From what I am aware, Asperger's Syndrome and Autism are spectrum disorders, that is to say it is a cluster of symptoms which people have in varying degrees - caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. I have many friends with Autism and Aspergers. They are very intelligent, gifted people with an astute ability for solving problems. Despite the common misconceptions, I have found that many people with Autism and Aspergers are very empathetic and accepting of others, more so than a lot of neurotypical people I know.
Asperger'syndome basically is the top end of autism on trhe same specturm. People in that category don't like to be called "autistic" because the word brings up images of those who can't do anything. That is why they use a different name. Medically both forms are under the same diagnosis: autism spectrum disorder.
ASD itself is genetic. Environmental factors make it worse. It is worst in childhood; when kids grow up it's still there but less severe.
