Hey all, I know that most Orthodox are not anti-vaccine and that the Russian Church even endorses it. However, the Romanians have a pretty strong anti-vaccine contingent and individual Orthodox, for reason of conscience and science, also oppose vaccines. I don't want this thread to be a debate about the merits of vaccines, but rather, if there are any known Orthodox resources in the English language (or translated) with a theological rationale against the practice. Most devise their own, but I wanted not to lean onto my own understanding so much.

Many thanks and God bless

I believe this thread should be in St. Justin Martyr Forum.

Against moving:
1) It ain't theological in nature
2) It would give it much more legitimacy, than it deserves

For moviong:
It would be MUCH easier to ignore, hidden up there

If the government requires our children to be vaccinated, and if there is any truth behind the conspiracy theories, then I trust that God can heal any adverse effects that may arise from those vaccines. After all, God has enabled many barren women to bear children.
Have faith in God and do not worry about the evil in the world. It cannot touch us if we are in Christ.

Best is to wait as much as possible before vaccinating your child. If they recommend at 6 months wait 1 year etc.

Places like Greece, Romania, and other Balkan countries readily believe in MANY conspiracy theories. Some of them are actually quite funny such as Greeks who've told me as they were enjoying an ice cold coca cola, that the reason coca cola is the #1 selling soda is because they never took the cocaine out of it, and the real reason they still keep the recipe a secret.

Vaccines aren't big money, they're generic, they have to be encouraged to make them.

Anyway, there are a fair number of conspiracy theorists and wherever there's some new science there is some religious reactionary objecting , but no serious theological objections. I'm sure if you look you can find some people objecting much as people in the West objected to smallpox vaccination in its early years - some of those same arguments are still being used today in similar Protestant circles. As with creationist arguments, some might have bled over.

Anyway, there is no scientific or religious reason to object to vaccination but if you wish to object on scientific grounds, you can at least make that argument if you bring the facts. There simply aren't any (Orthodox) religious grounds to object.

I think its noteworthy some of the people I know of who are anti-vax generally aren't religious. I think its like what was once said, when you stop believing in God you will believe in anything.

I think there are some which use tissue from aborted babies, which would be the only ones that could cause a theological issue. and I am not even sure how common that is.

but really, aside from that, I don't think there would be any real theological problem.

A bit OT, but if I had to guess the issues we're seeing are coming from our food source(s). In particular the increase in hormones, pesticides, and GMOs. No proof of that, but you are right in that there seem to be higher occurrences of autism diagnoses these days. Then again it could be other factors such as being reported on more, or more understanding of what constitutes autism. Regardless it would make for an interesting study, and read.
I have been wondering for years at the increases in cancer, as well as many other diagnoses - including autism.

Food sources/diet can probably account for some. Though in some ways diet is improving, in some ways getting worse. Certainly environmental contaminants of different kinds are increasing (though some may be decreasing). Diagnostics are improving. People may be living longer and/or not dying from other things, so more increase in what we can't control. Such a complex question, especially when considering more than one issue.

I do find it sad that we can polarize about it though.

I think the biggest "unknowable" cause were all the nuclear bomb tests in the 40s-60s. I mean, every ounce of water on earth was contaminated with radioactive material. So, the results of them would be universal.

Let's put it this way. Even though there is 0 proof that vaccines cause autism and no moral case against vaccines, let's pretend they do cause autism. What would you prefer, more autistic children or more dead children? If you visit old graveyards, you'll probably see a lot of tombstones with people who didn't make it to the age of 10.

Here's one sombering example:

Lessons from a Kansas graveyard: What a 1903 outbreak of diphtheria can teach us today

Had those people been born 20 years later when the diphtheria vaccine was invented, they probably would have lived a lot longer.
