Amazing isn’t it...?

Trump is the man who has gone from “I’d be happy to release my tax returns” to “I’d really like to release them, but I’m under audit”, to the man now taking legal action to prevent anyone from seeing them...!

What’s the fear Donnie...?

Thank you.

I don’t think the tax payer is consenting to such disclosure.
Is this satire? I'm having difficulty telling the difference. I have a hunch you'd understand my trouble here.

Either way, add this to your list of troubles understanding tax code. Try reading the whole paragraph again, slowly. Mind the commas.

Let's read this together:

Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives, the chairman of the Committee on Finance of the Senate, or the chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request,
Pretty plain speaking - no explanation needed:

except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
I don't think the taxpayer consents

So, your contention is that if Congress guarantees that they only hold “closed executive sessions” , then the President should allow that?

Now all partisan reporting aside - Here is the verbatim response:

Document: Treasury Secretary Denies Congressional Request for Trump Tax Returns

Quote:

lacks a legislative purpose for it -

I’m pretty sure that the “Separation-of-Powers Doctrine” (as well as that Constitution thing we’re always going on about), preclude the Executive Branch “setting the rules” for a co-equal branch of our government.

It’s not the President’s call and it certainly isn’t Mnuchin’s.

then they should win it in court easily.

Do you not get that our government has been forced to SUE ITSELF to get one branch to conform to a clearly written statute?

The “reasoning” for this “decision” [to not release the lawfully requested documents] hasn’t even been written yet!

You said that already, but as the quoted text shows, it is irrelevant.

"except that any dessert shall be furnished only when the vegetables have been consumed unless the parents consent."

You can get dessert by eating your vegetables. Or you can get dessert if your parents consent.

The Ways and Means committee has asked to see the returns in a closed session, so it has eaten its vegetables. The law demands they get their dessert.

Congress decides not to continue to pay his salary or fund his retirement. Next in line for the role please step up.

Unless Donald decides to override Congress by Royal-- ahem, I mean, Executive Order...

I'm sure he can spin not having his boy in the Treasury Department as a national emergency... and his disciples will swallow it.

Why are you still repeating this? Are you still misreading it?

I'll rewrite it for you:

The Secretary shall furnish the return, but only if the committee is in closed executive session. However, if the taxpayer consents, then the type of committee session doesn't matter and the Secretary can furnish the return regardless.
