My daughter goes to Sunday school but I've been augmenting her time there with nightly Bible readings. We get out highlighters, special pens, and stickers and go to town...at this age, you can't make it too formal so we have a lot of fun reading verses, deciding how to mark them, and discussing them.

My daughter is a bit sensitive to scary/violent things (long story but the root cause is medical) and so I've tried to find positive, uplifting passages for her. Of course, in time we will cover everything, but at this time I'm just fanning the flames of her growing passion for the Lord, so the goal is to keep her reading.

Below is the first set of verses I picked out (we're nearly done with them). Next up I was going to work through the parables with her. I'm curious what other suggestions people might make? I threw together the list below more or less from memory. (The "names" are the titles I put on her sticker sheet - she picks one a night).

  • Rejoice Always: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • Ten Commandments: Exodus 20:1-7
  • The Lord is My Shepherd: Psalms 23
  • You Are Young: 1 Timothy 4:12
  • Kids & Dads: Colossians 3:20-21
  • Armor of God: Ephesians 6:10-20
  • Hymn of Love: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
  • Most Famous: John 3:16
  • Simple Rules: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
  • Two Commandments: Matthew 22:37-39
  • Be Nice!: Ephesians 4:31-32
  • The Unforgiving Servant: Matthew 18:21-35
  • Jesus and Children: Matthew 18:2-6
  • God Has a Plan For You: Jeremiah 29:11
  • The Big Scene!: Matthew 25:31-46
  • Peter's Sinking Feeling: Matthew 14:22-33
  • The Poor Window: Luke 21:1-4
  • The True Vine: John 15:1-5
  • Chill Out, Dude: Luke 12:22-26
  • Rejoice!: Philippians 4:4-7
  • Be Brave!: Joshua 1:9
  • Beautiful Prayer: Numbers 6:24-26
  • God Goes Gluten Free: Joel 1:11 (my daughter has celiac so it's kind of a family joke)
  • God Is With Us: Romans 8:38-39
  • Mind Blowing: Psalms 19:1-4

For the medical aspect, keep on searching for helps , from a wide variety of Godly sources (licensed Godly practitioners) .... many ways and methods, by testing, help a lot, but are rarely used or even known by the general public.

(not discounting prayer at all , no. Already positively expect continual daily prayer)

These would be very short readings, but if you are looking for verses and passages that are already associated with topics, you might want to take a look at the Navigator's Topical Memory System. Just scroll down a bit when you get there and you'll see two verses next to each topic. This is the memory system that the Navigators have been using to train their missionaries with from nearly 100 years now.

You can get the TMS as an Apple or Android app now too.

She is probably a little too young* to begin memorizing verses and passages, but they will be there for her when she is :)

*(of course, if she has already memorized the "Our Father" prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), I had by her age, then she is ready to memorize other verses/passages too .. if she wants to, that is ;)).

As for passages off the top of my head, there is John 1:1-3 + John 1:14 (who Jesus really is); Genesis 1-3 (The Creation & the Fall); Isaiah 9:6-7; Matthew 1:18-2:23 & Luke 1:5-2:52 (prophesy and events surrounding the Incarnation & Jesus' early life); Matthew 3:1-12 (John the Baptist); Matthew 7:12 (The Golden Rule); Matthew 14:13-33 (5,000 fed/Jesus walks on the water); John 20 (events surrounding the Resurrection). There are also the books of Ruth and Esther in the OT that she may find interesting, and the Throne Room scenes in Isaiah 6:1-4 and Revelation 4. I could go on and on :)

p.s. - I noticed that you are pretty new around here, so I should also say, WELCOME TO CF

Add in The Good Samaritan.

My 9-year old one Sunday chose to stay in the service with us instead of going to children's church...

The Gospel reading was The Good Samaritan (full passage including the question and answer at end).

I noticed she was really rapt, totally absorbing the passage, hanging on every word...

What a blessing!!
