Pope Francis, in plea for South Sudan peace, stuns leaders by kissing their shoes

I think it's really, really easy to feel tempted towards cynicism in Pope Francis' pontificate. Hopefully, this helps. Hopefully, this was not just a photo-op.

(Sigh) I think the pope is well intentioned. But honestly at this point I think he's pretty clueless and the most naive pope we've had in a long time.

God sees and it is God who changes hearts.

I look at it as an act of humility and as a plea on behalf of the people. The Pope was clearly coming to speak on their behalf.

Why is it disgusting?

South Sudan has Christians and animists whereas Sudan is predominately Muslim. Salva Kiir is reportedly a Christian. But I couldn't find clear info on the other guy's religion.

I found this article insightful, it does not address the Pope and the leaders of Sudan directly. It's simply a reflection on what it means for us as Christians that our Lord Jesus washed Judas' feet. I personally believe a similar theology is behind the Pope's actions:
