I'm only beginning to learn about this - but have known about it for a while. I'll just begin by sharing an article, because I may completely misrepresent it if I try to put it into my own words:

Quoting from linked article (written by an author that's not so keen on the whole idea): Each of us has one of nine, fixed personality types (ennea being the Greek word for “nine”). Cron and Stabile label the nine types: (1) the perfectionist, (2) the helper, (3) the performer, (4) the romantic, (5) the investigator, (6) the loyalist, (7) the enthusiast, (8) the challenger, and (9) the peacemaker. Each personality type, in turn, belongs to a particular triad (related to your head, heart, or gut), has wing numbers (leaning into other types), stress numbers (the bad qualities you pick up when you’re unhealthy), and security numbers (the good qualities you pick up when you’re healthy). The bulk of the book moves through each type (not in order), explaining what these people are like, what famous people are like them, what they need to confront in themselves, and how each of us needs the grace of God to learn to be okay with our true self. ~ Enneagram: The Road Back to You, Or to Somewhere Else?

1 THE REFORMER
The Rational, Idealistic Type: Principled, Purposeful, Self-Controlled, and Perfectionistic

2 THE HELPER

The Caring, Interpersonal Type: Demonstrative, Generous, People-Pleasing, and Possessive

3 THE ACHIEVER
The Success-Oriented, Pragmatic Type: Adaptive, Excelling, Driven, and Image-Conscious

4 THE INDIVIDUALIST
The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type: Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental

5 THE INVESTIGATOR
The Intense, Cerebral Type: Perceptive, Innovative, Secretive, and Isolated

6 THE LOYALIST
The Committed, Security-Oriented Type: Engaging, Responsible, Anxious, and Suspicious

7 THE ENTHUSIAST
The Busy, Fun-Loving Type: Spontaneous, Versatile, Distractible, and Scattered

8 THE CHALLENGER
The Powerful, Dominating Type: Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and Confrontational

9 THE PEACEMAKER
The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type: Receptive, Reassuring, Agreeable, and Complacent

Rachel Hollis and her husband (Dave) recorded this podcast about Conflict Resolution + Personality Types and how knowing both can really change your relationship (I couldn't find the transcript :( - only the link to the podcast). What I like about this is that it isn't about formulas - it's about *knowing* ourselves and knowing others (and giving grace to others/but reaching towards health in ourselves).

I remember reading the enneagram stuff in my late 20s when I had a girlfriend who was very into learning about temperaments. She also showed me the excellent book on the Jungian Myers-Briggs temperament types "Please Understand Me". Having read in both systems we found that the Myers-Briggs Jungian temperaments were more insightful, or more complete, and especially with the very good summaries in the "Please Understand Me" book. That book has a simple 20 question test that is very well formed to give reliable results (I took it a few times over months and even years), and I found my results varied little. But the great value of that book is in the more detailed descriptions for each temperament, where you will recognize yourself and others in much more insightful ways. :)

I have issues with this because I see little fruit in the analysis of the unredeemed nature.

Our aim should be to be coming into the fullness of Christ.

What am I missing?

Blessings,

Carl Emerson.
That's actually what I appreciate the most about this - as it DOES focus on how we can learn to lean towards health (redemption/restoration).

This site gave an example of an enneagram #7 (the enthusiast) and the levels of states of health for them:

Healthy: Assimilate experiences in depth, making them deeply grateful and appreciative for what they have. Become awed by the simple wonders of life: joyous and ecstatic. Intimations of spiritual reality, of the boundless goodness of life.

Average: As restlessness increases, want to have more options and choices available to them. Become adventurous and ‘worldly wise,’ but less focused, constantly seeking new things and experiences: the sophisticate, connoisseur, and consumer. Money, variety, keeping up with the latest trends important.

Unhealthy: Desperate to quell their anxieties, can be impulsive and infantile. Do not know when to stop. Addictions and excess take their toll: debauched, depraved, dissipated escapists, offensive and abusive. ~ http://www.artofwellbeing.com/2017/11/01/enneagramofpersonality/

Somewhat like learning another language, so as to be able to understand more people.

It can help you better understand your brothers and sisters in your family and in your church, and better avoid conflicts based on misunderstanding. Also to better talk with them.

It's for the service of your own effort to obey John 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another.

