A Study of the Scriptures: The New Testament.

Warning: Please Read Thread Rules Below Before Posting.

Rule #1. This is not a debate thread; Nor is it an insult thread. This is a study thread. If you disagree with an interpretation or view expressed here, you can say how you disagree in one or two sentences, but you must provide a link to a new thread (or one that was previously created in the past) to produce your reasons as to not interrupt the purpose of this study.

Rule #2. I will put forth the chapters of where we are at in the Bible on our study, and nobody else. Please no random chapter studies. The purpose of this study is to stay on track with discussing the Bible in the order of how it is written. This is not a thread about the debate of the chronology of the Bible or about how you disagree with someone. This is a Bible Study thread which is supposed to help enrich your beliefs about God's Word.

Rule #3. Stay on point with only the current chapter or passage being currently discussed. No past chapter study discussions that are really old, and no future chapter study discussions. Please try and discuss only the current chapter study under discussion by me. Granted, I will allow a few comments after a story has just passed, but such discussion should not continue on and on so as to interrupt the current bible study discussion of where we are at in the Bible. If you want to add to a past Bible study discussion (that has been over for a long while), start another thread. The purpose is to stay on point with the current bible study so as to get through studying the whole Bible together.

Mat 1:15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
Mat 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ."

The Bible said:
"The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." (Matthew 1:1).

My Commentary:

Jesus is in the royal line of David, and of the father of the Jewish faith, Abraham.

The Bible said:
2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;" (Matthew 1:2-15).

Commentary:

Most do not know that the text of the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew is divisible by seven in a ton of different ways. To learn more about this, check out this video here by Chuck Missler:

Side Note: Please keep in mind that I do not agree with everything Chuck teaches; Especially his view in Eternal Security or Belief Alone-ism (For I believe the Bible teaches that a believer can fall away, and that they need works of faith after they are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ).

The Bible said:
"And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ." (Matthew 1:16).

My Commentary:

Joseph is the step father only of Jesus. Jesus did not have a human father and he was born by way of Mary while she was still a virgin. It was a miracle. Jesus coming into the world. He was a miracle in His coming to the Earth, and He would achieve a miracle at the end of His life by providing a way of salvation for mankind (with his death and resurrection).

Just a quick question. How much of the New Testament are you going to be putting up?

My attempt is to get through the whole New Testament (Lord willing). But I would desire to do this in the order of how our Bibles are arranged to keep things simple. Any edifying comments are welcome. If there is a disagreement between us, I propose that one of us leave a link to another thread so as to debate it elsewhere and not here.

Mat 1:17 "So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations."

The Bible said:
"So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations." (Matthew 1:17).

My Commentary:

It is interesting that there are three pairs of 14 here. The number 14 means deliverance or salvation in the Bible. The 14th was the day that the Israelites were delivered out of the slavery from Egypt.

"That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped." (Exodus 12:27).

" In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover."
(Leviticus 23:5).

Jesus is our Passover Lamb and deliverance who would take away the sins of the world.

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21).

The reason for the appearance of the "number 14" three times (as a part of Jesus's genealogy) is that one of the meanings for the number 3 is the resurrection. So Jesus's death as the Passover Lamb (The 14th of Nissan) would be repeated three times, a picture of the resurrection.

So this would be a picture of the gospel.

So the very line of Christ speaks of what Christ would do to save mankind.

Side Note:

Please keep in mind that I do not believe numbers should guide our life. I also do not believe numbers should be used to tell the future, either. Such things are of the occult. I believe the Bible tells us to count or to count numbers (within the Scriptures) as a part of wisdom (See Revelation 13:18, Ecclesiastes 7:25, and Ecclesiastes 7:27). Personally, I see Bible numbers primarily as a showing that God's Word (the Scriptures) is divine in origin.

It is one of the best, in my opinion, combining of the gospels.

It is not perfect, but it has the entire olivet discourse put together.

I also have the gospels interwoven book by Kermit Zarley.

This book actually gets rid of repeat stuff and it reads as one gospel story. It tries to integrate everything of the 4 gospels into one book.

I think each gospel has it's own unique flavor and theme.
Matthew was written for a Jewish audience who favored genealogies.
Matthew also was the gospel that focused on money the most, as well.
So it was speaking to the Jews and the problems that they had.
Matthew had a ton of OT references, so as to tie it to the Jew's promised Messiah (JESUS). It makes sense that Matthew is the first gospel in the order of our Bible. For Jesus came first for the Jews and then later for the Gentiles.

