Does the LGBT etc. community want homosexuality remain a criminal offense?
My guess is that most LGBT members exist as individuals, and are sickened by these kind of people speaking on their behalf as if they are some kind of political community.

I don't agree with the author's sentiment in the article but he does give his reason: "Rodriguez claimed the Trump administration’s campaign to eradicate criminalization of homosexuality “looks more like another instance of the right using queer people as a pawn to amass power and enact its own agenda,” adding that the Trump administration does not have a great human rights record at home when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues.” I personally think that the author is right about Trump.

Here's some information that I have posted on this issue before in other threads.

Donald Trump Is the Most Anti-LGBT President in History

Sean Spicer's Book Reveals: Trump's LGBTQ+ Support Was a Total Lie

How Trump Made 2017 a Horrific Year for LGBT Rights—and Worse Is to Come

Trump promised to be LGBTQ-friendly. His first year in office proved it was a giant con.

Excerpt: Donald Trump Is the Most Anti-LGBT President in History

(1) Rescinding Obama-era guidance to protect the civil rights of transgender children in schools.

(2) Calling for (and still fighting to enact) a total ban on transgender service members in the armed forces – including kicking out existing trans people effectively and proudly serving their country.

(3) Rescinding Obama-era regulations that ban discrimination against LGBT people in a variety of arenas. Among them, rescinding an Obama-era policy that protects transgender workers, and reversing an Obama-era rule banning health care discrimination against transgender people.

(4) He instituted an extraordinary policy reversal, prioritizing the rights of people of faith over the rights of LGBT people.

(5) He rejected a rule proposed by the Obama administration requiring "that same-sex spouses are recognized and afforded equal rights in certain Medicare and Medicaid-participating facilities.

(6) He has placed a virulently anti-LGBT justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, and flooded the federal courts with equally (or worse) anti-LGBT judges.

(7) One Trump nominee for a lifetime position as a U.S. District Court judge proudly admitted he discriminates against gay people, because they're gay.

There are many more examples provided in the article.

Excerpt: Trump administration dismantles LGBT-friendly policies

Despite Trump’s promise to defend LGBT rights, his health agency has blocked efforts to combat discrimination. The nation's health department is taking steps to dismantle LGBT health initiatives, as political appointees have halted or rolled back regulations intended to protect LGBT workers and patients, removed LGBT-friendly language from documents and reassigned the senior adviser dedicated to LGBT health.

The sharp reversal from Obama-era policies carries implications for a population that's been historically vulnerable to discrimination in health care settings, say LGBT health advocates. A Health Affairs study last year found that many LGBT individuals have less access to care than heterosexuals; in a Harvard-Robert Wood Johnson-NPR survey one in six LGBT individuals reported experiencing discrimination from doctors or at a clinic.

The Trump administration soon after taking office also moved to change the agency's LGBT-related health data collection, a window into health status and discrimination. Last month it established a new religious liberty division to defend health workers who have religious objections to treating LGBT patients.

There are more examples provided in the article.

Not to be a jerk, but I'm pretty sure no politician or political party cares about a particular group of people unless/until they are politically important. You don't see quite the same effort by the US government to put pressure on governments around the world to end their domestic child labor practices because there's no conceivable way in which children form a cohesive voting block, since children can't vote. LGBTQ adults can vote in the USA, and what's more through their allies can and do have a political impact in the USA that far outweighs their actual numbers, so politicians have to care about them as a matter of political survival, no matter how sincere or insincere the politician's personal convictions on LGBTQ issues may be.

If LGBTQ stuff wasn't so much a part of the zeitgeist in the world of modern politics, I highly doubt we'd see many of the gains for this group that we've seen in recent years. Remember that very Democratic president Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act back in the oh-so-PC 1990s, and several high profile political figures after him such as President Obama and others had very public about faces on gay marriage once it became clear how that fight was likely to turn out. Times change, and when it comes to this particular issue, they tend to change very fast. It was only about 6-8 months ago that I first had to fill out paperwork at my new doctor's office that included "gender identity" questions (an entirely new section), which is another manifestation of this stuff. Those weren't there three or four years ago, when I became established with my previous doctor.

The point is, any politician who thinks they can ignore this stuff is just asking to lose, though the exact way that Trump is trying to do it (pick on Iran, be less than stellar at home) obviously has way more to do with domestic (US) politics and what he thinks his base is willing to put up with than anything else, I'm sure.

I am amazed at the number of people there are that read minds. It is Astonishing. Or perhaps I am just handicapped in that area much like a blind person in a room full of people talking about what they see.

The op-ed points out that President Trump didn't seem to care about LGBT issues until he could use it as a weapon against Iran. It's a fair criticism.
Yes, that is the propaganda point for sure.
Donald Trump is the first president to win election being in favor of gay marriage.

Quite frankly, that doesn't matter because it was already the law of the land when he was elected. And I wouldn't be surprised if both the judges he appointed want that to change. Every other action he's taken that has effected LGBT people, that impact has been a negative one. He only cares as much as it's a wedge issue.

Well, I guess I will just drop the issue then, if all it is is just more tawdry politics.
Nobody much cares anyway.

As it turns out, Trump isn't actually coming to the rescue of LGBT in other countries. You would think that he would be aware of his own administration trying to decriminalize homosexuality.

President Trump drew a blank Wednesday when told about his own administration's push to legalize homosexuality across the globe.

A reporter asked Trump in the Oval Office about "your push to decriminalize homosexuality around the world," asking, "Are you doing that and why?"

Trump said, however, "I don't know which report you're talking about. We have many reports."
