I didn't say they could.

But it sounds like that was what you were saying before.

I said,

"Do you believe that Harry Potter characters are operating by the power of the devil, or by the power of God?"

You said,

"Neither as far as I can tell."

So this means that you believe:

(a) There is a power that is neutral like the "Force" in Star Wars in our real world (Which is unbiblical).
(b) The author has the ability to change reality of real world sin and that nobody can be influenced to do these real world sins by his influence.
(c) Another explanation (Please explain).

Side Note:

Please keep in mind that you did say, "Rowling tries to portray Harry's magic as good." This suggests that the author has some kind of pull or influence on reality itself. Meaning, they can change the reality of the sin of witchcraft as being okay because they are writing about in some fictional universe where that is okay. But again, the reality of the sin cannot be changed by the author, and the real sin can influence young minds to dabble or get involved in the occult or witchcraft.

Well, I already answered that I don't believe (a) or (b), so that would leave (c) except that I've already tried to explain. Each time I try you accuse me of some sort of disingenuous intent. Not real motivating.

First, I offered you three explanations of what you could believe. The third option is an unknown to me. Do you mind requoting yourself or reposting what the third unknown explanation is that could convince me?

Second, it was never my intention to make this personally about you ever. I am merely set out to attack the wrong belief and not you personally; So please do not make it personal, my friend. I am only interested here in discussing the truth in light of God's Word to expose false thinking or false beliefs in general and not to make this about any one person.

I don't expect it to convince you. I referred to the use of the term "magic" in a context of mechanistic phenomena with unknown causes.

There is no such thing in light of the truth of God's Word. There is only two types of miraculous powers being worked through out history and today, and that is:

(a) The power of God.
(b) The power of the enemy or the devil.

If there is this power by unknown causes, where does the Bible teach this?
All who worked outside the power of God in Scripture were considered as sorcerers or witches in the Bible. Show me one example of a neutral supernatural power that is not of God in the Bible?

Also, the Harry Potter characters actually refer to themselves as wizards and witches and they cast spells and mention the word "magic", etc.; These are not the kind of characters that are operating soley based on technology or something. Even if that was the case, they are still called witches, and they cast spells, etc. This promotes the sin of witchcraft to people and they can be influenced to partake in the real thing themselves by putting such junk in their heads.

You said before you don't believe in anything like the "Force" from Star Wars. If this is so, then how do you explain the unusual phenomna of the characters in the Harry Potter universe? Also, how do you distance yourself from them calling themselves witches, wizards, and their casting of spells and their saying that they are operating by magic?

You're using all kinds of terms not associated with what I said. As such, they do not represent my position. You've not yet shown an interest in understanding me, or you would ask clarifying questions rather than pronouncements of my error.

Satan is not the evil equivalent of God. He is a creation of God. Therefore, in terms of ultimate causes (or first, primary, distant, whatever term you prefer) there is only one cause, and that is God. In the Bible that is expressed in places like Exodus 3:14. The Bible then expresses agency in places like Genesis 1:26.

A LETTER FROM AN EX-WITCH
WRITING ABOUT HARRY POTTER:

I am writing this urgent message because I was once a witch. I lived by the stars as an astrologer and numerologist casting horoscopes and spells. I lived in the mysterious and shadowy realm of the occult. By means of spells and magic, I was able to invoke the powers of the "controlling unknown" and fly upon the night winds transcending the astral plane. Halloween was my favorite time of the year and I was intrigued and absorbed in the realm of Wiccan witchcraft. All of this was happening in the decade of the 1960's when witchcraft was just starting to come out of the broom closet.

It was during that decade of the 1960's, in the year 1966, that a woman named J.K. Rowling was born. This is the woman who has captivated the world in this year of 2000 with four books known as the "Harry Potter Series." These books are orientational and instructional manuals of witchcraft woven into the format of entertainment. These four books by J.K. Rowling teach witchcraft! I know this because I was once very much a part of that world. Witchcraft was very different in the 1960's. There were a lot fewer witches, and the craft was far more secretive. At the end of that spiritually troubled decade, I was miraculously saved by the power of Jesus Christ and His saving blood. I was also delivered from every evil spirit that lived in me and was set free. However, as I began to attend fundamental Christian churches, I realized that even there witchcraft had left its mark. Pagan holidays and sabats were celebrated as "Christian holidays."

