Indeed once again here, AS shown in JOHN 8:31-36 already. This promise is only CONDITIONAL on those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD as shown in JOHN 8:31-36
John 10:27-29 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.

This passage deflates entirely, I think, the notion that a person can hand back their salvation to God. "No one" encompasses everyone - including the believer who thinks he can return his own salvation to God. Salvation is a work of God. He initiates the process of salvation for every person who is saved. God doesn't wait on those "dead in trespasses and sins" and "alienated and enemies in their minds" toward Him to seek Him out for salvation. If He did, no one would ever be saved. No, in saving us, God acts quite contrary to our natural sinful inclination, initially acting entirely independently of what we want. And He continues to act toward us on this basis, regardless of what we might desire, refusing to let go of any He has adopted into His family. Thus, a genuinely born-again believer may be fully confident in the permanency of their salvation.
JOHN 10:27-29 is using a parable to describe God's people as sheep. The very first verse 26 defines Gods' SHEEP and agrees with what has been shared here in this OP while the preceeding verse you left out defines who are not God's Sheep. Let's look at them...

JOHN 10:26-27 [26], But YOY BELIEVE NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT OF MY SHEEP, as I said to you. [27], MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE AND I KNOW THEM AND THE FOLLOW ME.

The CONTEXT here defines who GOD's Sheep are and who are NOT God's sheep. God's Sheep are all those who HEAR GOD'S WORD and FOLLOW it v27. Those who DO NOT hear God's WORD and follow it are not His Sheep. These scriptures are only supporting what has been shared with you in the OP here.
Hebrews 13:5 5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

Here is another promise of God's enduring fidelity toward us. He will never - not ever - leave us nor forsake us. God does not break His promises.
The scripture says God will never leave us. The "US" here being BELIEVERS and FOLLOWERS of God's WORD. Note the the scriptures here do not say that we cannot stop believing and FORSAKE God. We can indeed FORSAKE GOD even if he does not forsake us *ISAIAH 59:2; EZEKIEL 18:20-24; DEUTERONOMY 28:20; JUDGES 10-13; 1 SAMUEL 8:8; 1 KINGS 11:33; 2 KINGS 22:17; 2 CHRONICLES 12:5; 32:25; JEREMIAH 1:16; JEREMIAH 2:13; JEREMIAH 5:7; JEREMIAH 15:16; 16:11 etc etc.. not to mention all the FALLING AWAY scriptures.. Your scripture does not support your interpretation of it and contradicts both the OLD and NEW TESTAMENT.

Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Here Paul explicitly indicates that salvation is not a product of our good works. We are saved entirely independently of a righteous life. And this remains the truth even after we are saved. And so, a believer never has to fear that their sin will dissolve their salvation.
No one said that salvation is by work. Not sure what this scripture has to do with falling away from God's WORD and no longer BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD, becoming an "UNBELIEVER" and losing salvation??? It doesn't does it. The scripture here does not say anywhere that sin will not dissolve salvation now does it? This statement contradicts the scriptures in *HEBREWS 10:26-31; HEBREWS 6:4-8; 1 JOHN 2:1-4; 1 JOHN 3:3-10
2 Timothy 1:9
9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,

Again, Paul indicates that our salvation is in Christ, not in our works. And since Christ is eternally accepted by God, and we are in him by faith, we, too, are eternally "accepted in the Beloved." (Ephesians 1:6-7)
Once again no one has ever stated anywhere that our salvation is by works. This has nothing to do with falling away or what we are talking about or does it support any claims that you have made about BELIEVERS not falling away as shown in the scriptures provided in the OP.
Titus 3:5-7 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Here, too, Paul repeats that our works have nothing to do with whether or not we are saved. And since they have nothing to do with being saved, they have nothing to do with remaining saved. Salvation is, as I said, God-dependent, not us-dependent.
Once again no one has ever stated anywhere that our salvation is by works. This has nothing to do with falling away or what we are talking about or does it support any claims that you have made about BELIEVERS not falling away as shown in the scriptures provided in the OP.

As shown above brother, ALL the scriptures you have provided here are applicable ONLY to all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD in the "PRESENT TENSE" These scriptures are not applicable to someone that has FALLEN AWAY from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD.

