Students at a New York college routinely ranked as one of the most liberal in America are accusing administrators of not being progressive enough – unless they accept a long list of demands, including taking teaching duties away from “racist white professors” and providing laundry detergent -- and softener -- for all.

The group, which describes itself as “students who can speak to the injustices imposed on people of color by this institution on a daily basis”, is demanding that, among other requests:

  • “All campus laundry rooms are to supply laundry detergent and softener on a consistent basis for all students, faculty and staff.”
  • “Students of color should not be forced to resort to racist white professors in order to have access to their own history. It is crucial that the College offer courses taught about people of color by people of color so that students may engage in and produce meaningful work that represents them authentically.”
  • “When dining options are closed on campus, the College must provide free meals for students staying on campus, including vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan, halal, and kosher options.”
  • Students from the Diaspora Coalition and “at least three faculty members of color” are allowed to conduct a tenure review surrounding the position of politics professor Samuel Abrams – who they describe as “an anti-queer, misogynist and racist who actively targets queer people, women and people of color.” They also want Abrams to publicly apologize for writing an op-ed for the New York Times last year.

While I'm all for protesting for a worthy cause, most of these college articles make me cringe. Free Laundry detergent? And are they saying that all white history teachers need to resign?

If my son were refusing to take his classes at a $54,440 a year college because of this list, I wouldn't be happy.

Laundry soap is a reasonable and color blind request.
Any other requests that include skin color should be dismissed as color biased requests.
Any requests that acknowledge sexual differences should be dismissed as sexually biased requests.
Food options are voluntary and usually at the students discretion and control.
No changes are needed.

The free laundry detergent is odd, but most of the demands make sense to me. And they aren't aren't saying that all White history teachers need to resign. They are saying instead that stuff like (this is an example from my own undergraduate education in a state school in a red state) Comparative African American Cultures shouldn't be thought by a upper middle class White man.

Samuel Adams is the one that sounds like the whiny brat.

It's not surprising that most faculty on a college campus are more aligned with liberal social and political values, nor does it seem inherently unfair.

Most likely, we are in for a long run of such things now that younger people have been convinced that they deserve to have everything for free and that there is also no good reason everything cannot be free.
Except of course it's not "free." Generally when activists talk about something being free they understand that it's being paid for from somewhere else. They just mean free at the point of purchase. Considering that these students are paying 50k a year to go to this school, they probably think that they should both have more say into the content of classes and how some of their tuition money is used.
