Liberal groups' 'anyone-but-Biden' campaign hits former VP as 'out of step'

Former Vice President Joseph R. Bidenentered the presidential race Thursday with a roaring anti-Trump message and a claim to a front-runner position, but he immediately ran into a massive anyone-but-Biden campaign from liberal activists.

He made the long-anticipated announcement of his candidacy in an online video in which he took aim at President Trump and framed the 2020 election as “the battle for the soul of this nation.”

Mr. Biden, 76, enters as one of the favorites in a field of 20 candidates that is historically diverse and includes six women, five people of color and one member of the LGBTQ community.

His focus on racism right out of the gate highlights the pressure on Mr. Biden to build support not only with black voters, who are the backbone of the Democratic electorate, but also with liberal activists intent on showcasing the party’s diversity.

Justice Democrats, the liberal group that helped the give rise to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, warned that Mr. Biden is a relic of the past with a shady record on the issues they care about.

They're right. Biden is likeable but he has a big #MeToo problem. As I said in another thread (I think), he's also a little too invested in wringing his hands about "decorum". Someone on another online forum described it using this metaphor: Democrats standing on the sidelines of a basketball court yelling that "dogs can't play basketball" while a dog continues dunking on them and racking up points.

We don't need to compromise with the evil that cages migrant children or calls Charlottesville Nazis "very find people". We need to eradicate it from the halls of power and make America work for everyone - not just straight, white, wealthy Christians.

Yet Biden is the front runner in the Democrat field.

I read that Biden is the only candidate with a chance of being elected over Trump though I would call his chances microscopic.

Near the election both candidates will campaign toward the center of the political spectrum as the fringe positions do not appeal to the the majority. Appealing to the majority is the only way general elections are won.

Biden is the only Democrat who can accomplish appealing to the rust belt independents.

There are roughly 20 radicals running against Biden. It will be interesting where the big money Democrat donors put their dough.

Yeah that could be very interesting, a candidate who claims to be centrist or a candidate promising a bunch of freebies the country can't afford?

It will be a tough choice between ideological purity or the desire to govern and hope you can get programs through.

The Democrats who have most of the money want to rule and don't care how they get the votes to do so.

They'll back anyone they think can put them back in power and the rest of us suffer if they do get their way.
