49“I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!50I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished.51Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other!
Observation
Jesus is teaching that following Him will not be easy. It will cause division, within a family and within the world..
Application
This pinged me because it reminded me of some thoughts about Matthew 24:9‭‭,13‭,‬21‭‭,44 - Be ready for end of days - specifically our struggle to bring peace to the world.
As Christians living in the world today, we constantly strive to spread the love of Christ and bring peace to the world. But is this a fruitless effort? Should we even bother doing this? I wonder this because Jesus clearly tells us in Matthew 24:9,13,21,44 that at the end, near the time of the 2nd coming, the world will basically be a horrible place; Christians will be hated, many will have turned away from God, and sin and evil will be rampant. And then here in Luke 12:49, Jesus is telling us following Him will divide the world, not bring peace to the world. Given that we know this is to occur - and it must occur because Jesus foretold it - why constantly struggle against a world which is doomed? It seems to me the classic definition of insanity: We, as Christians, are trying to make the world a better (peaceful) place fully knowing the world must set "on fire" (Luke 12:49) before the 2nd coming. Perhaps we should ignore the world and just focus on ourselves and our families?

I always understood that verse to mean setting our heart (earth) or collectively the people of earth, on fire with love for Him and towards our neighbor. This love being the fire of divinity as per Hebrews 12:29, 1 John 4:8, Luke 3:16, etc.

Jesus's new teachings would cause conflict, even tear families apart He said:

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Christianity -- doing as Christ said for us to do -- radically undercuts the social power structures, in ways that those in power will hate and be angry about.

It overturns the money tables.

It enrages those being hypocritical.

In Christianity we are all truly equal, and that's not a social hierarchy of class or privilege or power over others.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

It's basically the end of the world for worldliness, and it therefore causes a lot of social strife -- angry effort/attacks to hold onto the old power and worldly ways. In nations where Christians are a small minority, they will be hated (and even in nations where they are not so small), because they threaten to cause the end of the way things have been.
