I'm not even close to being a Presbyterian but my three favorites are John Gresham Machen, Francis Schaeffer, and Robert Laird Harris. Not that I agreed with everything they ever said.

I liked the white stone church in Indian Valley (with the ramp).

Not Presbyterian, but Reformed; Paul Washer. I like his stuff.

Henry van Dyke Junior wrote a beautiful book called "The Other Wise Man". Awesome book.

I realized a lot of men I thought were Presbyterian were really Congregational, but that doesn't necessarily shorten my list too much. I'll pick three among my favorites, but not my three most favorite.

Long story - I used to be Presbyterian, but I'm now Catholic. I'm not going to get into an argument about why's and wherefore's, but in Australia we have a medical service called the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which services emergency call-outs in remote locations eg. outback cattle stations.

The prime mover in founding the Royal Flying Doctor Service was Rev. John Flynn, a Presbyterian pastor.

As a byline, when I was Presbyterian, I developed an enormous amount of respect for the pastor I had at the time, although he was originally Methodist.

While I'm on the topic of the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service as above), I've got a bit of an amusing story.

Some years ago now, my wife and I had a holiday at a "farm stay" just outside Charleville, which is about 750 kms (about 470 miles) more or less west of Brisbane. It's an all day drive easily.

We attended a local church when we were there and met a young married couple with a couple of very young children. He was a real estate valuer working for the state government if I remember rightly, and she was a trained nurse, albeit a stay at home mum at that time.

But he told us one day he came home from work after a boring day in the office and greeted his wife with the perfunctory - "Well, how'd yer day go?" She replied, "Oh, pretty good! I've just been to Brisbane and back!"

It turned out since she was a trained nurse, she was asked at short notice to accompany a medical flight with the RFDS to Brisbane for hospital treatment. Then they flew her home again.

So while hubby was sweating out a boring day in a government office, swatting flies and watching the clock turning around very slowly, the little lady was way up in the wide blue yonder winging her way to Brisbane and back! I guess her day was a lot better than his.

Knox was the man! I've listened to the bio by Lawson three or four times. He spent so much time in prayer that when he died his knees looked like camel knees!