Hope this helps..

LoveGodsWord said: Anything that is against Christ is antichrist. The Greek word used here is ἀντίχριστος antichristos which means against Christ of an opponent of the Messiah. If we no longer BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD then we are an "UNBELIEVER" and against Christ because we no longer BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD.
Your response...
All of this is quite beside the points I made. John was not referring to people who once believed but then no longer did. Nothing in what he wrote in the passage in question suggests he thought the anti-christs within the Church were once genuinely born-again believers. That he refers to them only as anti-christs indicates he believed they were always anti-christs. And he confirms this in his comments about their departure from the Church.
Not at all brother, it is very relavant to the point. As to be ANTICHRIST means to be against CHRIST or an OPPONANT to Christ. That is an "UNBELIEVER" in CHRIST. You only part quoted this post and did not address it. The post you are quoting from goes on to say..

As shown in the scriptures [19], They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

What did they go out from? They went out from the truth. The problem was not that they went out from fellowship with the BELIEVERS. The problem was that they became "UNBELIEVERS"

The CONTEXT is that there is many antichrists and false teachers (ἀντίχριστος; antichristos; those who are against Christ and apponant of the Messiah)

They went out from the truth of God's Word and no longer believed and followed Gods' Word which made them not of us (UNBELIEVERS). If they contunued with us then then would be of us (be continuing to believe and follow the truth of God's Word) and would have been of us. No longer believing God's Word they went out from us. If you no longer believe and follow the truth of God's Word to the end then you are no longer of us.

Let's now link these scriptures back to the previous post in JOHN 8:31-36. Do you remember the conditions that JESUS states for those who are His DISCIPLES and as PAUL says CONTINUED WITH US?

JOHN 8:31-36
[31], Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, IF YOU CONTINUE IN MY WORD , THEN ARE YOU MY DISCIPLES INDEED;

They went out from us because they were not of us. They went out from us (disciples) because they did not CONTINUE BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD. As a result of no longer BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD they left the truth.
LoveGodsWord said: What did they go out from? They went out from the truth.
Your response...
As I already pointed out, this isn't what John says. See my last post. They went out from "us," that is, the fellowship of genuine believers, the Church, not from the truth.
No you didn't. You said this but as shown above that is not what the scriptures say. The scriptures say that they went out from us because they were not of us. They went out from us (disciples) because they did not CONTINUE BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD. As a result of no longer BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD they left the truth.
LoveGodsWord said: The problem was not that they went out from fellowship with the BELIEVERS. The problem was that they became "UNBELIEVERS"
Your response...
??? But John explicitly identifies that their going out was from "us." He was focused on the departure of the anti-christs from the Church, not the truth. And John never indicated that they were anything other than false converts. He offers nothing in the passage that would suggest he thought he was speaking of genuine believers who had left the faith.
The "US" being referred to here in v19 was in reference to "BELIEVERS" They were a part of the "BELIEVERS" of God's WORD. This is what they went out from. If they CONTINUED with "US" or "BEEN OF US" (BELIEVERS and FOLLOWERS of God's WORD) then they would have CONTINUED WITH US (BELIEVERS AND FOLLOWERS; DISCIPLES). Links to what JESUS says in JOHN 8:31, IF YOU CONTINUE IN MY WORD THEN ARE YOU MY DISCIPLES INDEED and you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. JOHN never says that they were not PAST BELIEVERS. HE states they were but did went out from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD.
LoveGodsWord said: It depends on what you mean by chosen people.
Your response...
I mean it the way the Bible means it: a group of people specially chosen by God who lived under His theocratic rule, separated out from all other nations unto Him, bound to Him by covenant promise.
If you mean the way that the bible means it why did you leave out the scriptures posted that define who God's people are from the post you are responding to? As posted earlier God's people have always only ever been a remnant and always will be *ROMANS 9:27; ROMANS 11:1-5; REVELATION 12:17. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth *JOHN 4:23-24
LoveGodsWord said: These are those that we are discussing now and that is all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD are God's children.
Your response...
It may be who you're discussing but it wasn't who the OT people you cited were speaking of in the quotations from them that you gave. And I don't think all of God's children today are constituted only of those who believe and follow His word. Salvation is not a series of propositions or beliefs one accepts but a Person: Jesus Christ. (John 14:6; 1 John 5:11-13) Trusting in him, believing in him, is the way of salvation. He is salvation and being in him is the only way to become one of God's children.
You may need to be a little more clear in your response brother. I am not sure what your referring to. When you say "the old testament people you cited" I will assume you mean the scriptures quoted in the OP? God's people in the NEW and the OLD COVENANT have always been saved in the same way and that is by FAITH (HEBREWS 11). Only the process has changed type has been fulfilled in anti-type (CHRIST). The sin offerings of the OLD COVENANT are now fulfilled in Christ *JOHN 1:29; HEBREWS 10:1-12. "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes they world, even our faith. That is ONLY THOSE who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD have the VICTORY as told in the Words of JESUS; If you continue in my Word you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Whosoever commits SIN is the servant of sin. IF the Son shall make you free you shall be free indeed *JOHN 8:31-36.
LoveGodsWord said: Only those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD in the "present tense" are God's people.
Your response...
This sounds like works-salvation which the Bible flatly denies. (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 3:5) Following God's word, or obedience to His commands, is the result of salvation, not the means of it.
No it is not. JOHN 6:29 [29], Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent. Faith is God's WORK in us as he draws us through his Spirit *JOHN 16:8; REVELATION 3:20. We are saved by GRACE through FAITH and not of ourselves it is a GIFT of God and not of works lest any man should boast *EPHESIANS 2:8

