Chicago has a longstanding issue with construction projects and diversity. I'd be surprised if 10% of all hires are minorities and I'm being generous. The $1 lots are usually given to projects that reinvest in the community. Like urban farms.

Good, people shouldn't be messing with Chicago parks. We like them just the way they are.
tulc(maybe they can take down Trump Tower and make the library there instead?)

Absolutely not. It's a peaceful neighborhood and there's enough congestion already. And it wouldn't fit in. That's a shopping district.

tulc(honestly doesn't see it)

Last summer I was in DC, and the line to see Obama's portrait was out the door. If the library attracts lines like that during peak season, it will be an economic boon to the city. At the same time, it will definitely drive displacement. Most of the residents of the neighborhood rent. I can definitely see why they are concerned about being priced out.

I wonder how many lawsuits are going to come out to try and stop Trump's future presidential library from being built.

The Trump Wall streaming 4 years of tweets will suffice.

They're talking about building it not far from Science and Industry. It's already a nightmare trying to find parking in that area.
tulc(knows it's close to where President Obama taught but still, there's a lot already in that area) :sigh:
Maybe he can have it built here in LA instead? We just recently dedicated a stretch of freeway to President Obama near Occidental College where he attended.

Sign installed renaming section of 134 Freeway after Obama

You are talking about an atypical neighborhood. Its commercialization and convenience are its appeal and reason for the traffic issues. Most visitors won't arrive on foot. It's not a good spot. I live in the area. More importantly, his connection to the south side is well established. If he put the library elsewhere they'd complain.

Redevelopment is taking place in the southern part of the city. I'm uncertain if its reached that area yet but I'm aware other neighborhoods are being revived. I expect the demographic will change in time.

Certainly it will. But that doesn't mean everybody will like it. There's always winners and losers when it comes to urban redevelopment.

I would not expect an area within the proximity of the lakefront and a 9-hole golf course to remain as is. It's an affordable alternative to residences the same distance in the opposite direction.

That's easy to say. It's harder to accept when you are the one being forced to move out of your home and neighborhood. Especially if you have lived there many years and it has become part of your identity.

Woodlawn, for instance, is the neighborhood directly south of Washington Park where the library is to be built. In this neighborhood, almost 80% of households rent. It is highly likely that a significant percentage of those households will be forced to move when rents increase.

There is a long history of racial and class divisions in the area, which have contributed to disproportionate economic rewards being reaped by some while others get left behind. Those who stand to lose out have good reason to be fearful.

One can argue that gentrification and displacement are inevitable, but transformations need to be handled ethically and with care for the people who will be affected.
