That doesn't surprise me at all, it fits with my experience. Alot of younger people in this country have joked about that, perhaps half-seriously.

Out of 7,612 people who crossed illegally into Canada from the USA during the first four months of 2018, 7,307 came into Quebec — 2,479 in April alone, a 32 per cent increase from March. Manitoba and British Columbia received the remainder, with about 150 asylum seekers each entering those provinces so far in 2018. The Quebec government said projections suggested there could be as many as 400 crossings per day this summer, compared to 250 in 2017.

It would be funny but I91 has become a main drug and human trafficking route from Canada to the US, including RX medications. We got funding for a temporary border patrol stop at the intersection of I89 and I91 during the Bush Jr era, the funds to make it permanent were allocated under Obama because of the huge dent it was making and building started immediately, but they were cut by Trump.
It’s not like he didn’t know that’s a major drug route... He famously came to my state of NH and called us a “drug den” and said an entire city was filled with crack heads and heroin addicts. When there was a huge “town hall” his team called for, the people from both VT and NH faced the Trump administration down, saying our drug rehab funding was the lowest in the nation, had the highest number of patient to caregiver ratio, and it was leading to a collapse of a hospital in Burlington VT and a crisis for law enforcement in Nashua, and we needed help in the form of funding allocated to us under Obama.
Instead he opted to not give us our funding, prompting us to sue, and cut out border patrol funding to zip. There’s now a big dig hole by the interstate where the building was going to be and it’s abandoned, and 91 has seen a huge spike in drugs and crime and drug related crime.
It’s actually a big problem for us, but because NH went blue the last several elections and VT and Mass will always be blue, Republicans aren’t giving our issue the attention it needs because they won’t win votes. Until the people smuggling in the drugs change skin color, they won’t.

Given that Canada shares 5250 miles of border with the US, I'm surprised that any "self-respecting" illegal would get caught.
The Alaska/Yukon-British Columbia border alone is approximately as long as the US/Mexico border and infinitely more difficult to monitor - one could easily smuggle a small army of illegals across it without anyone ever knowing!

There about eight times as many illegal crossing into Canada from the USA as in the reverse direction in several places along the border it is only a matter of crossing the street and in one location if you got up and moved to a different barberchair you would cross the border. I am reminded of an old joke:
A farm couple in Saskatchewan had their farm right up against the American border. North Dakota was just across the fence line. They had been aware for years that there was some dispute as to just where the border was. One day the mail brought an official envelope from the Canada / USA Border Commission. The husband read it aloud. It told them that after all relevant documents had been reviewed and a new survey had been completed, their property was determined to be in the USA and that their farm was now in North Dakota. They were asked to sign a document to acknowledge receipt of the notice and that they were not going to appeal the decision. The wife said “Sign it Frank, sign it! I don’t think that I can handle another Canadian winter!”