JOHN 10:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. There is only life in the Word of God we only receive it by FAITH. It is God who works in us as we BELIEVE in His WORD and gives us POWER to FOLLOW it *ROMANS 1:16

LoveGodsWord said: Your forgetting those who rebelled against God in the wilderness who he cast off and destroyed from the very scriptures your quoting from *HEBREWS 3:9-19.
Your response...
No, I'm not forgetting. Those who died in the wilderness were still cared for by God while they were in the wilderness. He did not cast them off as you say but provided for and protected them though they never entered into the Promised Land.
Not those who rebelled against God who did not BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD. Those who did so were "UNBELIEVERS". Your ignoring HEBREWS 3:9-19. Those who God preserved are only ever those who BELIEVED GOD'S WORD REPENTED and FOLLOWED God. Those who did not were destroyed by God in the wilderness.

LoveGodsWord said: Also have a read of NUMBERS 11 through to 21 to which PAUL is referring.
Your response...
I have read through the story many times. You might want to read the rest of the Book of Numbers that details how God kept His Chosen People while they remained outside of the Promised Land.

How God kept his people does not contradict anything that has been shared with you so far. It comes down to the bibles definition of who God's people are. They are all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD. UNBELIEVERS were always cut off from being God's people as demonstrated through the scriptures shared with you.

Hope this helps.

Indeed God's Sheep do indeed follow Him except those that are lost. God's Sheep are all those who HEAR and BELIEVE and FOLLOW GOd's WORD ("present tense"). Those who are not God's SHEEP do not hear, FOLLOW and BELIEVE GOd's WORD. There is nothing in God's WORD to say that one always HEARS, BELIEVES and FOLLOWS God's WORD.
I never said there was. I said that Jesus’ sheep are always His sheep. And since His sheep hear and follow, they can never stop being His sheep.

LoveGodsWord said: This one is a pretty easy one to cover. You have actually missed out on a lot that is in these few scriptures which are in the first few verses.

HEBREWS 6:4-8
[4], For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
[5], And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

Who are we talking about here; BELIEVERS or UNBELIEVERS? The question your considering is; were these BELIEVERS and Born again christians. Lets look at the key points in these that describe who there people were from the scriptures...

1. They were once enlightened; v4
2. Having tasted of the Heavenly gift; v4
3. They were made partakers of the Holy Ghost; v4
4. Having tasted of the good Word of God; v5
5. Having tasted of the power of the world to come v5

So reviewing the CONTEXT of these scriptures we don't really need to say much they speak for themselves. These people were BELIEVERS that departed from GOD and became "UNBELIEVERS" returning back to a life of sin. These people are BELIEVERS as shown in the CONTEXT of v4-5 which continues...

