Playing U-tube roulette once more I came across one I had not heard before and I recall one other like it so I'm going to launch this with one of the more famous songs and those 2 obscure ones. Note that both teh obscure songs were from the Vietnam era but are about are about previous wars.

Getting to this recording which was the first that I heard I noticed many artists have recorded it. I wonder if it being so gruesome prevented it ever becoming popular. (or perhaps it was down under).

It is very well known in Australia, where I come from — every year we commemorate the disastrous campaign at Gallipoli, which was Australia's first entry into the war, on the anniversary, 25th April (Anzac Day, which is a public holiday), so And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda is often played at commemorations and on the radio that day. We used to sing it at school in the 1980s. The recording I've heard most often is by Eric Bogle, who wrote it — not many songs make me break down and cry, but that one always does. In fact, Eric Bogle wrote Green Fields of France (also called No Man's Land) as well.

For What It's Worth (Post#9) is the first song I learned to play on guitar. For what that's worth.

My son did a report on this song at his Christian school. Pretty much a song protesting the entire broken political system and how all of us are also responsible for enabling it. He got an A+.

"Need A Lot Of Love"

A soldier cut loose in Saigon
He used to be a farmer just like anyone
A soldier cut loose in Saigon
Even to his father he's a violent son

Someone built a wall in Berlin
Not to keep them out but to keep them in
Someone built a wall in Berlin
A permanent reminder of what's happening

We need a lot of love
Got to take a lot of pain
You can watch the river flood
But get washed away the same
Oh, we know that things don't last
So we use the guiding tracks
Through the deadly ring of flame

Smoking in a room in Lebanon
The hotel's serving but the hospital's gone
Choking in a room in Lebanon
Many people hurting, still the telephone's on

Standing on a street in Belfast
A city of division, widow in black
Standing on a street in Belfast
The crunching of the feet on the broken glass

We need a lot of love
Got to take a lot of pain
You can watch the river flood
But get washed away the same
Oh, we know that things don't last
So we use the guiding tracks
Through the deadly ring of flame

We need a lot of love
Can you feel the love?
Got to take a lot of pain
Lot of pain
You can watch the river flood
Sitting by the river
But get washed away the same
Washing over me
Oh, we know that things don't last
So we use the guiding tracks
Through the deadly ring of flame
