QUOTE="His Disciple, post: 68813235, member: 381912"]I can easily defend the Wednesday crucifixion without reference to the strongest statement in all the Bible about the time Jesus would spend in the tomb......
..
I've already belabored the evidence, in this thread, of a Passover Sabbath not being on Saturday. Jesus was explicitly crucified before a "high sabbath", not a regular sabbath (Saturday). Jesus was explicitly crucified on the "day of preparation of the Passover [sabbath]", not the day of preparation for Saturday sabbath. The only way this makes any sense is if there was a Passover sabbath on a day other than Saturday......
...
..
While it's not explicit in the Bible, but is implied, it is explicit in the Talmud, Jews didn't believe that the spirit of the dead left until after three days. So, when Lazarus was dead four days, that length of time was used to challenge Jesus' decision to raise Lazarus. If Jesus were in the tomb less than three days, the Jews would have just insisted he didn't die in the first place......
..
.
Mark several times uses the phrase "after three days". I see no reason why a fictitious "ON the third day" (a phrase that isn't used in the Geek manuscripts, nor in our Creeds) should trump a real "after thee days."...
..
.
Now, what evidence do any of you really have for Friday, not counting tradition? None at all

Luke 13:15-17Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox or donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it to water? Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for eighteen years—shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage* on the Sabbath day?”
When he had said these things, all his adversaries were humiliated, but the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things he was doing.

*Footnotes: 13:16 Or isn’t it necessary that she be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day?

JESUS healed on any day as the FATHER directed.
JESUS healed everyone who came to HIM.
By HIS stripe, we are healed.

This thread has been dormant for over a year. Why the need to resurrect it?

Prodromos, do you recall the guy who was always resurrecting extremely dead discussions? I saw 2015 and instantly thought of him. BTW, have a blessed Great Friday.

This always bugged me so I did some research on it. I present this not to be putting forth new doctrine and not as any great spiritual revelation, but merely as an interesting side light to consider. Most Christians are unaware of these facts. However, if you can receive this knowledge, it might serve to open up new spiritual revelation and understanding

COOL.

Someone went looking for truth.

How novel an idea ?!

Every year around Resurrection Sunday, not that I have any qualms about the term Easter but many folks do, this argument raises its head.
The only Sabbath mentioned in the T'nakh, OT to us gentiles, is the weekly Sabbath. There was only one Sabbath in passion week, the weekly 7th day Sabbath. Anyone who would object please show me from the scripture where any day the feast of unleavened bread [ULB] was called a Sabbath?

Jewish Encyclopedia-DAY
In the Bible, the season of light (Gen. i. 5), lasting "from dawn [lit. "the rising of the morning"] to the coming forth of the stars" (Neh. iv. 15, 17). The term "day" is used also to denote a period of twenty-four hours (Ex. xxi. 21). In Jewish communal life part of a day is at times reckoned as one day; e.g., the day of the funeral, even when the latter takes place late in the afternoon, is counted as the first of the seven days of mourning; a short time in the morning of the seventh day is counted as the seventh day; circumcision takes place on the eighth day, even though of the first day only a few minutes remained after the birth of the child, these being counted as one day. Again, a man who hears of a vow made by his wife or his daughter, and desires to cancel the vow, must do so on the same day on which he hears of it, as otherwise the protest has no effect; even if the hearing takes place a little time before night, the annulment must be done within that little time. The day is reckoned from evening to evening—i.e., night and day—except in reference to sacrifices, where daytime and the night following constitute one day (Lev. vii. 15; see Calendar). "The day" denotes: (a) Day of the Lord; (b) the Day of Atonement; (c) the treatise of the Mishnah that contains the laws concerning the Day of Atonement (See Yoma and Sabbath).E. G. H
DAY - JewishEncyclopedia.com
The New testament tells us the day of the week that Jesus was crucified, παρασκευή/Parasceue which is the Greek name for the day we call Friday.
Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, [παρασκευή/Parasceue] that is, the day before the sabbath, [προσάββατον/prosabbaton]
Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, [παρασκευή/Parasceue] and the sabbath drew on.
John 19:14 And it was the preparation [παρασκευή/Parasceue] of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, [παρασκευή/Parasceue] that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Matthew 27:62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, [παρασκευή/Parasceue] the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

Ahhh yes, I quit CF for about a year due to LLOJ's tendency to resurrect threads. I got tired of starting to read a thread and then find out that it had been dead for 3 years.

The post 88, supported only by tradition, is long, and false.
Wrong! Just saying it is false does not make it so. I did not quote any tradition I quoted 5 verses of scripture, a definition of parasceue from BAG one of, if not, the most highly accredited lexicons available and the Jewish Encyclopedia for the Jewish definition of "day." So if you think it is false please provide some evidence.

Jesus Wasn’t Crucified On Good Friday
Correct!! it SHOULD be "Good Wednesday". Apparently the Catholic management shortened it for "convenience" (and to fit in "Ash Wednesday, and "Maundy Thursday").

Justin. [A.D. 110-165.] The First Apology Chap. LXVII
But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples, He taught them these things, which we have submitted to you also for your consideration.

This is in no way Traditional Theology.

QUOTE="stuh, post: 67263609, member: 375561"]You are exactly right GratiaCorpusChristie. The important thing is that Jesus died for us and is risen. Yes, the law is passed away and the commandment that Jesus gave was that we love one another. These are the things our Christianity is based upon, and the things that really matter.

As I said in the 2nd sentence, I merely posted this as an interesting side light, not as any great spiritual revelation. But to me it is interesting how Christians blindly accept teachings without ever questioning their veracity. As long as a priest or a minister says it, then it is automatically accepted as fact by many. I think

Jesus approves of our being like the Bereans and searching the scriptures to see whether or not these things are so. [/QUOTE

The law is passed away?

Yes, a long time ago.

Heb 8:13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Rom 7:1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Rom 7:2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
Rom 7:3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
Rom 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Rom 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
