Why do you think they were pagan at the time? Nothing indicates it. It just says that he preached the gospel to them. Any decent preacher does this every week. I’m planning on hearing the gospel preached today.
There’s no reason to assume that they were pagan.
Hammster,
Have you not read all of 1 & 2 Corinthians and discerned that Paul had to address the issue of idolatry in these letters, especially in 1 Cor as they were saved from an idolatrous background?
There was a smallish community of Jews in Corinth, but most were Gentiles (1 Cor 1). Some non-believing Corinthians were idolaters (1 Cor 8; 1 Cor 10).
Corinth in the first century was steeped in the paganism of the mystery religions. See: Paganism and the Christians at Corinth – The Mystery Religions ...
I do not hear the Gospel preached every Sunday at my church. My pastor is a faithful biblical expositor. He preaches what is in the text as he works his way through a book of the Bible. If the Gospel content is not in that section of Scripture, he doesn't suppose it should be there. He is a faithful exegete of the Scripture and that leads to a sound exposition to put it in the language of the people.
