Prison population size doesn't have a direct correlation to crime rates.
You started this thread of conversation between us implying that crime was the reason for the larger prison population size in this country.
The answer is no, not really.
Yeah, but they average rather short sentences. Plus you aren't considering the fact that our violent crime rate is basically the highest in the developed world ...and that tends to carry long sentences.
It's not higher enough to justify imprisoning twice as many people as every other country in the developed world combined, we're just big on imprisonment, both for violent and non-violent crime.
We certainly don't have a crime problem twice as big as the rest of the developed world combined.