[6], If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Yep, BELIEVERS having fallen away from the HEAVENLY gift back into sin..

[7], For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes oft on it, and brings forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God:
[8], But that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and is near to cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Yep thier end is to be burned does not sound like they will be going into God's Kingdom not having any REPENTANCE for sin (v6). These scripture are pretty rock solid I think and show that a BELIEVER can FALL AWAY back into SIN. Not sure why your having problems here brother to be honest.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts though.
Your response...
Well, for reasons I already laid out, I don't agree - reasons you have not defeated in any way in these comments of yours above. You're entitled to your own view of Scripture, of course, but simply describing and explaining your view doesn't automatically defeat every other possible view. If you want to show that your view is correct and mine is not, more than repeating your view is required. You must actually show why my view fails which you haven't come close to doing.
I added the compelete post above for your review. I see your having a few problems addressing these scriptures brother. I have only posted the above to show the CONTEXT that you left out of your interpretation of these scriptures. Perhaps you can pray and study them further. You do not need to respond if you do not wish to.
LoveGodsWord said:I added the whole section of 2 PETER 2:1-22 that you have part quoted to add the CONTEXT to what is being discussed by PETER. Let's have a look at some key points you have discarded in your reply post from the scriptures which disagree with your post in the scriptures your responding from...

1. CONTEXT is how God did not spare the angels that sinned or the world that sinned before the flood, or Sodom and Gommorah stating that these are all EXAMPLES of those who will live UNGODLY lives; v4-6.
2. The Lord knows how to deliver the Godly from temptation to sin; v9
3. The UNRIGHTEOUS will receive their reward for living ungodly lives v9-14
4. These people had FORSAKEN the right way and went astray; v15
5 Some will DECEIVE those who know truth through the lust of the flesh to follow their ways; v 18-19.

Ok so the above is the main CONTEXT you have left out of your discussion that shows that there will be those who have FORSAKEN the truth that went astray (v15) to follow the flesh, Some of these will seek to lure those who were clean escaped from them who live in error (BELIEVERS) v18-19. Key point here is that this class had FORSAKEN they truth and are now triyng to lure those who are not following them to follow the ways of the flesh.

The rest really does not need any commentary as the context here is to those who once had the truth but choose to FORSAKE the truth...

[20], FOR IF THEY HAVE ESCAPED THE POLLUTIONS OF THE WORLD THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, THEY ARE AGAIN ENTANGLED THEREIN AND OVERCOME, THE LATTER END IS WORSE THEN THE BEGGINING.
[21], FOR IT HAD BEEN BETTER FOR THEN NOT TO HAVE KNOWN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, THAN, AFTER THEY HAVE KNOWN IT, TO TURN FROM THE HOLY COMMANDMENT DELIEVERED UNTO THEM.
[22], But it is happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

According to the scriptures above brother PETER is talking about those who BELIEVED God's WORD as they ESCAPED the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the LORD JESUS CHRIST v20. We can then see in v21 That they had known the way of RIGHTEOUSNESS, they ESCAPED the POLLUTIONS of the WORLD...v 20-21. THEY KNEW the way of RIGHTEOUSNESS then TURNED AWAY from it v22. Pretty clear what the scriptures are talking about here brother. No need to comment further.
Your response...
1The context of Peter's words at the end of chapter 2 extends to the very first verses in the chapter which identify false teachers within the Church.

2 Peter 2:1-2
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.

Peter described the judgment that would fall upon these false teachers, explaining that if God did not spare in His judgments already fallen upon wickedness (the angelic rebellion in heaven, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Great Flood) He will not spare in His judgment upon these false teachers, either. Contextually, then, Peter does not cease throughout the chapter to have these false teachers in view.

2 Peter 2:9-14
9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,
10 and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries,
11 whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord.
12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption,
13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you,
14 having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.

