It's God that sits exalted above this world's globe, and the inhabitants thereof are grasshoppers. That stretches out the heavens, the reference being to the awning which is drawn over houses' courts, and spreads them out as a tent.

Academia is willing to shed its pride in its accuracy, if doing so will make the Bible look like bad.

In so doing, they make themselves look bad instead.

Case in point:

Bible

Isaiah 40:22a It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,

Academia

Isaiah 40:22a It is he that sitteth within the circle of the earth,

Atheists just don't want to accept the fact that the Holy Bible was the first historical document to mention the spherical shape of the earth. So they got to make up lies to make them feel better about being atheists.

You know why this is silly?

Even if it’s true that the Bible describes a spherical Earth, that doesn’t actually mean much. It’s quite clear that, while many thought the Earth was flat during that time, there were those who were figuring out its true shape, too. They didn’t need divine inspiration to do it, either, they just made some simple observations. It’s actually not that hard to figure out if you look into it.

If people during Biblical times could figure out the Earth was round without any divine inspiration, there’s no reason to think the people who wrote the Bible did.

Because it absolves him from having to face the flaws in his belief system. If you can blame all your problems, all your troubles, all that is wrong onto "them"... you can keep on happily living ever after in the belief that you are right in all points.
It’s amazing, isn’t it? Atheists make a up a measly percentage of the world’s population, and an even smaller percent through history, but to hear Fez tell it, we’re somehow responsible for every little bad thing to ever happen to Christianity.

Sorry, I'm on my phone. I don't see the post numbers here at CF.
Here it is again:

Notice what it says here:

Isaiah 40:22a It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers;

Get out a map of the United States and lay it flat on a table.

Now draw a circle anywhere within its borders.

Now go anywhere within that circle, get out of your car, and sit on the ground.

Now look around.

Do the people look like "grasshoppers"? that is, "small"?

I would say they don't.

That's because you're sitting within the circle, not upon it, as the Bible says.

So it's clear to me that this circle must be an arc going upward, not outward.

Like McDonald's "golden arches."

In other words, three dimensional -- a globe.

But there's a difference here.

The Bible isn't saying:

"Let me let you in on a secret: the earth is round."

It is saying:

"I sit above the earth (on its z-axis), and the people look like grasshoppers from up here."

It may be that the OP thinks anyone who does not share a particular view of the Bible is an "atheist."

My impression is, that the OP is claiming exactly that.
Then why does he say this?
This 2D flat interpretation is only less than 200 years old ...
If that's true, then for 5900 years people have known that the earth is round.

So God wouldn't be saying, "Let me let you in on a secret: the earth is round."

LOL, the "Z-axis" applies to a Flat Earth.

When you use an outdated translation and use a single word out of context you are going to get the meaning fo the verse wrong. That verse would not be phrased that way in modern English. You should be using a more modern translation.

I believe that to be the OP's assertion, that knowledge of a spherical Earth came to us first through the Bible. And further, that atheists began to deny this 200 years ago in order to discredit the Bible (why they waited so long is not made clear).

Mind you, that is merely my impression of the OP's comments.

More false attacks. This is rather shameful behavior. "Academia" does not make that claim, and neither does the Bible. One outdated and at times poorly translated version of the Bible makes your claim. Like it or not more modern translations are more accurate.

So now you're saying the Bible does not say the earth is flat?
I don't know about SZ, but I don't believe that the Bible teaches anything about the shape of the Earth one way or the other. In my opinion Isaiah 40:22 is consistent with either view.
