Today I'm back to doing eye of rounds and two can's of dog food :D
WELL? They look the same!

I put Cs and Ss on the dog food, to keep them separate for bagging rofl (chicken, salmon).
Once I open a bag I would know anyway, the dog food crumbles, the eye of round stays in a disk shape :D

I think all will be eaten on the next trip this weekend yum.

Ok I shut the apples down this morning... 40 hours? I set them out in air for a few minutes to see what they would do, hoping like with the bananas they would crisp up.

Well half crisped and half began to absorb moisture. I bagged them up... looked for a desiccating bag but didn't find one. :( I'll eat these as snacks on my trip to Disney this next weekend. ;)
Too thick maybe DrJean?
We did some crushed tomatoes and cucumber over the weekend.

We currently do not have a dog... but I have plans. A little lap beagle!
Should be thinking of how we would feed him. After a stuff hits the fan event we will get chickens and rabbits. There will be some good stuff there for him. They like eggs if I recall.

I had a beagle for a very short time (sad story of another's incompetence).... they are hunters and howlers you know? NOT a good choice for being stealth btw (or even in a campsite ) rofl.

I had a chance to try out my kale chips... was eager to munch while at Disney camp... YUK! They were like trying to eat crepe paper weeds! Not the crispy chip that went into the bag...yet the seal was tight and no air had gone into the bag. I spit it all out--twice. And I just now tried again, thinking maybe...you know...it was just me? UGH no they are horrible! :(

My dog loves hardboiled eggs. But then, he also likes whipped cream lol (put whip cream onto his dog food chips lol)

I would advise that you work at not letting the future dog see the association of food chicken/eggs and the live birds and nests. Believe me, you have to train them to leave the latter alone!

A KEY to enjoying dehydrated foods (especially snacks) is to drink water first, and after. Coffee in the middle WITH is great imo! Otherwise you might, as I find myself doing, eat "a whole (dehydrated) can of fruit, or 2 whole (dehydrated) chickens! Mindless snacking is not conducive to the psyche nor the body!

Had to begin eating the protein I dehydrated in the last 3 months... and dehydrated some more (eye of the round). It's one of the few things I can count on my dog ALWAYS eating. He's picky and doesn't want the same thing 2 meals in a row--unless it's this.

My assistant took inventory of all the dehydrated food I have :D
And I ventured south to almost the Everglades to an awesome local grown fruit/veggie stand and bought and bought... so I am dehydrating fresh avocado(Donny version, not the dark little bits of fake fruit lol) and cukes and watermelon and mango (Keitt)...(gave the coconut to my assistant)...and tomatoes and persian limes and and and :D

Sure hope this isn't needed for the storm brewing in the lower islands. :O

I had bought excessive amounts of tropical fruits to take on my trip, which would have included a stop over at a relative's house in GA... so I gave most of it to my assistant but now...

the avocado and cukes are done...and the watermelon is in the works. Since that is mostly water, I cut 1/4 almost thick slices and it will take longer ... but yum will be sweet treats :)

At this point in time I heartily recommend the eye of the round (angus) and the boneless chicken breasts (from Purdue) as 'staples'.

While some markets will sell the eye of the round in large ovals (well, about 2 silver dollars size) 'thin sliced' I prefer to find the whole roast and cut the slices even thinner.

The chicken cut into 'slivers' of 1/4" by 2-4" long are terrific!

Both dehydrate 'quickly' compared, of course, to fruits but also to other cuts of meat...and are great as snacks or main meal elements. (Remember I cook everything before dehydrating---no raw meats nor eggs for me)

As for fruits...

the bananas never do really become crispy so it's a take your time fruit to eat... slices that absorb your saliva and become almost palatable (but they are sweet!) But then, I never liked fruit roll ups either. The apple and pear slices are great! Mango takes a long time as does watermelon (hello what 90% water???) But are enjoyable.

My favorite is chopped broccoli! Though not sweet, dries so fast and crumbles like a leafy spice to sprinkle onto a dish. Nice. Squash, for me, is also good. If I buy the cooked pureed butternut, they come out translucent and thin... but what a way to eat healthy food!

The double zip dehydrator bags I'm using are reusable...with some caveats imo.

If what is going into the bag is not smooth (like banana slices, rounded etc) then double bag. Use a regular zip lock first, or some similar thickness bag which does not seal...allow both to be de-aired. This will keep the reusable bag from becoming 'dented'.

Once empty and going to be reused, do not wash out with soap & water! Well, you can but they take forever to dry, even opened, upside down etc... and if you have more than one... yikes! where do you dry them?
Wipe them out with dry cloth or paper towel... then wipe with a germ killing towelette ... and then a water-wetted cloth then dry with a dry cloth. Just my POV.

I have begun rotating the dehydrated foods from last August.... and making fresh. The meats especially.

I think I mentioned I found FLASH FROZEN dog food/pure chicken or beef in small packages for $12 but when considering how many pounds of meat is there (based upon my dehydrating ratios) it is worth it. PLUS there are NO expirations dates.

Anyway... I had put some au jus on my dog's food and it gave him the scoots. :( I knew better. I know better. His system cannot handle wet foods. It would have taken time to make rice soooooooo I pulled a packet of dehydrated rice I had done in August. (Veggies last 'forever' btw..but this was necessary.) AND IT WAS GREAT! It took 20 minutes to be 'dog ready' but I went ahead and soaked it for 30 minutes and then it was also good for human consumption. The dog spit out the few green beans I had mixed in..but then, so would I have bc I can no longer handle anything in that family.

