I was looking up this verse I remembered and was surprised to see quite different verses given translations. Not just a difference in emphasis or word choice, but a totally different meaning.
(I John 5: 6-7 ESV) 6 This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify:8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
NIV, RSV, NSAB, NRSV, CSB....those ones are basically the same as the ESV. But then you get to the KJV.
(I John 5:6-7 KJV) 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
The Catholic Douay Rheims version, the NKJV , YLT... they translate it like the KJV. So which ones is correct? I think it's the ESV, personally, but no matter which one you choose, it seems like a pretty big error to slip in between different translations.