Here Peter really goes after the false teachers, describing them in detail so that the believers to whom he wrote would not mistake them. Peter does not start his description above by saying that he was speaking of the saved who had become lost, however. No, he contrasts the godly with the "unjust" (or, the unrighteous), clearly distinguishing two types of people, not describing one person who was godly but is now unjust. And the unjust type of person he meant, in particular, was the false teacher he identified at the start of the chapter. Keeping, then, to the context supports my view quite well. Not so much your view, however...
I have added the complete post above that you are responding to as the CONTEXT does not agree with what you are stating. What you are ignoring in youre post is the CONTEXT provided in v4-19 that gives examples of the UNGODLY (those who do not BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD) being destroyed. The WARNING here is to BELIEVERS that some of these people KNEW God's WORD and had FORSAKEN God's WORD v15 and in v18-19 and would seek to LEAD AWAY BELIEVERS. Then we see in v20-22 the WARNING to BELIEVERS emphasized...

God's WORD speaks for itself.

Hope this is helpful.

If your once saved always saved then why not go out and live like the devil?
Paul gives that answer.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

LoveGodsWord said: Is that because you do not see the words "BORN AGAIN" written into the scriptures here? Who is the WARNING to from PAUL? It is to BELIEVERS or UNBELIEVERS? Of course PAULS WARNING is to BELIEVERS right? Is a BELIEVER (in the present tense) a BORN Again Christian or not?

The WARNING v28 take heed to yourselves and to all the flock (SHEEP) among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God" Yep seems like the warning is to BELIEVERS alright.

Now notice the picture PAUL is painting to God's SHEEP (BELIEVERS). He states v29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, TO DRAW AWAY DISCIPLES AFTER THEMSELVES. PAUL is painting the picture when he departs that there will be those arising seeking to destroy the FAITH of the BELIEVERS.

These scriptures tie in nicely with the ones we have already presented in 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-12 and MATTHEW 24:24. Sorry brother the point here in connection with 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-12; MATTHEW 24:24 and 2 PETER 2:1-22 is that these WARNINGS are to BELIEVERS. The WARNING is of a FALLING AWAY from the truth of God's WORD. Now if we cannot FALL AWAY from God's truth then why do we need to be WARNED and why does God's WORD give scriptures of those who FALL AWAY from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD?
Your response...
Not everything written to believers is about believers.
No one said that everything written to believers is about believers. So your point here is? I added the complete post above as I see you have not addressed it.
LoveGodsWord said: Now notice the picture PAUL is painting to God's SHEEP (BELIEVERS). Your response...
Acts 20:28-30 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

Paul did not say that from among the elders of the Church to which he was speaking that fellow believers or elders would rise up, speaking perverse things and drawing people after them. No, he uses the very generic word "men." Why is that? Well, I think it is because he was not regarding these "men" as of the faith but as false brethren, "wolves in sheeps' clothing." And they reveal the falseness of their faith by rising up and speaking perverse things. It doesn't sound to me, then, that Paul was saying anything in this passage that supports a saved-and-lost doctrine.
Your leaving out a key point here highlightedd in v29 which is "AFTER MY DEPARTING SHALL MEN RISE UP". The WARNING is to "BELIEVERS"; "GOD'S SHEEP" Those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW Gods WORD. Why give a warning to BELIEVERS if they cannot be drawn away from BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD? Your argument here brother does not follow the scriptures now does it?
LoveGodsWord said: These scriptures tie in nicely with the ones we have already presented in 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-12 and MATTHEW 24:24. Sorry brother the point here in connection with 2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-12; MATTHEW 24:24 and 2 PETER 2:1-22 is that these WARNINGS are to BELIEVERS.

