A Study of the Scriptures: The Psalms.

Warning: Please Read Thread Rules Below Before Posting.

Rule #1. This is not a debate thread; Nor is it an insult thread. This is a study thread. If you disagree with an interpretation or view expressed here, you can say how you disagree in one or two sentences, but you must provide a link to a new thread (or one that was previously created in the past) to produce your reasons as to not interrupt the purpose of this study.

Rule #2. I will put forth the chapters of where we are at in the Bible on our study, and nobody else. Please no random chapter studies. The purpose of this study is to stay on track with discussing the Bible in the order of how it is written. This is not a thread about the debate of the chronology of the Bible or about how you disagree with someone. This is a Bible Study thread which is supposed to help enrich your beliefs about God's Word.

Rule #3. Stay on point with only the current chapter or passage being currently discussed. No past chapter study discussions that are really old, and no future chapter study discussions. Please try and discuss only the current chapter study under discussion by me. Granted, I will allow a few comments after a story has just passed, but such discussion should not continue on and on so as to interrupt the current bible study discussion of where we are at in the Bible. If you want to add to a past Bible study discussion (that has been over for a long while), start another thread. The purpose is to stay on point with the current bible study so as to get through studying the whole Bible together.

Psa 1:1 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The Bible said:
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." (Psalms 1:1).

My Commentary:

Today, many walk in the counsel of the ungodly and stand in the way of sinners. We have to be light unto them. We have to be holy and separate from them and pray for them and do good towards them. We are blessed by God not to be under any teacher who counsels us in any kind of ungodly or sinful way. We are blessed by God if we are not standing in fellowship (standing in the way) with others who claim to be sinners and or who justify sin these days. We are blessed by God if we are not sitting in the seat of scornful men. We are not hanging out with those who wrongfully attack others and who judgment is two faced. They are not at peace and are scornful and hateful of others. But in the New Covenant, the Lord commands us to love even our enemies.

The Bible said:
"But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night." (Psalms 1:2).

My Commentary:

The Word of God is something that you put on the inside of you. You meditate or think about it all day and all night long. It is your bread or your food. Actually more precious than food. The Word of God is how we get our faith. A part of the faith includes commands or laws given to us by God. Under the New Covenant, we have a "law of the LORD." However, for us New Covenant believers, this is not the Law of Moses, but it is the commands that come from Jesus Christ and His followers from the pages of the New Testament. We are to delight in these laws (Which is contrary to many in the religious world today). Any time you mention "law" they scream legalism. But we delight or take enjoyment in the laws of the Lord because they express our love towards Jesus. For Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments.

The Bible said:
"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." (Psalms 1:3).

My Commentary:

A person who delights in the Law of the Lord will be planted like a tree by the river of water.

Revelation 22:14 says,
"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

Notice that they will bring forth fruit in due season. So sometimes immediate fruit is not noticeable right away when a person delights in the Law of the Lord. It takes time for us to mature and grow and learn so as to apply God's laws to our lives. In due season. The fruit will come. Everything we do as a part of God's kingdom will prosper. For our everything we do is for the Lord. For our prosperity is not in the things of this world or material wealth, but it is in the prosperity of righteousness or godliness.

Psa 1:4 "The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away."

The Bible said:
"The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away." (Psalms 1:4).

My Commentary:

Here we see that the ungodly (who are wicked men) are not like those in verse 3 who are:

(a) Like a tree planted by the rivers of water (i.e. Water = Scripture).
(b) Bring forth fruit (good deeds) in due season.
(c) His leaf shall not whither (sign of life of the tree or person).
(d) Whatever they do shall prosper. This is not their own self interests apart from God. Whatever they do in the Lord shall prosper and bear good fruit.

The wicked are like the chaff that blows away in the wind. To help illustrate this for you, check out the video on winnowing below (involving "chaff").

Anyways, the point here is that the wicked will be like "chaff" blown in the wind that will be remembered no more.

Psa 1:5 "Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous."

The Bible said:
"Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous." (Psalms 1:5).

My Commentary:

Wicked men will not be able to withstand or come out innocent in the final Judgment of GOD. They are not going to make it. Nor will sinners who have refused to live holy for the Lord in this life be able to stand in the congregation of the righteous saints, either. Many today think they can sin and still be saved by having a belief alone on Jesus. But Psalmist here is saying that sinners will not be able to even stand in the congregation of the righteous. They will be low to the ground. In the end, they will be humbled for their life of pride in sinning while on the Earth.

Psa 1:6 "For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."

The Bible said:
"For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish." (Psalms 1:6).

My Commentary:

This is talking about the future that the believer will have with God. "The way of the righteous" God knows their future paths and ways. But the ungodly this is not so. They have no future. They will perish.

"God's knows the way of the righteous"

This reminds me of the Last Supper scene from "Son of God."

Jesus says, "You know the way of where I am going."

One of His disciples replies, "How can we know the way of where you are going?"

Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
