YouTube 'helps convince flat earth belief'

" 'Believing the Earth is flat is of itself is not necessarily harmful, but it comes packaged with a distrust in institutions and authority more generally,' she added.

The study involved interviews with 30 attendees at two conferences.

Questioning revealed YouTube had suggested the flat earth videos after attendees had watched other clips at home about conspiracy theories.

Some said they only watched the videos to criticise them but were won over by the arguments being advanced. The results from Prof Landrum's study were presented at the annual meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Science this weekend."

I find it strange that people are more interested in the distrust in authority and institutions than the belief.

The Bible convinced me that science is lying about the earth, that the earth is not a spinning ball of water moving around the sun.
The description of God's creation given by the Bible is nothing like what science is saying.

I will add, i all ways believed that Adam and Eve were and how God began humanity and that they are literal people and that God created heaven and earth. So when i learned that the Bible also in a literal description described a different creation than what the men of science are teaching.
I could not accept parts/areas of the Bible (adam, eve) that goes against science and reject other areas of the Bible that also go against science.

The distrust of authority is a large part of the appeal of conspiracy subculture. Basically it's "those in power tried to keep me dumb, but now I'm woke and too smart for them".

I'm not going to take issue with your particular interpretation of the Bible, that's your own business and is not the topic of the thread.

But I am surprised by the casual manner in which you glibly claim "science is lying".

Do you really think that's it's feasible that that is the case? Have you pondered how many people from how many industries this would involve? It's not just a few eggheads in their ivory towers, it would include everyone involved in global transportation, travel, meteorology, geological surveys, the military, the space industry, every government etc, etc going back hundreds of years. It would also include every layman with a basic understanding of geography, cartography, astronomy, physics etc, etc, etc.

I don't understand how you can believe such a thing is possible.

Yes, but is that really driving the flat earth belief? The question is who benefits? Cui bono? Why is this specific belief convincing people? Because a round earth seems counter-intuitive without the substructure of standard physics? Maybe undercutting physical science at the root, helps discredit other ideas at the branch - like global warming or such?

Just being 'woke' seems a weak explanation for the power of the idea to take such root. Perhaps this is a delayed revolt against the odd reasoning of Relativity and Quantum theory, that the older physics gets tarred with the same brush? I don't think distrust of authority is itself a bad thing, within bounds. It is through being sceptical and investigating claims made yourself, that you become educated. Just like you can't trust every study or finding, things need to be tested, and for many they find alternate models more convincing than the standard one. As the article notes, many started out to debunk it and oddly became convinced.

I have seen examples of their lies.

ISS 250+ miles in the sky then why are they about the same height as the red bull jumper, the red bull jumper may even be higher.

And this fake photo showing the earth and moon by china. Are just some of the reasons.

Interesting. You claim the Bible convinced you yet your verbiage is exactly the same as someone who watched a lot of YouTube videos.

You can see the ISS.

You don’t have to take anyone word for it - you can take a telescope, look up at the right time, and SEE IT WITH YOUR OWN EYES.

It’s up there. It’s real. It’s where it’s supposed to be. It wasn’t up there before it was supposed to be up there. It’s a real thing in real space.

Join us back in reality. We miss you.

I wouldn't consider photos to be strong evidence one way or the other, lens' can play optical tricks and neither of us know exactly what equipment was purported to have been used. Even if they were faked so what? They do nothing to change the fact that the geography of a flat earth is completely untenable under the most cursory examination.

Do you also accuse these people of lying to promote your completely pointless conspiracy?

Don't discount the appeal of being "in on it". There's also a sense of having power over those who "rule the world" by knowing the secret they keep hidden from all of us.

I never said there is not something that NASA is calling the ISS. I am saying that it is not 250+ miles high in the sky and it is not traveling at 17,000 miles hr.

I can see that when i watch, the plane or what ever that is up in the sky go like the height that object is no where near moving the speed of 17,000

How does a plane travel at the speed it would need to be travelling (it would still be 1000+ mph) not cause a sonic boom? Why does every terrestrial photo of the ISS look exactly like the ISS and not like a plane?

It’s not a plane. There’s no way a plane - or anything that requires fuel - could stay up there as long as it does.

And if you look at it, it’s not shaped like a plane, it’s shaped like what it’s supposed to be: a space station. It moves too fast to be plane, as well. If you do the math, it all adds up.

If it’s not a space station, what is it? How is it staying up there and moving the way it does?

Flat earth theory is a tool of the enemy, nothing more. There are many levels to this psyop. It teaches people to bypass logic and reason, and focus on the senses (Epistemology). YouTube has dozens of LIVE Flat Earth videos going at any one time and holds thousands upon thousands of videos by PAID shills (government sponsored actors) to take part in this brainwashing campaign. I have no any issues opposing authority when they don't have our best interest.
One of the biggest reason for this psyop is to make anyone that opposes the government's lies look like a "Flat Earther" and to discount them as a nutcase.

As USincognito pointed out,

"There's also a sense of having power over those who "rule the world" by knowing the secret they keep hidden from all of us."

I would consider Christians at high risk for this manipulation because we already have a certain trust which defies the scientific world. It's very sad to see Christians taking up their free time on this matter rather than improving their walk with God. There are pastors on YouTube making the flat earth topic their main focus, spending countless hours trying to prove the earth is flat through bible passages. Tell me how spending any time at all on this subject is going to improve our walk with God?

Christians spend time on this because the truth matters and it leads to things like this:

and this:

Flat Earth Testimonies

Flat Earth is bearing fruit, not just causing great irrational anger in both 'Christian' and non-Christian communities. It is a bit disheartening when Christians write it off as some psyop without real investigation in the matter. I expect that from those also living under the evolutionary deception, but not so much from those claiming to already know the truth in that matter as well.

The truth is, the earth is flat, and all the pretend motives assigned to people realize that fact are part of the real psyop, if there is one. This is the farthest thing from a stand of arrogance. For many of us, it's knowledge that on some levels, we wish we didn't have and were still under the 'safe' delusion. But things are what they are and we aren't going away, ever.
