a cross hanging from your neck?

or use a fish saying i am evangelical

Yes! Not only that but I think the orientation to be against the use of symbols like that comes from a mind set that is very Gnostic in attitude. It literally resembles the ancient sect known as the Messalians or Eutychians

Is it something that will affect your walk with Christ if you do or don't? I think not. Christ, being God, judges the hearts of men, not the outward appearance as men do which is only temporary.

Well, I don't see that it of itself is going to make you the wrong way, and it can be a way of telling people you love them. Or, maybe I should say . . . if you have been good and kind with people so they know you love them, the cross can tell them this is because of Jesus.

Meanwhile, others might wear a cross and be cutting people off in traffic and screaming at people, and first cursing them instead of "first of all" (1 Timothy 2:1-4) loving and blessing them in prayer. And so if someone sees them with a cross around their necks > they can know to stand back far enough so the cross person can't strangle them with the chain which they use to hang their cross. And know the person is wearing it because he or she likes to decorate himself or herself.

Now, there is a technical thing you might consider > the cross is not really for us to hang, but the cross is for hanging us. Yes, first, we have needed for Jesus to hang on the cross, that we may be forgiven and reconciled with God. But each of us also needs how our old man is nailed to the cross. Plus, we need to feed on the example - - - to live how Jesus loved us, while on the cross >

"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

So, Jesus was sweet about it, sweet-smelling to God. And so, we likewise need to be sweetly and kindly and tenderly loving while we make sacrifices of loving. And it is not about, then, what we might claim to tell, by wearing a metal thing, but it is about how we smell to God.

And another item >

"Test all things; hold fast what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

So, God wants us to test every thing, for what He considers to be good. And test even problems, for how God is able to use them for His all-loving good. Because God is all-loving. Plus, God means for us to personally check with Him about what He wants, by seeing if and how He has us doing something in His peace.

Because God is not only distant and keeping a record on us; He does not want us to be concerned only about an item here or there, like if I should wear a cross or not, but our Heavenly Father desires to share in all we do, guiding us all the time in His peace > Colossians 3:15.