Matthew 5:46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same?
Matthew 5:47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
For me it has SELF all over it.. has a history also.

It's about relationships. We can't really chip off our rough edges without being self-aware. Paying attention to our selves (on its own) doesn't make us selfish.

never done the enneagram but did the Myers-Briggs
(started a thread on it in this section with few replies)

to me it's funny to read description of my personality type to husband/child and they're "yes, that's you"

have a less common personality so some don't get me
thankfully, husband and child get me or is it tolerate me, lol

Yes but to identify with any particular personality type we limit the ability of God to use us in other ways - Moses was a classic case...

Is this not so ???

Blessings,

Carl Emerson.
But we DO all have our own personalities (and I believe that's God-given). I don't think He wants for us to all be the same. Recognizing our own personalities (and our strengths and natural weaknesses) - and what needs to go (ego) isn't limiting God, I don't think. For instance - I know that I will NEVER be a naturally organized person (so I can give myself some grace) - but that doesn't mean that I don't even TRY (for the sake of my husband).

Here's an example of how the Enneagram can help us in our process of maturing in Christ.

I love stuff like this, but being the groups resident new age woo-woo person, who is surprised?

I’m a type 7 with a dominant 6 wing and the sexual variant. I find that to be pretty reflective of my innate behaviors... And that’s what these things are. They’re a way to self-examine what we are inclined to do or be without effort. Like, mine says that I’m prone to being self-centered, not introspective, easily distracted, and I don’t face my negative feelings. On the whole, if left to my baser instincts, that’s quite true. Because I know this about myself, I work very hard to make sure I take time to be introspective and set goals, and work very hard to be conscientious of others.

Hey TW - that's a great mixture. From what I understand so far - that seems like a really good balance of spontaneity and stability.
and the sexual variant
.....are we still talking about the enneagram? :) I'm not familiar with that part of it (but I still have a LOT to learn).

This was an interesting podcast done by Ian Cron (Typology). He met with Jeremy Roloff and his wife, Audrey. Audrey is the 8 (the Challenger) and Jeremy is a 9 (the Peacemaker). The three of them do a great job of explaining how the enneagram can help couples (or any relationship, really) to understand each other and to strive for health. It's also interesting to me to see that they (Audrey and Jeremy) seem to be holding on to the idea that Jeremy NEEDS to be the "leader" (I realize we have to be pretty careful about that topic) but there seems to me to be some internal struggle there with what they've actually lived out and what they will hold on to as truth about marriage (and what they'll toss in the waste bin).

Transforming Relationships with the Enneagram, feat. Jeremy and Audrey Roloff (Enneagram 9 and 8) [S02-039]

Thanks! I was born that way.

.....are we still talking about the enneagram? :) I'm not familiar with that part of it (but I still have a LOT to learn).

It is what came up on my test. Apparently:

“People of the sexual variant are very much interested in one to one contacts. They are looking for intimacy and this may show in sexuality, though not necessarily. Being in a relationship is very important to them. They are the most passionate of the subtypes, being temperamental and having more energy. They have less of a problem with getting into a fight and care less about rules and responsibility.”

It also means I’m in tune with my Sacral Chakra. Probably from all the sex.

This was another great podcast. While the speaker/author is a 4, herself, they spoke about ALL the different types and how their tendencies affect their decision-making:

Link - The Enneagram and The Next Right Thing, feat. Emily P. Freeman (Enneagram 4) [S02-036]

Description: How does your Enneagram type affect your decision making? Each Enneagram type has different motivations and makes decisions in different ways. So, when faced with making a decision, sometimes we need to go against the grain of how we normally do things in order to figure out what is the next right thing.

In today’s episode, author Emily P. Freeman joins Ian to offer recommendations on decision making based on each Enneagram Type and the Centers of Intelligence.

Behavioral sciences, for starters.

I'm a 1, though I'm more familiar with Myers-Briggs. Haven't bothered studying much about Enneagram typing. Might check that podcast out a bit later. Sounds kind of interesting.

Well part of my university study was Psychology and as a secular 'science' it has little or nothing to add to what we understand in scripture when it comes to the redemption of our natures.

I was once a guest lecturer at a Masters class in psychology and they were unaware of what repentance and renounciation was, yet this is fundamental to spiritual release and sanctification.
