Agreed. It is a great book. It makes an impression how elder (Saint) Paisios does nothing without seeking the young man's permission first, in contrast to what he experienced under the gurus.

I really enjoyed that book too. It's been a while since I read it, so much of it (apart from the stuff the young man experienced with the gurus) has sort of just built itself into the general knowledge I've read. But I really enjoyed it.

I remember too how gentle St. Paisios was with him for quite some time, but eventually became more stern (and for the sake of the young man's soul!).

But there are certainly powers that exist apart from the Holy. It is good for everyone to accept this - I know some do not.

I was given this book by some people at my parish because I told them about all the weird spiritual things that I have experienced and they said the author's experiences were very similar to mine. I've experienced stuff that is so bizarre and ridiculous that it would sound like I'm making it up if I tried to explain it.

My priest recommended this for my son, and he in turn, had me read it. I really liked this book and the tale it tells. (Of course, the fact that it is about Saint Paisios, doesn’t detract from my interest at all!)

This was one of the first Orthodox books I ever read. I have fond memories of it and can only think about how gentle of a man St. Paisios was.

I read it a while ago. I enjoyed it though I felt the author revealed a little more than he should have. And the book is sometimes framed as contrasting Orthodox Christianity with "Eastern spirituality" but it should be made clear that the author interacts with a very particular set of people in India and the Babaji cult is not really representative of most expressions of Hinduism. And there is very little examination of the doctrinal content of that group to compare with Christianity- we are mainly presented with the extremely domineering, controlling person of the guru. Unfortunately such people can be found in Christianity as well.