As time went on, I watched the so-called "Christian" churches compromising and unifying. I also watched with amazement as teachings from Eastern religions and "New Age" doctrine began to captivate congregations. It was a satanic set-up, and I saw it coming. Illuministic conspirators were bringing forth a one-world religion with a cleverly concealed element of occultism interwoven in its teachings. In order to succeed in bringing witchcraft to the world and thus complete satanic control, an entire generation would have to be induced and taught to think like witches, talk like witches, dress like witches, and act like witches. The occult songs of the 1960's launched the Luciferian project of capturing the minds of an entire generation. In the song "Sound Of Silence" by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, we were told of seeds that were left while an entire generation was sleeping, and that the "vision that was planted in my brain still remains."

Now it is the year 2000. All of the foundations for occultism and witchcraft are in place. The Illuminists have to move quickly, because time is running out. It was the Communist revolutionary Lenin who said, "Give me one generation of youth, and I will transform the entire world." Now an entire generation of youth has been given to a woman named J.K. Rowling and her four books on witchcraft, known as the Harry Potter Series.

As a former witch, I can speak with authority when I say that I have examined the works of Rowling and that the Harry Potter books are training manuals for the occult. Untold millions of young people are being taught to think, speak, dress and act like witches by filling their heads with the contents of these books. Children are obsessed with the Harry Potter books that they have left television and video games to read these witchcraft manuals.

The first book of the series, entitled "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", finds the orphan, Harry Potter, embarking into a new realm when he is taken to "Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." At this occult school, Harry Potter learns how to obtain and use witchcraft equipment. Harry also learns a new vocabulary, including words such as "Azkaban", "Circe", "Draco", "Erised", "Hermes", and "Slytherin"; all of which are names of real devils or demons. These are not characters of fiction! How serious is this? By reading these materials, many millions of young people are learning how to work with demon spirits. They are getting to know them by name. Vast numbers of children professing to be Christians are also filling their hearts and minds, while willingly ignorant parents look the other way.

The titles of the books should be warning enough to make us realize how satanic and anti-christ these books are. The afore mentioned title of the first book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", was a real give away.

The second book was called "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", while the third book was entitled "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." Nothing could be more obvious than that Harry Potter books are pure witchcraft and of the devil.

This is the oldest con game ever hatched out of hell. As a real witch, I learned about the two sides of "the force." When real witches have sabats and esbats and meet as a coven, they greet each other by saying "Blessed be", and when they part, they say "The Force be with you." Both sides of this "Force" are Satan. It is not a good side of the force that overcomes the bad side of the force, but rather it's the blood of Jesus Christ that destroys both supposed sides of the satanic "Force."

High level witches believe that there are seven satanic princes and that the seventh, which is assigned to Christians, has no name. In coven meetings, he is called "the nameless one." In the Harry Potter books, there is a character called "Voldemort." The pronunciation guide says of this being "He who must not be named." On July 8 at midnight, bookstores everywhere were stormed by millions of children to obtain the latest and fourth book of the series known as "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." These books were taken into homes everywhere with a real evil spirit following each copy to curse those homes. July 8th was also the 18th day (three sixes in numerology 666) from the witches' sabat of midsummer. July 8th was also the 13th day from the signing of the United Religions Charter in San Francisco. Now we have learned that the public school system is planning to use the magic of Harry Potter in the classrooms making the public schools centers of witchcraft training.

What does God have to say about such books as the Harry Potter series? In the Bible in the book of Acts, we read the following in the 19th chapter, verses 18 - 20: "And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the Word of God and prevailed."

Harry Potter: ‘Making Evil Look Innocent'

Issue Date: November/December 2001

What are kids saying about Harry Potter?

Here are some samples:

"I want to go to wizard school and learn magic. I'd like to learn to use a wand to cast spells." Dylan, age 10.

"If I could go to wizard school, I might be able to do spells and potions and fly a broomstick." Mara, age 12.

"It would be great to be a wizard because you could control situations and things like teachers." Jeffrey, age 11.

"I'd like to go to wizard school and learn magic and put spells on people. I'd make up an ugly spell and then it's pay-back time." Catherine, age 9.

"I feel like I'm inside Harry's world. If I went to wizard school I'd study everything: spells, counterspells, and defense against the dark arts." Carolyn, age 10.

