I haven't heard that particular story but I'd imagine similar situations probably happen somewhere in the world, everyday.
13 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. Matthew 7:13-14(NLT)

I am sure that it has happened at some point, but it is just a story that people tell to get a point across; essentially it is a parable of sorts. There is certainly no reason that it could not happen, but it has not happened personally to most of the people retelling the story, they are simply telling it again to relate a possibility, the "what would happen if you die tonight?" possibility.
