The wife of White House communications chief Bill Shine said Wednesday that childhood diseases such as measles "keep you healthy & fight cancer."
In a series of tweets echoing anti-vaccination views she's espoused publicly for years, Darla Shine lamented the fact her children had received the MMR vaccine, which guards against measles, mumps and rubella. She added that people of her generation -- the Baby Boomers -- were healthier now because they had measles as children.

Well, yes we are a healthier bunch in that respect. You see, the kids who were very vulnerable to measles in those days are dead. Natural selection, don't ya know?

partial-deaths.jpg

"The entire Baby Boom population alive today had the #Measles as kids," Shine tweeted later.

So did a lot of those who aren't alive today. See the graph.

Darla Shine's comments come as a measles outbreak sweeps across the country, disproportionally affecting those who were not vaccinated against the disease. Shine dismissed the reports as "#Fake #Hysteria."
As of February 7, more than 100 cases of measles had been diagnosed this year in 10 states, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Washington state is facing a massive outbreak that is mostly affecting children who did not receive vaccines against the disease. On Wednesday, officials reported 53 cases of measles in just one county, Clark.

Measles is one of the leading causes of death for children, according to the World Health Organization.

Not to mention miscarriages, stillbirths, and birth defects in children who's mothers contracted Rubella/German measles while pregnant.

Well, children living in UNDEVELOPED countries. You can't just leave that part out.

Worldwide, measles is one of the leading causes of death in children living in undeveloped countries. Can Measles Cause Injury and Death - National Vaccine Information Center

I take no position on this, except one of choice. Do what you should do, and make those decisions in conjunction with your doctor. She is correct, however, that the baby boom generation does have lifelong immunity, something that the vaccine does not provide.

Measles causes tragic childhood deafness and blindness. Anyone who promotes the idea that it could be anything but a scourge has blood on their hands.

Yes, that has happened. It is not automatic, as your sentence suggests, but it is a rare complication.

It's not the worst. A few people who get measles as children will be afflicted years later by an incurable encephlitis which eventually destroys the brain.

And the recent outbreaks are the work of those vaccine opponents, who have now convinced enough parents to make it a public health crisis.

Those who didn't die of the primary disease or consequent encephalitis. Natural selection does work, but I don't think it's a great public health strategy.

It is my understanding that there are a small number of children that doctors have decided should not receive some vaccines. Their system cannot handle it. This is where the notion of "choice" falls apart. As long as the few people who have medical reasons for not being vaccinated are surrounded by people who are vaccinated, their risk is negligible. However, if large numbers of people aren't vaccinated, these exceptional people are at high risk.

I'm sure a doctor could do a better job of explaining this. I have seen this point made on the news.

Yes. When I was in the service, I was in charge of an Allergy/Immunology clinic. The issue is that live virus vaccines (like measles, which has an attenuated virus unable to cause disease in a person with an intact immune system) can be harmful to those with badly impaired immunity. Examples would be people taking drugs that reduce immune response, those taking chemotherapy or radiation treatments, and so on.

This is where the notion of "choice" falls apart. As long as the few people who have medical reasons for not being vaccinated are surrounded by people who are vaccinated, their risk is negligible. However, if large numbers of people aren't vaccinated, these exceptional people are at high risk.

Right. This "herd immunity" protects people who are unable to take the vaccine. If everyone around them has been vaccinated, they are essentially protected. It's notable that pregnant women have a much higher likelihood of their child having severe birth defects if they are infected with Rubella (the "R" in the "MMR" vaccination).

I'm sure a doctor could do a better job of explaining this. I have seen this point made on the news.

You pretty well nailed it.

I'm OK with people with legitimate medical reasons to forgo vaccination, to do so. But parents should not be the ones to make that decision.

We are alive now. ?? We are talking about now.

And most people lived through measles, neither dying of measles or encephalitis. The list of side effects you hear every day for the new drug of the week on commercials is worse than the outcome of virtually all measles cases.

Since you want to talk about before:
Before the vaccine, nearly everyone in the United States got measles. There were roughly 3 million to 4 million cases each year, and an average of 450 measles-associated deaths reported annually between 1953 and 1963.

Before the age of vaccination

So in the U.S., 0.00000129 percent of those with measles died.

I'm just not an alarmist about this stuff, having lived through the era when everyone had it.

Recent outbreaks are caused by people from somewhere having and exposing others to measles. They aren't caused by the existence of people who have not had the vaccine.

In my jurisdiction, it was required to demonstrate vaccination status for Rubella to obtain a wedding license. Perhaps they have changed all that. Of course, most people just shack up today, so maybe that is no longer any help.

If I may ask, where was this?

Those are people who haven't had the vaccine. Generally people visiting from elsewhere, who then infect people who have not been immunized here. If a high percentage of kids have been immunized, the disease can't spread.

We're seeing outbreaks now, because of the anti-vaccine stories.

It is my understanding that Washington State is having a major outbreak among children precisely because many of them have not had the vaccine. Obviously, the germ came from somewhere but it can spread easily when conditions are right.

That seems like a lot of people being killed unnecessarily.

Yeah....0.00000129 percent of measles cases, which you cut off from the quote of how many have died. 450 out of millions.

Meanwhile, from the vaccine, as reported to the vaccine court below: 457 deaths, also killed unnecessarily.

Pick your poison, I guess, in conjunction with your own doctor.

Measles Quick Facts - Diseases and Vaccines - NVIC

  • Mild side effects such as redness, rash or pain where the shot was given, along with fever and swelling of the glands in the neck or cheeks have been reported following MMR or MMR-V vaccination. More serious side effects that have occurred following vaccination include seizures, thrombocytopenia, pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis, full body rash, brain damage, permanent loss of hearing, coma, and death.

  • As of November 30, 2018, there have been more than 92,844 reports of measles vaccine reactions, hospitalizations, injuries and deaths following measles vaccinations made to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), including 457 related deaths, 6,902 hospitalizations, and 1,736 related disabilities. Over 50% of those adverse events occurred in children three years old and under.

60 cases, some among vaccinated people, most not.