"I liked it when the bad guys killed the unicorn and Voldemort drank its blood." Julie, age 13.

"The books are very clever. I couldn't put them down. When I was scared I made myself believe that it was supposed to be funny so I wasn't so scared." Nuray age 11.

These are the comments of young readers of the Harry Potter wizard books quoted on a new video by Jeremiah Films. On the video, called Harry Potter: Witchcraft Repackaged, Making Evil Look Innocent, author Robert S. McGee explains: "Children as young as kindergarten are being introduced to human sacrifice, the sucking of blood from dead animals, and possession by spirit beings."

Courts have banned the teaching of Christianity in public schools but Wicca, which is recognized by the U.S. courts as a religion and given tax-exempt status by the IRS, is taught freely. Harry Potter has become the method of introduction of Wicca to the very young.

Harry Potter materials have become much more than a hand full of children's fantasy books. Warner Brothers, Coca Cola, Minutemaid, and Mattel have used the Potter materials to launch games, puzzles, toys, backpacks, and every possible merchandizing product.

Scholastic, Inc., a major supplier of public school teaching aids has added the Potter literature to its line of curriculum materials. When the name "Harry Potter" is keyed into the Scholastic.com web site search engine, it returns 268 matches. "Jesus" returned only 23.

And now, a major movie is about to break on the scene called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Millions of dollars are being spent on pre-release hype.

Once introduced to the world of wizards, spells, and dark arts, readers of Harry Potter can advance their knowledge and skills in witchcraft and paganism by visiting the hundreds of web sites available on the internet.

Or, they can purchase more books on the subject from the well stocked Wiccan sections in local book super stores. Or, they can find over a thousand volumes on witchcraft available at Amazon.com.

Harry Potter books have taken the world of children's fantasy literature by storm. Over 200 million have been sold in 40 languages. One study shows that over half of the children in the western world have read at least one of the Potter books. Many reported rereading each book several times.

But is it just fantasy literature like Snow White and Cinderella? In the Harry Potter video, cult expert Caryl Matrisciana points out that in the older stories, evil never prevails.

There are no absolutes in his world. What is right depends on the situation.

Witchcraft now has a complete package. Starting in kindergarten with Harry Potter and TV witch shows, children are led on to the horror movies and hundreds of Wicca and pagan web sites. When they thirst for more power, high school and college Wicca covens are available. In the adult world, corporations are hiring New Age practitioners to provide seminars in sensitivity training, stress relief, and self improvement for employees.

Former Satanist William Schnoebelen points out in his book, Wicca, Satan's Little White Lie, that, "I finally learned in the most graphic fashion imaginable that the difference between witchcraft or Wicca and Satanism is actually non-existent."

Before he was saved he found himself cruising the streets looking for a lone female to assault, not for sex, but to drink her blood.

The bottom line is a hunger for power. Harry Potter and the rest of witchcraft promises that power. But in the end they discover that Satan is really in charge of the power and only uses it like cheese in a mouse trap.

Harry Potter provides a basic initiation into witchcraft for a whole new generation. Imagine what the world will be like when they grow up.

Harry Potter: Witchcraft Repackaged Making Evil Look Innocent

Millions of American schoolchildren have a new subject in school: witchcraft!
Through the Harry Potter series, the ancient occult religion of Wicca is being introduced in almost every public school in America. This video explains how Scholastic Inc., the largest publisher of children's books in the world, is supplying Harry Potter materials to millions of schoolchildren. Scholastic Inc. is using its unrivaled position in the educational system to flood classrooms and libraries with witchcraft, repackaged as "children's fantasy literature." Teachers are encouraged to read the Harry Potter books aloud in class, and millions of children are being densensitized to the dangers of the occult spirit world.

Through Harry's world of sorcery they are learning what tools today's witches and pagans use -- supernatural imagination, spiritual concentration, wands, brooms, spells and curses. Warner Brothers new film based on Harry Potter has been called an accurate portrayal of witchcraft. And indeed it is.

In this video, you will see how completely occult is the world of Harry Potter. After reading the Harry Potter books, millions of children will demand to see Warner Bros. new movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

Christian parents have faced a similar problem for years with the teaching of evolution in their public schools. They have responded by teaching their children that they cannot believe everything they are taught in school. Now, with the Harry Potter books on witchcraft becoming part of public school curriculum, parents need to know enough about it to also teach their children that the spell-casting and other activities of Harry Potter are also forbidden territory. This video will help.

