So don't go. Unless you're one of the leaders of the event, you can easily bail.

It doesn't hurt to let the leaders know because it can be frustrating to have people promise to attend and never show up without any explanation.

Same here... I wake up at times also... and thinking about (maybe) missing work today... then I realize I've been retired over ten years.

You could still tell someone you know who will be there, in case someone asks about you. It depends how important your presence is, I guess.
