What does it mean to love the world?

I’m pretty sure I do. This world is all I ever knew & I enjoy amusements, entertainment, buying things, & conveniences. I have not been a good steward and have brought much financial hardships on my family. I don’t think God chose me to be his child & I mourn because of the person I am. I just didn’t get it & now it seems I’m under judgement. Please pray for me if you feel there is hope.

Hi @Inagony, as long as you live, there is ~always~ hope in Christ :) I too used to mourn because of the person I was. It felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on me because of the guilt I felt over my sins.

But then I found out that the Lord came here to save sinners, the ungodly/wicked who are w/o hope, just like I felt I was .. Romans 4:5; Mark 2:17, so there's nothing you've ever done that He will not forgive you of if you ask Him to :amen:

You can, in fact, do so right now (become a Christian) if you want to. Just confess all of your sins to Him and ask Him to forgive you of them (and He will .. 1 John 1:9; Romans 10:9-10). Then choose to surrender the reins of your life to Him by asking the Lord Jesus to come into your life as both your Lord and your Savior, believing/trusting/knowing that the One who loves you so much that He chose to die for you (so that He wouldn't have to live life w/o you in eternity, nor you w/o Him), will always want the very best for you as well .. e.g. John 3:16; Romans 5:8-10, 8:28, 32. And then He (who knows and understands what you truly need far better than you could ever hope to yourself .. because He can truly see the big picture of your life from start to finish, yes :)) will begin to guide you and guard you/see you safely through this life to be with Him in Glory.

His salvation is principally from two things, 1. sin in this life, and 2. God's wrath in the age to come. You will also be given a new nature that includes the power/ability/desire not to sin anymore.

Also, once you have confessed your sins to God and believed in/given your life to Jesus, then ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit .. cf 1 Corinthians 2:12-16.

Praying for you!

God bless you! (Numbers 6:24-26)

--David

John 5
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has* eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

*(We are saved from the moment we first believe!)

I like the saying of "In the world but not of the world". That there is a balance between what we do on Earth and what we do for God, and that God is our focus and meaning for life. I don't think it's wrong necessarily to enjoy some food or maybe even see a good movie here and there, to have a good conversation or take a drive in a car God has provided for you to have.

Sure you might have some difficulties like in managing money but that can be fixed by making adjustments here and there. What I'm saying is I don't want you to discount yourself from the race because you're confusing being in this world with possibly being of the world, these are two different things.

Granted I don't know you or what you're going through but I do know God can help you with everything. I know for myself personally tithing helps me to give 10% of my first fruits to God and He always seems to make ends meet with me financially, no matter how tight my budget may seem at the moment.

Is there a difference between conviction & condemnation

We are all condemned because even Romans states:

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

So we deserve judgement, but Christ just like his Father is full of mercy and lovingkindness.

Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Conviction leads to repentance, so confess your sins to the Lord and go forward knowing you are forgiven.

Proverbs 28:13
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

God bless you my friend.

The word translated as "world" most frequently in the New Testament is the Greek word kosmos. It's most basic meaning is "order" or "arrangement". The ancient Greeks in seeking to make sense of reality came to use kosmos to refer to the ordered arrangement of the universe, and so could be used in that way; and they further sought to understand what all of this is and why it is--that was the birth of the western philosophical tradition among the Greeks.

When the New Testament talks about "the world" in a negative sense, it's not referring to the natural world as though God's creation is bad; but is talking about the governing structures we see at the moment. "The world" here is the way of the world, the way the world is ordered. For example with the powerful at the top and the powerless at the bottom, where the rich oppress the poor, where people engage in violence, hostility, and endless war against one another. Where greed, malice, envy, strife, etc are the dominant forces.

The problem isn't liking mundane things--television, food, music, friendly company, animals, plants, nature in general, etc--the problem is having one's affection for the dominating power structure we see. Where "might makes right", where people thirst and hunger for power, wealth, and dominance--and leave others to suffer. It is our spiritual ailment of sin and sinfulness against one another and the rest of God's creation, it is the systems of power that we've constructed which empower us to satisfy our selfish and destructive desires to place ourselves up and above others.

"Worldliness" isn't about innocuous things like clothing, food, musical preferences, or anything mundane and benign like that; but is about sharing in the vices of the world, such as power, violence, dominance, greed, envy, pride, and so forth.