Harry's books are about a young 11-year-old generational wizard, Harry Potter, who attends the prestigious 1000-year-old occult boarding school, Hogwart's School of witchcraft and Wizardry. All his teachers are practicing occultists, and tutor their students in the dark arts of sorcery and divination: fortune telling, astrology, potion mixing, spell weaving and curse casting. Harry's world says that drinking dead animal blood gives power, a satanic human sacrifice and Harry's powerful blood brings new life, demon possession is not spiritually dangerous, and that passing through fire, contacting the dead, and conversing with ghosts, others in the spirit world, and more, is normal and acceptable.

For me.. it deals with things that God.. the one we SAY we love so much.. are wrong. Whats the thinking here? If I look at a REAL woman and lust about her its sin. But if I make up some woman thats not real and lust its ok?

Well I keep hearing "its not real" so its ok. Its something that God said is wrong. A lie is based off of some kind of truth. It deals with Satan that got 1/3 of heaven to fall with him. These books have nothing what so ever to do with God, Christ, Holy Spirit..have no life in them..and does not point to Christ in anyway.. and thats ok? Has everything to do with Satan ..you know those that fallen.. the ones we fight.. in heavenly places.

Adam and Eve gave away what GOD made for them. ALL based on one simple tiny lie. So does it deal in magic? Death? Murder? Give you more hunger for GOD and just and mercy and grace forgiveness? Trying to believe it has nothing to do with darkness demons fallen angels what ever. So what? That changes nothing. The more you DONT believe the enemy is that much happier.

See it opens a door one should have NEVER touched. What you WILL find is people with these books in some way have had problems ...that still never go away. See its not that GOD doesnt want US to have fun in ALL areas of our life. But some things dont lead to GOD. They take you AWAY from Him.. they bring more darkness and problems in your life. And sometimes.. these things NEVER touch you.. just the ones around you. A roaring lion.. seeking whom he may kill.

We can do anything we want.. Watch read hear speak.. somethings lead to life some dont. Christ would look at this and say.. what you already know. "has no life in it". Doesnt point to Him in anyway.. and were ok with that huh. Who wants to ALWAYS be thinking about Christ.. always reading that bible.. always praying always helping always looking for the good.. you know.. what is not of faith is a sin.

Know this.. He will never say a word.. we open and close those doors. No one ever got a peace from GOD to read these books. Don't get me wrong.. I LOVE this kind of stuff! Saw some of the movies.. repented well .. I love Jesus.. I dont need man to tell me this stuff is not of God.. I know already. One road leads to life..(not talking every lasting life) one road leads to destruction in this life. One road we give the enemy the right to come in and do what he wants. We NEVER have to speak think this. Adam and Eve never signed anything.. never ever agreed to anything. Same here.... just by reading something a GOD says is NOT of Him.. give the enemy the right.

I only speak because this was talked about here. Other then that I never say a word.. nor will the Father.. we are free.. some thing give us life.. others being death.. in some way or another.

Do you think it is possible to be at peace while reading and watching things like the Harry Potter series?

There has been a debate about this amongst Christians for a long time.

I really enjoy Harry Potter and I actually moderate on a virtual Harry Potter experience website. I love what I do and it is something I am passionate about.

I feel at peace with it, but maybe it is different for everyone?

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance!

If your calling relates to the content, then it won't bother you so much.

For example, if you talk to people, a lot of people who say like Harry Potter or other such things, it gives a real reason for a conversation and relationship.

Also, if your beyond sight calling is related to counter witchcraft endeavors, it's like research since this area relates to sins within the imagination.

Harry Potter makes no pretentions to mirror reality, so I don't see a problem with it. It just has this fictitious alternate reality existing alongside muggle-land.

Personally I'm more of a Narnia fan, though. I'm in a much smaller fan base (I think it's safe to say when you don't have amusement parks dedicated to Narnia, you have a smaller market). Narnia does take stabs at allegorizing reality, though, which is different. Fortunately, those come at a Christian angle, as opposed to promoting wicca, satanism, etc..

Ask God about it. Work out your OWN salvation with fear and trembling. Everyone has an opinion, go to Jesus directly and let him tell you :)

What's permissible for me might not be for you and vice versa.

