unauthorized immigrants

I prefer "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" as they have broken the laws of the USA by crossing the border without authorization thus become illegally here

Is There a Connection Between Undocumented Immigrants and Crime?

A lot of research has shown that there’s no causal connection between immigration and crime in the United States. But after one such study was reported on jointly by The Marshall Project and The Upshot last year, readers had one major complaint: Many argued it was unauthorized immigrants who increase crime, not immigrants over all.

(Read the rest at the link provided.)

The article makes reference to Texas, trying to say that illegal alien crime is no big deal. The following actual stats show that illegal alien crime makes a big difference, especially against those that the crimes are perpetrated against. 306,000 crimes in 8 years, that's over 38,000 crimes per year. It is a real problem that needs to be dealt with.

According to DHS status indicators, over 289,000 criminal aliens have been booked into local Texas jails between June 1, 2011 and April 30, 2019, of which over 196,000 were classified as illegal aliens by DHS.

Between June 1, 2011 and April 30, 2019, these 196,000 illegal aliens were charged with more than 306,000 criminal offenses which included arrests for 556 homicide charges; 33,816 assault charges; 5,888 burglary charges; 38,601 drug charges; 426 kidnapping charges; 16,387 theft charges; 24,402 obstructing police charges; 1,711 robbery charges; 3,611 sexual assault charges; 4,826 sexual offense charges; and 3,083 weapon charges. DPS criminal history records reflect those criminal charges have thus far resulted in over 124,000 convictions including 254 homicide convictions; 14,100 assault convictions; 3,258 burglary convictions; 18,445 drug convictions; 179 kidnapping convictions; 7,259 theft convictions; 11,602 obstructing police convictions; 1,037 robbery convictions; 1,783 sexual assault convictions; 2,406 sexual offense convictions; and 1,325 weapon convictions.

These figures only count individuals who previously had an encounter with DHS that resulted in their fingerprints being entered into the DHS IDENT database. Foreign nationals who enter the country illegally and avoid detection by DHS, but are later arrested by local or state law enforcement for a state offense will not have a DHS response in regard to their lawful status and do not appear in these counts.

Call them what you wish, the numbers still show what they show.

Texas actually keeps data on this (one of the few states that do it consistently). Here's what they found:

The data don't support your assumptions, do they?

The Texas research is consistent with the finding that crime along the Mexican border is much lower than in the rest of the country, homicide rates in Mexican states bordering the United States are not correlated with homicide rates here, El Paso’s border fence did not lower crime, Texas criminal conviction rates remain low (but not as low) when recidivism is factored in, and that police clearance rates are not lower in states with many illegal immigrants – which means that they don’t escape conviction by leaving the country after committing crimes.
Illegal Immigrants and Crime – Assessing the Evidence

Not that evidence or logic will have any effect on the people peddling the "illegal immigrants are criminals" story.

Unauthorized entry is a misdemeanor. Simply being here without authorization is a civil violation, not a crime.
Yet it’s a broken law and therefore illegal.

The maximum prison term is 6 months for the first offense with a misdemeanor and 2 years for any subsequent offense with a felony. In addition to the above criminal fines and penalties, civil fines may also be imposed.

And of course, those who came here illegally (unlike about half of them who came here legally and just overstayed) have broken a law. The point is that such people are otherwise much more law-abiding than native-born Americans. This is why crime is so much lower where there are many illegal aliens living.

I saw your charts. 899 too many crimes per 100,000. Should be zero.

What’s interesting these stats are based on who we kind of know are here illegally. It’s not like we have a census count of illegal immigrants.

No. It's sampling like anything else.

It is true, illegal immigrants could be even less likely to commit crimes than the data indicate. However, estimates for illegal aliens in the United States seem to have been rather accurate.

Using that approach, your solution would be to deport all native-born Americans, since that would reduce crime rates far more than deporting illegal aliens. I can see some problems with that.

However, this is why it's safer in communities with many illegal aliens.

Actually that isn't true. Saying that immigrants, whether legal or illegal, commit fewer crimes than native born Texans isn't the same as saying that it "is no big deal". Illegal immigrants, according to DHS data commit crimes at a rate of 50% lower than native born Texans while legal immigrants are 66% lower. Thus, data shows that immigrants lower the overall percentage of crime in the state of Texas even though more crimes are committed or another way to say it is that immigrants are more law abiding citizens than native born Texans.

And that is a very big deal. It's why neighborhoods with a lot of illegal aliens are safer than other neighborhoods.

Which only makes sense. Non-citizens, especially from repressive societies with rampant police corruption, are going to do their very best not to attract official attention.

The best way not to attraction is to not do illegal things.