So? Not all warnings to believer are necessarily about believers. You're guilty of non sequitur thinking here, it seems.
Who said all warnings are about believers? Some are some are not. You did not address the posts section you were responding to. I am only guilty of sharing God's WORD. It seems you do not believe it.
LoveGodsWord said: As shown above it looks like you have fallen prey to eisegesis or the misapplication of Scripture. Sorry brother God's WORD disagree with you. Only sent in love and as a help to you.
Your response..
Uh, yeah...Well, you haven't shown any eisegesis on my part nor have you established that I have misapplied Scripture. I have, though, shown both things in your posts. Oh, and it isn't that God's word disagrees with me but that your interpretation of His word disagrees with my own.
I disagree. You have been provided God's WORD and have been given the CONTEXT and further scriptures to show eisegesis on your part. God's WORD is not my words. In response you provide your own words. They are not Gods' WORD. Only God's WORD is true and we should believe and follow it *ROMANS 3:4.
False doctrines, however well-intentioned, are still false doctrines.
Something we both agree on. Thanks for sharing :)

I believe that true salvation is eternally secure and that no one knows the true heart of a man but God. Only God knows for certain regarding an individual. If true salvation were not eternally secure, then what would be the point of all that Jesus accomplished on the cross? He did not die brutally in vain. Personally, I can share here that God has literally (well, almost literally) reached down and shaken me or smacked me awake because I was heading down a dark road or a wrong path. God's Word says that He chastises those whom He loves. Well, I am living proof and I thank Him because God has saved me from myself numerous times. I can honestly say that God has made some things very plain or clear for me. I was like the child who touches the hot iron because someone said "Do not touch." I've experienced miracles and had encounters with real demons...yes, real demons. Anyhow, I think God chases after those who belong to him. It's the shepherd and His sheep. I am sure that if anyone truly and willfully insists on leaving the flock, they can but God loves his children.
My answer is not sophisticated or full of scripture references but I think it makes sense, even when compared to the general context of scripture references on this subject.
Thanks all for reading.

Are we literally sheep in your view. Or was this a parable about Gods children and the children of the devil? How do we know if we are Gods Children or the children of the devil *1 JOHN 2:1-4; 1 JOHN 3:3-10?

Hi JACK nice to meet you and thanks for sharing. Depends if you BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD. According to the scriptures. Those who DO not BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD and FALL AWAY and do not endure temptation to the end are not God's children. Thanks for sharing your view sister.

Who says God's Sheep are always His Sheep? God's Sheep according to the scriptures are only those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW Him.

[27], My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

If we do not BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD (present tense) we are not His Sheep. THat is why the scriptures teach we must endure temptation to the end BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD to receive eternal life *MATTHEW 10:22; JAMES 1:12

Paul gives that answer.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
— Romans 6:1-2
True. But did not Paul also say that he struggled with sin in a very real sense? The verses are well known. Romans 7:18-20 …18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do. 20And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.…
So while Paul is NOT saying that we should all just go out and willfully sin, he is saying that it can be a real struggle even for a believer. Anyone who says that he is 100% sinless from the moment that he/she is born again is full of beans. Christ died a brutal death on the cross for our salvation...not just from original sin inherited from Adam but our sin here and now in this life...the one in which we struggle.
It's a matter of heart... God knows the heart of a sincere follower of Christ. No one in this life can judge the innermost heart of a man.

True but if you have a change of heart and are born again to love. How does this change your thinking? *JOHN 14:15.
Next time you go to church, quote the following verses to people:
"For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith" (Galatians 3:10-11).
Then tell them that you are going to trust in Christ alone for your salvation, and following any laws that the church requires will be just voluntary for you and choosing not to follow them will make no difference to your standing with Christ.

See how far you will get.

Well, what do you mean by "endure temptation?" I've been tempted and I have even been backslidden and gave in to temptation like a wayward child but God came after me and knocked me on my posterior region and shook me awake and hard. He corrected me. He reached for me and let me know in no uncertain terms. I believe God's Word. Oh yes. The road might be bumpy for some and I don't think it's simple. I am thankful that God is far more merciful than most people. God eventually corrects those whom He loves. You are not cast away or thrown out like trash the moment you err.

Hi Maria nice to see you and thanks for sharing your thoughts. How does REPENTANCE cause us to fall away from salvation when REPENTANCE, CONFESSION and FAITH is the very condition of salvation *ACTS 2:38; ACTS 3:19; ACTS 8:22; ACTS 17:30; PROVERBS 28:13?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Maria,

God bless
To clarify, not to repent from sin will cause a person to fall away from God. They are on the wide road of destruction rather than the narrow one where Christ dwells in His Kingdom. Hope this clears it up.

That height nor depth passage comes to mind. :D
