Ephesians 6:12 verse describes the spiritual battle that exists in the lives of believers. It does so perhaps better than any other words in Scripture. First, Paul affirms our battle is indeed spiritual, not physical. The enemies we face, ultimately, are not people or objects. The Devil may use those as part of his attack, but our true opponent is not other people: it is sin.

Second, Paul identifies our spiritual enemies. This list is commonly interpreted as a vague listing of the "ranks" within the demonic armies. "Rulers" seem to indicate a top level of evil spiritual forces. "Authorities" refer to general forces of evil attacking believers. "Cosmic powers" seems to refer to the worldwide nature of this spiritual battle. "Evil in the heavenly places" again emphasizes a battle beyond this world.

Spiritual battles can occur at all levels, anywhere across this world and beyond. The believer must be prepared for all types of attacks through putting on God's armor, as Paul describes.

Here are links to 2 articles I think will be helpful to you:

What are the heavenly places/realms?
What does the Bible say about spiritual warfare?
Thank you. As i read the first one this scripture came to mind, i cant remember if anyone already posted it or not. Perhaps heavenly realms is not God's heaven but is instead the air e.g. the heavens?

Ephesians 2:2 New International Version (NIV)
2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

Hi, W2L, long time no see. :)

I believe that Paul is saying that our struggle is not against people. IOW, we can't view people as THE enemy. Satan is the enemy, and our struggle is against him and his demons, who are the "spiritual forces of wickedness."

Jesus said to love those who hate us and persecute us, not see them as the enemy or fight against them. We are to show people who are lost that Jesus loves them and died for them.

Also, I believe that the term "heavenly realm" involves the spiritual realm. The good forces of this realm would be angels, of course. The evil forces in this realm would be demons.

One of our main struggles as Christians is against giving in to the temptations of devil, who tries to work in our minds to tempt us to disobey God. Like Jesus in the wilderness, we are tempted by the demonic forces to do those things that displease our Heavenly Father. We need to learn to identify when we are being tempted and fight these temptations. By God's grace, we can have victory over them.
Hi Deborah :wave:Thank you.

12 For our struggle is not against [a]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

How is this scripture followed?
Ephesians 2:2 New International Version (NIV)
2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

See? As you no longer follow the ways of this world (most people still do follow the ways of this world/ the devil, demons) ,
remember then how were you set free from the "ruler of the kingdom of the air" (the devil) - the spirit who is still now at work in those who are disobedient (the sons of disobedience) ....

The question would then become, how do we fight against these rulers? Preach the word?

How is this scripture followed? The struggle is not against flesh and blood, but it is against people? Yes? No? I guess its a spiritual battle to become separate from the world as God commands? Is that our struggle? Or perhaps is about persecution? Also, how do we struggle against spiritual forces in the heavenly realms? What is a heavenly realm?

"wickedness in heavenly places"

Ephesians 2

6and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus

therefore believers (heavenly places) experience the spiritual forces of satan

It is a spiritual battle.

Thank you. So you are saying that the "rulers" are demons?
In this context, yes.

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

So you are saying that the "rulers" are demons?
No - fallen angels. They are above demons in the devil’s command structure.

The first century church believed that the people that persecuted them were under a delusion, that's why they didn't retaliate, they actually felt sorry for them. You can see it in their theology, atonement was what they called the 'ransom theory', where the invading army was paid tribute to withdraw from their occupied territories, because that's how it was done in that day. The powers and principalities of this day and age we might see as demonic, but most likely people would look at the strongholds of Satan as the places that inspire wickedness.

The spiritual warfare of Ephesians 6, it should be noted, comes late in the epistle. What also should be appreciated is that Ephesus was the mother church to the churches of Asia Minor, planting and nurturing at least seven of them. They held the line on doctrine, exposing false teachers and false apostles. Paul when he left Ephesus he warned them that after he was gone wolves would come, not sparing the flock. Those wolves came and the elders of Ephesus stood their ground, driving off every one of them. Jesus says in his letter to the churches of Asia Minor that he had one thing against them, that they had left their first love. Now the first thing you might think is that their first love would be him, but I don't think that's what he was talking about. I think they got very good at running off the wolves, the false teachers and apostles, and forgot to minister to the body of believers they grew up like children. So while they were busy polishing up their armor and sharpening their swords, the churches were suffering neglect from the one body of believers that had always loved them most.

Paul tells us, when you have done everything to stand, stand therefore. Let's not forget what Paul told them to stand on, the gospel of our peace. Included is the fact that Jesus' disciples are required to love one another, building one another up in their faith, sharing the gospel with whosoever will receive it. In those days a Roman Commander wasn't praised for what he could take, but what he could keep. That's why Paul is saying, stand therefore, because this church building mother church needed to do the hard work involved in holding onto what so many had worked so hard to build.

That's how you do it, continue building the body of Christ.

Grace and peace,
Mark

Satan the Devil and his “wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places” (demons) are also rulers. He is spoken of as “the ruler of this world” and “the ruler of the authority of the air.” (Matthew 12:24; John 12:31; 14:30; Ephesians 2:2; 6:11, 12) That all the governments of this world are under his power is indicated by his offering them to Jesus Christ at the price of an act of worship. (Matthew 4:8, 9) Satan gives these governments their authority. (Revelation 13:2) Within his organization the demons also exercise ruling power. They are referred to as “the world rulers of this darkness” who have exercised authority over the world powers of history, as, for example, the invisible ‘princes’ over Persia and Greece.-Daniel 10:13, 20.

Ephesus was the center of all kinds of demonism. In fact, the city was known around the world for its many forms of magic. The demons, then, were especially active at Ephesus, and no doubt to offset the influence of magic and sorcery and to help righthearted Ephesians break free from these demonic practices, Paul performed miracles by God’s spirit; these even included the expelling of wicked spirits.-Acts 19:11, 12.

Because of Paul’s preaching, the miraculous works he performed, and the defeat of the exorcising Jews, quite a number of Ephesians became Christians. No doubt many of these persons had indulged in some form of magical practices. (Acts 19:19) In view of such prevalence of magic at Ephesus and the practice of many forms of demonism, it was most appropriate that Paul gave the Ephesian Christians fine counsel about fighting against wicked spirit forces by putting on “the complete suit of armor from God.” No doubt some of those who broke free from the practice of magic would be harassed by demons, and Paul’s counsel would help them to resist the wicked spirits.