Hello Jason.
Thanks for those references.I just went to look at those online. I didn't realize there were so many of them.

I delve into the Greek a lot and do my own translation, so these might help.
Luke is my favorite Gospel [and the one I would translate if I had a choice], followed by John and of course I love the book of Acts!
Sorry to derail your thread. I can delete my posts if you request it.

Jason,

Why is Matthew's genealogy abridged, with missing names? I don't mean to discount Matthew, I believe it completely, but this has been something brought up many times in the past. I've heard answers, but they don't seem too satisfactory.

I love the gospel of John the best. For one, it is the gospel that focuses on the deity of Jesus Christ. Second, John is a straight shooter and he does not beat around the bush at what he is trying to say. So he is easy to understand. John was also one of the sons of thunder (i.e. a part of Jesus's core inner group of 3: Peter, James, and John). Matthew was a tax collector, and so it is probably why his gospel focuses on money more than any other gospel.

Jason,

Why is Matthew's genealogy abridged, with missing names? Why is David's name mentioned twice for the first two groups? I don't mean to discount Matthew, I believe it completely, but this has been something brought up many times in the past. I've heard answers, but they don't seem too satisfactory.

While I could be wrong, this sounds like a disagreement or debate rather than an honest question (Seeking to defend the Bible). While I do know much about the Bible, I do not know everything. For we know in part and we prophecy in part. I take it by faith that God did not make a mistake in preserving His Word on these particular points. Where humans may see error, it is only in the perception of their own mind and no actual errors truly exist in God's Holy Word. Anyways, if you disagree or want to debate further, I would ask you to start a thread on this topic, and simply post the link here if folks want to debate this particular issue. Currently, it's not my cup of tea at the moment.

May God bless you.

In good conscience, this was an honest question looking for a serious answer as someone concerned about a passage like this brought up by skeptics. This is suppose to be a exposition of the Scriptures, and I was just curious. If this one thing causes suspicion, then I'm out of here...

Sorry, for my suspicious nature. It's just I run into so many Christians over the years who are skeptical of what the Bible says. For many I have ran into think that it has errors within it (When I do not believe that).

As for an answer to your question:
Well, sorry, my friend; At the moment, I do not have an answer for this.

Blessings to you in the Lord.

I do not believe Matthew is erroneous, I am just trying to figure out how to answer this, especially to those who are Jewish who I have talked to. My guess, which may be wrong, is that "generation" must cover a span of time, rather than a strict single individual, and we read in the OT that some kings in Judah did not reign more than a year or several years, while others reigned for more than 20 years. I am wondering if these individuals make up what would have been fourteen generations.

I mean, if someone reigns 40 years, his son reigns 2 years, then his son reigns 40 years, can that be really called three generations? I don't know, but that was something I was thinking might be an answer to this abridgment of the genealogy.

Yes. I especially like the post Last Supper Garden discourse in John chapters 14,15,16,17.
The longest discourse by the Lord in the NT I think?

I did a thread on those chapters years ago and forgot all about it until we mentioned John.
Here is the link if you are interested. Please feel free to give your input on it.

John Chapts 14 thru 17 verse by verse

These chapts in John are the longest discourse by JESUS in the NT I believe and I thought it would be nice if I put this up
[and discontinue the thread I had on the whole NT verse by verse.]

I will be going by the main 3 greek texts, the W-H, T-R and Byz-Maj and the verses will be word for word as it appears in the texts which can be viewed here:

Greek New Testament - Parallel Greek New Testament by John Hurt

I will also highlight at least one word in each verse when relevant to show how often a certain word is used elsewhere.

I hope I can edify others here with this as much as I feel I will be edified, as I have always wanted to translate these particular Chapts in the NT.
Thoughts and comments are welcome. Thanks.

This may or may not help, but whenever I have run into conundrums or challenges in the Bible, I asked the Lord repeatedly for the answer. Sometimes the answer would come weeks later, and sometimes it would come months later, or even years. But I believed that God would answer me in His timing; And He does.

Here are some supposed contradictions God helped me to resolve over the years (If you are interested).

Hi there,

I notice in the NT Paul refers to Abraham as the father of all who have faith. This would include new covenant believers and not just Jews. Can you comment on this.

Blessings,

Carl Emerson.

I do have an answer for this, but I was hoping to save this comment for my commentary on the Old Testament (Genesis). I have a while to go before I get to that point.