ANYWHO this will be a great foundation for him at times... very easy to fix... amount of water you would use to first make the rice might be too much so I went 1 - 1. He of course didn't need it heated but I was able to anyway and added butter (who doesn't love butter)...

God is good!

The local BIG chain franchise grocery quit selling Perdue chicken breasts and have filled ALL the coffers with turkeys. I can't eat turkey to begin with.... even the heartland perdue chicken (boxes of filets) are held back now.... But I did find "fresh" Perdue tenders... and they are going to be even easier to dehydrate as they are already in strips...just cut them in 3rds or so I think?

I am unhappy with the suction bags. The vacuum sucks fine, the bags don't suck good. They aren't the mylar and quite frankly I haven't even looked for mylar. I've been putting the dehydrator's brand bags into lock and locks... and the ones I use during the week to eat I've put inside the empty dog treat mylar bags ROFL... but the inside bags do not keep suction. :( WHile I'm at the house that's just a bother but once I'm on the road for a month or more I don't want to be having to be thinking about charging up the vacuum just to keep the doggone bags vacuumed.

Moving right along...

Using Perdue thin sliced chicken breasts to dehydrate today...to restock. The filets were easy to cut for the dehydrator using my ULU. I always cook everything before I dehydrate, remember. Most of the thin slices I cut into strips 1/4" wide and however long they would go. One tray I just put the whole thin slices of breast (shaped like a chicken breast but only about 1/5" thick). I'll see if there's any difference. I do the eye of the round this way, whole thin slices and they are easy and good to eat (dog approved too)!
The ULU Factory ULU 3b383ae291419bdc3e9945a73a9c918c.image.200x167.jpg I recommend a rounded handle btw. It' called a rocker knife for us south of Alaska...and is wonderful for long haul cutting or for those with hand strength/flexibility issues.

Okay! The chicken is done.
the strips took about 5 1/2 hours (from previously cooked to dehydrated). I forgot I had to take them out and let them sit just a few minutes to be sure... they can feel soft while hot...but harden up once out ..when they are done.
The thin fillets, as bought, took much longer (12 hours) and I'm not happy with the result. They will not work for just snacking...and will have to be reconstituted to eat. But then, they will help pretend I'm eating a real dinner then :D.

I did 3 cans of dog food... the can of chicken I cut the slices in halves. The beef cans (2) I left full slices. Halves dried faster, of course. But really, still not all day.

HEY FOLKS!

Got updates on this dehydrating food stuff process :D

I found that the dog doesn't like the Perdue chicken tenders...and in fact, barfs them up quickly. So I decided they must have a stronger brine in them and washed the strips first. No, not washed as in what I do with dishes nor even what I do with veggies and fruit (those that lend themselves to an apple cider vinegar wash)... but in filtered water to remove the saltiness? I can't taste so I assumed this was the issue. He ate the washed chicken 2 days later without issues.

I have also quit dehydrating the angus eye of the round because I have plenty for me... and it's too high in fat for the dog's digestive tract. He can't eat angus beef. SOOOOOOOooooo I moved on to the 925 lean natural ground beef.... I rolled them into small balls (slightly larger than a shooter marble), microwaved them on high for 3 minutes to cook, and then put them into the dehydrator. I will see how long they take (I did one tray the other day but forgot.) There are about 60 of these size 'meat balls' to 2 lbs of ground beef.

I enjoyed doing the cubed butternut squash. Bought many bags and did them since they are not always in season, in the market, even though they are frozen in bags.

The frozen cut carrots (the squiggly line cut) in bags are also convenient. Organic was available. I did a package of these when I did several packages of the butternut squash.

I'll try to upload the picture of sizes. LOL talk about space saving! I think I did 48 oz of squash and they all fit into one 18 oz mylar bag once dehydrated. The tiny-ness of the carrots is why they always mix them into other veggie packets. In the spoon picture, the carrot slice is on the left, the 1/2" cubed squash is on the right in the spoon picture. It took 7 hours for the veggies.

The tray shows the meat balls ready to dehydrate.

Thanks!
The dog is enjoying the chips of previously canned dog food as treats... IDK if I should keep to the 3 months expiry like with people meat or not ..no wait I don't eat people as some have been found to do... I mean meat for people has a 3 month expiry unlike veggies and fruits that last "forever". :D

I've been dehydrating more organic non-gmo brown rice. It's a staple for the dog's food (base). It dries up so small it's a joy :D hehehe

I crock pot it. It's a one one-half quart crock pot that only runs 100w NICE and I 'm trying to not let it get broken bc that will run on my van if I want it (though I have a 1 cup Dash 20 minute rice cooker on the van)

ANY way... once you have the rice cooked... cool it. My assistant says to hit it with cold water to break any clumps apart but I haven't tried that. ( I do recall hitting camp coffee with cold water to make the grounds that have risen to the top fall to the bottom :D.. .real camp coffee!)...

I put the cooked rice into the refrigerator for now... and then they break apart very easily for dehydrating!

Place the cooked rice onto the 'fruit roll up' plastic trays for dehydrating. I find I can put 3 cups per tray onto mine.

You Can put the freshly cooked rice onto trays but they need help in the process to declump...some will burn almost... with gooey in center etc.. takes many more hours to dry this way.

After drying, totally declump the rice into grains again and bag/label.

Think about the type of water you use to make rice. Spring water is best. Even bottled spring water (genuine).

Don't use (nor drink ) purified or other bottled water.... nor tap water if it comes from the city..probably has purification chemicals and fluoride too!
