You started this thread of conversation between us implying that crime was the reason for the larger prison population size in this country.

The answer is no, not really.

Yeah, but they average rather short sentences. Plus you aren't considering the fact that our violent crime rate is basically the highest in the developed world ...and that tends to carry long sentences.

It's not higher enough to justify imprisoning twice as many people as every other country in the developed world combined, we're just big on imprisonment, both for violent and non-violent crime.

We certainly don't have a crime problem twice as big as the rest of the developed world combined.

It is in our case....but that's not necessarily true for every nation.

Our chances of being shot and killed are about 25x higher than the rest of the developed world.

But we're getting off point. I get that you think we're over incarcerating.....but you don't seem to understand that we actually have more violent crime, more unreported violent crime, and more unsolved violent crime than all of our peers.

I don't know this since I haven't looked the guy up in detail yet and I'm just speculating, but I agree that it sounds overboard.

I do get that, but we don't have enough crime to justify the extra amount of imprisonment we favor.