Well, I think some people need to pray longer so as to seek the truth on this matter. For a quick prayer is not going to cut it. Especially if they end up thinking the Harry Potter movies are not something sinful.

I mean, if one really stops and thinks, it is kind of obvious that witchcraft is being promoted in these movies. Ex Satanists turned Christian testify to this. Children testified that they want to do real magic as a result of these movies. So the sin being promoted is very real and has already influenced children. Children. We do not have a liberty in Christ to fantasize about sinful things (Which has already led to children wanting to play around with witchcraft). Sin does not go away or change just because some writer says it does not exist in his universe or story. If a writer is promoting a real sin from our world, and they are getting people to read their stories that promotes such a sin as being okay, they are deceiving people to think it is okay to mentally think about a sin that God condemns.

For example: I want you to imagine the worse kind of sins that you can think of. Now, imagine a writer says that there is a universe where these sins are okay and or not a problem. Imagine tons of people today end up buying this book and they love it. They read this book on these particular sins being pushed upon them as being okay. These sins are okay to think about in a fantasy setting. But this does not work because in Matthew 5:28-30, Jesus said that even looking upon a woman in lust is the equivalent of adultery. He warned that even looking upon a woman in lust can cause one to be cast bodily into hell fire.

We are not talking about our liberty in Christ when it comes to drinking certain things, or worshiping on any day we desire or all days (Which is the context of Romans 14), we are talking about something sinful being pushed on the minds of children and men. A Christian should naturally feel repulsed by sinful things and they should not want to have anything to do with it. For what fellowship has light with darkness?

To all:

We live in a culture where you can just Google it, and you get the quick answer.
While God can answer us quickly if He desires, sometimes finding the truth is not always that easy.
Sometimes we have to keep knocking.
We have to receive His words and hide His commandments within our hearts.
We have to cry out for knowledge.
We have to seek God's words as if they precious treasure or riches.
By this then we will understand the fear of the Lord, and the knowledge of God.

For it is written:

1 "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God."
(Proverbs 2:1-5).

We cannot seek our own way or path.

God's ways are not our ways.
We have to hear God's Word and do what He desires for us to do.
The less of me and the more of Christ.
That is what this life is about.
Shining the light of Christ, and it is not about indulging in the sinful things that this world promotes.
For we are told to pick up our cross and deny ourselves and to follow Jesus.

The problem is that a writer cannot change the reality of sin. That is what the writer is suggesting. He is saying that in his universe, "Witchcraft or sorcery is okay"; But in God's Word, "it condemns it." No writer has the authority to say that these sins are not real. Ex Satanists turned Christian will testify that hard core witchcraft is being promoted in these films. We even see testimonies of children expressing the desire to want to partake in witchcraft as a result of these films. So yeah. It is not as innocent or as detached as you suggest. A real sin of our world is no longer a sin just because some writer says that this sin does exist as a real sin in his world. Writers do not have more authority than God on what the definition of sin is. Magic or sorcery is being promoted even in the Narnia films as being okay. But in the Bible, magic or sorcery is condemned. Sorcerers in the Old Testament were to be put to death. Granted, Christians do not put to death sorcerers, for we are under a New Covenant with New Commands, but the point here is that God hates sorcery and witchcraft. So if God hates it, we should hate any form of that kind of thing, too.

Side Note:

Oh, and it does not matter if the sorcery or witchcraft does not exactly resemble the kind in the Bible. It is still sorcery and witchcraft. In fact, the movies promote real satanic witchcraft practices. Kids have ALREADY been influenced to want to play around with witchcraft as a result of these movies. Therein lies the problem.

Really?

If you read the article from the testimony of an ex-Satanist turned Christian on the Harry Potter films, and the testimony of children saying that they want to indulge in magic (as a result of Harry Potter), then you really are choosing not to see the obvious problem with these films.
But I suppose one day you will see it.
For all things will be revealed indeed.

But it is my hope that you will see it here in this life.
For I care and love you in Jesus Christ.

Yeah. Really. Never once have I promoted Harry Potter. In fact, I've been quite critical of it. But because I won't condemn it for the same reasons you condemn it, you seem to think I like Harry Potter.

The course of this conversation is what is known as "fractally wrong". In other words, it has so many problems I don't even know where to start: confirmation bias, quote mining, conflation, red herrings ... and on and on.
