Hi all, this is just a simple discussion where we can all share God's WORD together in a friendly manner.
The questions being posted for discussion here are;
1. What is sin?
2. What is rightouesness?
3. What is repentance?
4. What do we repent from?
5. Can we be saved while continuing in known unrepentant sin?
Our opinions matter little so please provide scriptures to support your views. Look forward to hearing from you all. I will link the questions above to the answers as we move through this thread for anyone interested in reading the answers to these questions above at a latter date.
For now what is your view on the above questions (scripture please)?
God bless.
My answers may not be what you want to hear, but God's Word tells us we must be born again of the SPIRIT. And those who are saved walk in the Spirit, not after the flesh. It goes much deeper than the old testament law you are looking for. It is now broken down to those who walk in the Spirit of Christ, or those who walk after the flesh. Saved vs. unsaved
Romans 8:1- There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
You believe it is following the ministry of death, engraved on stone. The New Covenant is the ministry of the Spirit.
1. What is sin?
It is missing the mark. In the case of Adam and Eve they missed the mark when they ate fruit from a forbidden tree. To fail to achieve the result that was intended by the will of the Father.
2. What is rightouesness?
It is the ongoing condition of obedience set forth by the will of the Father.
3. What is repentance?
To change one's mind and turn away from sin in order to stay the course and do the will of the Father.
4. What do we repent from?
SIN
5. Can we be saved while continuing in known unrepentant sin?
Not really. I am not one to judge however, based on scripture and my limited understanding this is where Christians begin to mix the meaning of repentance and forgiveness. They are not the same thing. God really wants us to walk in righteousness and that is not possible if your sin gets in the way.
I did already agree with you that we need to walk in God's SPIRIT to be RIGHTEOUS. What I asked you however from the OP you did not answer. I believe walking in God's SPIRIT leads to RIGHTOEUSNESS, but what is RIGHTOUESNESS accoding to God's WORD? Also, if someone is living a life of KNOWN UNREPENTANT SIN are they in a saved state before God or an unsaved state before God? As I posted earlier you do not have to answer the questions if you do not know what the answer is or you do not want to. It is up to you. Have a nice time swimming.
God bless.
As I said, if someone is walking in the Spirit they CANNOT walk in unrepentant sin. So therefore, if someone is walking in unrepentant sin, of course they are NOT SAVED and do not have the Spirit.
What do you think the mark is that we are to aim for but sometimes miss? Also are we accountable to God if something is sin but we do not yet know something is sin?
The mark is "The Fathers will". No we are not accountable for ignorance of sin however we are born with the natural instincts to define good and evil just as Noah was able to and the rest who were found righteous in the eyes of God.
What is sin is should possibly be the question as it is SIN that we are to repent from.
Hamartia is the New Testament word, in means 'missing the mark'. An archers term, if your a hunter and miss you go hungry, a soilder your enemy gets another chance to kill you. The isea is missing the mark which in the New Testament is called righteousness. Obviously fornication, murder, theft are all sins the grieve and offend God who is by nature, righteous, just and holy. Essentially sin is moral failure, lists of sins are common in the New Testament, often contrasted with the virtues of righteousness. Colosians 3:5-8 have such a list. It's conteasted with a list of virtues in Colossians 3:9-14.Hi all, this is just a simple discussion where we can all share God's WORD together in a friendly manner.

What is rightouesness?
A turning from our earthly nature, a process by which the sinner puts away the the offensive acts that grieve the heart of God. Jesus describes this process in the Beatitudes whereby the sinner becomes a discple in the Sermon on that Mount (Matt. 5). Paul also describes it at length in Romans 6.What is repentance?
First of all the thoughts and inclinations of the heart. Then there is whats referred to as taming the tongue (James 3:1-2). The list of things called sin could be extensive, but the earnest disciple first turns the heart fron sin to the things of God. This requires a miracle of courae, repentance like everything else in salvation, is a gift of God.What do we repent from?
Sadly yes, but it's a miserable existance for a believer who has wandered into one of those traps. It matters the nature of the sin, as well, but make no mistake, willfull sin is opposed to grace. Sure you can be saved, but it's as by fire (1 Cor. 3:15)Can we be saved while continuing in known unrepentant sin?

If the bible says to do it then you do it

It's the divine nature, communicated to us through the person and work of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. It's the God given ability to walk according to the will of the Father. The very first Psalm indicates is predicated on being focus on the Word of God, bearing the fruit of holiness.

Excellent questions, I hope I've contributed something that will move the conversation in a mutually edifying way.
Grace and peace,
Mark
I just posted this in another thread, but if opinions are not welcome you may ignore it.

1.
1 John 3:4 (NIV2011)
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
The question here is rather "what law?"
2. (opinion, can thus be ignored)
Righteousness is a measurement against a particular set of law, or a particular covenant. A covenant serves the purpose of identifying the righteous (saved) from the wicked (unsaved). So a new covenant needs to be in effect at the point that the previous covenant failed to serve this purpose. We all sinned in accordance to an older covenant applied to us. We however can be the righteous when measured against the New Covenant by accepting Jesus Christ to be our savior.
3. (opinion, can thus be ignored)
Repentance is the prerequisite of forgiveness. A woman has 10 sons. A killer killed her first son. Then he asked her for forgiveness while promising her that he's going to kill her second, third, fourth.....sons. Of course the woman refused. Is she not a forgiving woman in this case. The answer is no. It doesn't stand a case of forgiveness as long as the killer refuses to repent. Repentance here means to regret and to stop the crime deed.
4. (opinion, can thus be ignored)
Repent from our deeds which hurt the victims, or offended the law. In terms of God's Law and covenants, we offended God. We thus repent from our sins in order to be forgiven.
5. (opinion, can thus be ignored)
This is a complication. It is a yes and no, but more of a yes. Salvation in the end is by a subjective judgment carried out by Jesus Christ, as long as we are subject to a covenant (while each and every human is). We need to learn the correct way of dealing with our sins (that ties to the concept of holiness). In my link above, I actually listed a sin which each and every today's Christian may fail to deal with in his life time, before he's saved.
What if you have not been doing it to begin with?
The other thought is can we do it without God?
Notice how some churches insert themselves into that equation, a competitive free enterprise of man rather than of the Kingdom..We grow in the faith by relying more on the Lord and less on our selves.
