The name of God is "I Am who I Am" (Exodus 3:14). Of course this is English. In Hebrew as God spoke it to Moses, it was "HaYah asher HaYah". Now "HaYah" is the the Hebrew verb of eternal self-existence. It is where we get the name "Yahweh" or "Jehovah" or "YHWH" for short. The key here is to remember that "I AM" comes from the Hebrew "Yah"

Now look at the name "Jesus". That too is English. It's our translation of Hebrew name "Joshua" which is English for the Hebrew name "Yahshua". This Name can be broken into 2 parts: "Yah" and "shua". "Yah" means "I AM" and "shua" means "Salvation".

Therefore, "Jesus" literally means "I AM Salvation" and it represents Jesus' 2 natures: God and Man. "I AM" represents God Himself, who was inside the body of Jesus. That is the One True God. God is Spirit. (John 4:24). But "shua" or "Salvation" represents the flesh and blood body of Jesus. That part is Man.

Jesus was a flesh and blood body with the fullness of God inside. 2 natures in 1 person. This is how He could say "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58) and "I and the Father are One" (John 10:30) and again "I am in the Father and the Father is in Me. If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. (John 14:9-11).

God is to be found inside of Jesus Christ. "Jesus" is the Word of Truth from the Beginning, God (John 1:1). And this is how you "Rightly divide the Word of Truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).

I am thankful that the Lord hears all those people from every nation, tribe, people group, dialect, tongue, around the world who call upon Him in their own language & dialect.

He hears them & rejoices that they are His sheep! He is the One who confused their languages & knows His own by name & answers their prayers in whatever language or dialect of that language they call out to Him in. I was in a prayer group with people from different languages & though I could not understand them all (Russian, Moldavian, Spanish, etc.), their prayers as Christians were fervent in calling upon the same Lord.

There were 15 people groups listed in Acts 2 and numerous dialects within each of those language areas. 3000 alone came to know Christ that day so the total crowd listening but have been 10,000 or more that day.

Yet they all heard the Holy Spirit giving utterance through the gathered church assembly, sounding like a native speaker telling of the wonderful acts of God in their own dialect that they were born in & learned! Now that was indeed an awesome miracle & witness to the living Creator God!

Actually, in English, the word name Jesus doesn't mean anything.

True, but it still has meaning. "Jesus" is the English transliteration of "Iesus", the Latin form of the Greek form of "Yeshua", which, as @Jonathan Mathews said, is Hebrew for "I AM salvation", or "The Lord saves".

No worries.

Remember if Frank in New York goes to Britain, Australia, Israel, Germany, Russia, Iceland, or Japan, he is still called Frank.

Online might be more examples of the pertinence of this and people's names that do not change , vs why people did change from what Scripture says when translated into English. (several things, btw) .... for research, not to derail this thread.

Jewish Encyclopedia-JOSHUA (JEHOSHUA):
Name of several Biblical personages.
In Hebrew Yhwshwa (Deut. iii. 21; Judges ii. 7) and commonly yhwshw (Judges ii. 7a; Ex. xvii. 9; Josh. i. 1) correspond to alyshwa = "helped by Yhwh," the shorter form being hwsha = "help" or "one who helped" (Num. xiii. 8; Deut. xxxii. 44; here probably an error for yhwsha ). The Septuagint has Ἰησους; the Vulgate, usually "Josue," but "Jesus" in Ecclus. (Sirach) xlvi. 1; I Macc. ii. 55; II Macc. xii. 15, identical with yshwa , the post-exilic form of the name.

That's a good point, but that wasn't always the case. Well into the Renaissance, people's names would often be altered to sound more Latin (i. e., Danish scientist Ole Worm's name becomes Olaus Wormius when his works are in Latin, King James VI and I of Scotland and England becomes Jacobus Rex in Latin, etc.).

I'm not denying that there are differences when Scripture is translated into English, though. It's definitely important to go back to the original wording when possible, or to look up another translation to cross-reference what's said.

God never left His true name for humans simply because insulting God by His name is an unforgivable sin. That's why the only name used to bear insults from human sinners is Jesus.

Revelation 3:12 (NIV2011)
The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.

It meant enough to God to save me by it when I used it in prayer and was Born Again.
I did not say there is no power or no salvation in the Name of Jesus, only that in English it lacks meaning that His Name Means in Hebrew. Other names usually are not changed so much as His was.
