As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. - Genesis 50:20

For discussion

Was God using their actions for good (making lemonade out of lemons)?

Or

Is this what He wanted to happen and He ensured that it would?

Joseph's brothers hated him because his father favored him more than his brothers. And they sold him into slavery in Egypt, intending to get rid of him. Then they let their father fool himself into believing that Joseph was dead. His father suffered greatly for years, without those sons letting him know his beloved son was still alive . . . or could be.

Then there was the famine which drove them to go to Egypt to seek food. And by then Joseph had been blessed by God and used to take charge of the resources of Egypt, so those brothers would have a . . . reunion . . . with Joseph. They were in for a big surprise, to say the least.

Joseph helped them, ministered loving and kind forgiveness to them, and this while he was helping so many people to have food so they would not all die.

God was using their wrong actions to set Joseph up to do all-loving good to people. While we go through something for Jesus, we can do what is all-loving, not only for our own selves and ones closer to us.

Joseph understood this > he told them it was God's intention, how he had been sent to Egypt before them so he could prepare resources for their needs when the famine came. God knew all along how there would be the famine, and He had things in His control of those brothers, so Joseph would be sold into Egypt so then God would use Joseph to help his family plus so many other people.

So, He used those brothers, the way they were, to accomplish His purpose. But he was, of course, not pleased with them, how they hated their own brother and so betrayed their own father to so suffer for so long.

But this is similar to what He did with Jesus, too. He used the horrible people who hated and tortured and murdered Christ God's own Son. But those who have not repented of that are in major trouble. But with God we can make good use of the crucifixion of Jesus. It has turned out for such great and all-loving good, for us who have trusted in Jesus > Ephesians 1:12.

Because God is all-loving, He uses things not only for us ourselves, but for all-loving good. So, we need to have this focus in our praying, caring for any and all people and not only for our own selves, in order for us to be capable of benefitting from how God answers our prayers, which He always is doing. We need to have the perception, patience, and all-caring creativity of His love >

"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment." (Philippians 1:9)

So, this takes maturing and correction in our character.

So, then > did those brothers really benefit from how God used Joseph to help them? They needed to truly change in their hearts, so they could really benefit. But Joseph was kind even to Egyptians who were not godly; he used his time of trouble to reach them and help them to know the true and living God. This is also what was intended, I would say.

In any situation, if we are God's way, we too can help others with our example and message of who and how God is, and how the Gospel is for us. So, thank You, God, for this.

That’s for that. However, I’m not sure how you are addressing the questions in the OP.

Was God using their actions for good (making lemonade out of lemons)?
Joseph’s brothers acted within their very natures which in this case was evil in dealing with Joseph.

Is this what He wanted to happen and He ensured that it would?
God’s Will and Purpose will be done.

Yet the best answer I can give is the one Jospeh gave which in my first reply was “yes.”

Genesis 45: NASB

4Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near me.” And they did so.

“I am Joseph, your brother,” he said, “the one you sold into Egypt! 5And now, do not be distressed or angry with yourselves that you sold me into this place, because it was to save lives that God sent me before you. 6For the famine has covered the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting. 7God sent me before you to preserve you as a remnant on the earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.a 8Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me Pharaoh's adviser—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

I was offering background to feed us along with the simple answer which I would say is yes, for each question. More simply >
Was God using their actions for good (making lemonade out of lemons)?
Yes, God always uses all things somehow for His good; so yes.
Is this what He wanted to happen and He ensured that it would?
Yes, God is in control to make sure His all-loving purposes happen; so yes.

I put in extra detail so people who do not know this story might be able to appreciate what horrible things God is able to use for His good > even brothers hating in a family and betraying their own father.

Joseph and Daniel are comparable in much of their circumstances especially in being promoted from slave to semi-ruler of the land. In that sense what was meant for evil did become good in God’s movement. In Joseph’s case it was to promote His chosen family out of the famine in the land, while fulfilling the prophesy given to Abraham that they would be exiled. During that time they became not just a family but a nation. Yet Joseph also committed an evil against the people he ruled over by bringing their lands into the ownership of the Pharaoh during his administration. Not sure that is what you would call lemon-aide?

Daniel suffered much in captivity also and he eschewed evil of all kinds. From the food he ate, to prayer that was outlawed in the land. His position was acknowledged by God to be in the ranks with Job and Noah. His mode of operanda differed from Joseph in that he seemed to prefer to sit back and watch the story of God unfold rather than be a major player in it.

A bit more background to feed along.
