Every day I continually ask God a question. I ask and ask, then I ask some more. I’ve been asking him this same question for a very long time now. Despite endlessly pleading for an answer, I never seem to hear back from God. I pour out my heart, pleading for an answer—but to no avail. God never responds. He never gives me an answer.

I would like for everyone to please pray to God and ask him to answer my question. I really need an answer, because if I don’t hear from him my life will continue falling apart, and I'll turn out to be an abject failure in everything.

I've personally found that God only makes us wait on things to make us appreciate them when we finally receive them, or because they would not be spiritually beneficial. Very few of my prayers have been answered, but God has done other things so clearly in my life that encourage me elsewhere. I've been in a depressive, skeptical state for at least 12 years now, slowly getting worse. Yet despite many things I've done in the hopes of fixing it, including joining a monastery for a time- it doesn't go away. Why? I don't know. But I have faith that in the end the reward will outweigh the pain.

Keep strong and keep faith. May the Lord Jesus Christ son of God have mercy on you, and answer your petitions.

I'm praying for you, Nora. Have you ever gotten an answer from God when you've asked for one?

Hi Nora, I have a very close catholic friend, and we often talk for hours, and one evening, late, he told me he prays the Our Father (the Lord's Prayer, from Matthew chapter 6), 3 times a day. To me this was truly surprising, because the words say "give us this day our daily bread", and to me it just seems to mean to pray it once in a day, with faith (Mark chapter 11: pray with belief).

And I thought: if I prayed the Lord's Prayer 3 times a day, it would...be extremely difficult for me for it not to become just a recitation too often. But praying it once a day, I feel like I'm grabbing a life preserver, to keep me from sinking. (to say that would be more hyperbole on some days, but closer to not hyperbole on occasional days). In this perfect prayer that is perfectly aligned to God's will, with perfect words that we can know with total and perfect certainty are exactly what we most ought to pray for (just look at the words, from Christ Himself), I think anyone reading Christ saying them in Matthew chapter 6, with their own eyes, can have total confidence in them, and pray with the faith He says to pray with. I mention that because it's a powerful step, to really pray this perfect prayer with full faith. Now, the way I found prayer in the most profound way was as a prodigal praying to God "God...make a way from me to you.... ...Bring me to you", and that prayer I prayed in that moment with faith, and He responded, dramatically, and here I am now restored, and I did once pray a question, a crucial one, about a relationship, where the answer was very high stakes, and that prayer was answered, but I was praying it in fear of the Lord (Christ even instructs us to fear the Lord), and with faith He would decide the issue, as I could not, wasn't competent to, and I was praying it from a very surrendered place, where I was going to do whatever He decided (though I don't know this is required, but it helps show that I believed as I prayed that He would answer somehow, which is faith that He will do what is right to me, that His will is the right way). I'm just mentioning some things, because of how if we pray fully the ways Jesus said in the gospels, doing all the 5 or 6 things He said about prayer, then we can really believe, even if the answer isn't immediately clear (though sometimes it is!). In the Lord's prayer we pray "Thy will be done", and it's a certain amount of being truly surrendered, yes, to that, because consider: He might will something we didn't expect, but it helps so much, so very much, to read and dwell on the word's Christ said in the gospels, because of how that already is already making us more aligned to His will, just to truly listen and hear, and remember His words, day by day. I mention this because when I finally got to the place of asking that crucial question in prayer, I'd already been in years of praying the ways Christ said, such as from the Gospel of John, and Matthew, and Mark, so I was asking for God's will to decide what I could not.

Where are you expecting the answer to come from?
We know that God has heard the prayer, because the Scripture says, "Be not anxious for anything, but by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make your requests to God, and the peace of God that passes all understand will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
So, He may not be deciding to give you some type of bolt from the blue or special revelation as the answer. Perhaps He may be waiting for you to read the Bible and give you the answer through there. After all, He wrote it and in it He has already given all the answers we will never need. It is a matter of searching for the answer you need.
The Scripture says, "If you search for Me with all your heart, you will find Me."
Maybe God is showing you that He is not a vending machine where you press a button and out pops the answer. Maybe the answer is in Him, and you need to find Him, get into fellowship with Him through prayer and the world, "Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you."
Perhaps there is some unconfessed sin somewhere or restitution you need to make before God can work with you. Something like that can hide God's face from you. "Search me, O God, and see if there by any wicked way in me". and "Renew a clean heart and a right spirit within me."
Or He might be teaching you the lesson of waiting patiently on Him, "They that wait upon the Lord shall rise up as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Or, He is waiting for you to do His will in some area of your life: "For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise".

We have sunny days and cloudy days. Just because things are a bit dark for you right now, it doesn't mean that it is the darkness of night where nothing can be done. When a cloud comes over the sun, it is darker, but there is still enough light to see where you are going. There are still things you can do:
Read the Bible
Spend time in prayer
Attend church and hear the message
Fellowship with other Christians
Go about your normal duties at home and at work
Continue with the spiritual work that God has already given you.

Putting all these things on hold while you wait for the answer you want will not benefit you at all. Often the answer comes in the midst of all the things you normally do.

Hi Nora, here are two important words that will help you, with an elaboration on those two words. You'll find them in the opening moments of this inspirational video, but if you have the time to listen through it all (14 min), I believe you will find it to be both an encouragement and a blessing :)

I see that you've been given some excellent Scripture references already in this thread, so I'll add some inspirational quotes that may prove to be useful to you as well.

"God never withholds from His child that which His love and wisdom call good. He never denies our heart's desire except to give us something better." ~Missionary/Author Elisabeth Elliot

"God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will, a will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what He is up to." ~Elisabeth Elliot

"This hard place in which you perhaps find yourself is the very place in which God is giving you opportunity to look only to Him, to spend time in prayer, and to learn long-suffering, gentleness, meekness - in short, to learn the depths of the love that Christ Himself has poured out on all of us." ~Elisabeth Elliot

"Instead of a river, God often gives us a brook, which may be running today and dried up tomorrow. Why? To teach us not to rest in our blessings, but in the Blesser Himself." ~Pastor/Theologian A. W. Pink
--David
p.s. - two more helpful words (well, really one).

"Two words will help you cope when you run low on hope: accept and trust." ~Pastor Chuck Swindoll

The Father doesn't really want you to be pleading with Him. Would you plead with a wonderful earthly Father if you had a problem he could easily solve? All your problems are easy for the Father to solve. Prayers of faith are the ones that get answered. Faith involves a kind of rest, a believing not that He could help you, but that He WILL help you.

I pray that you will be given rest in the Lord and insight that you need.

I know it's difficult to be patient, but sometimes you have to be. I have been asking God a certain question for a long time now and it still seems like I'm not getting an answer. it is possible that you already have the answer to your question and you just need to realize it. it is also possible that God doesn't want to answer your question for whatever reason. either way, I am praying for God's will in your life :) He is always good !

Whatever you face, whatever darkness and confusion threatens to overwhelm, may our Lord grant you peace, clarity, security, and most of, an answer truly of Him.

John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”
