Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader McConnell announced the Senate would be voting on the Green New Deal introduced by freshman Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez.

Mary covered the “bill” in detail here.

And giddy McConnell is. Check out that little smirk at the end of the clip.
McConnell to Bring Green New Deal Up for a Vote

The bill reads like a kindergartener’s wish list for saving the world. From eliminating cow farts to remodeling every.single.building.in.the.US to helping all the poor people with magical money that doesn’t exist, getting Democrats on record supporting this piece of garbage is the absolute right thing to do.

When it was introduced last week, Democrat presidential contenders couldn’t jump on the bandwagon fast enough. A move we predicted will explode in the most glorious of fashions come election crunch time.

This is going to be fun...…..

That's out of character for Mitch -- usually he bends over backwards to block voting... now he's pushing for the Senate to vote on a bill introduced in the House...

It's an easy play--the bill won't pass, and he gets credit for bipartisanship.
But this is how the sausage is made: put forth a bill that will be debated, modified, reworked, negotiated, passed BACK to the House in modified form, reconciled (or not, Bill tabled, dies), sent back to Senate and thence to POTUS.
This used to be called “normal”.

Not really, because he tried to do the same thing for M4A. Nobody bit.

He's hoping to trap Democrats with this vote by bringing forward a straw man bill that has little or no bearing on what the GND actually says. Either they don't vote for it, and he can say "well, we tried to get this passed, but they didn't think it was a priority", or they do vote for it and they have Dems on record voting for things they can use against them.

Fortunately, I think this Freshman class is smart enough to see it for what it is.

Mitch is doing this to embarrass Democrats, no question about that. Every single thing Mitch does is for political advantage. I give him credit for his ability to play the game, but I do think that he is bad for the United States overall.

Were I advising the Democrats, I'd tell them to vote present.

I agree with your assessment in the post above.

During the Kavanaugh stuff, someone (I don't remember who) called Mitch "the gravedigger of democracy". I hope that's a nickname that clings to him.

The Green New Deal was a Simple House Resolution.
I presume that's why the word "bill" is in quotes above.

H.Res. 109 is a simple resolution in the United States Congress.
A simple resolution is used for matters that affect just one chamber of Congress, often to change the rules of the chamber to set the manner of debate for a related bill. It must be agreed to in the chamber in which it was introduced.
It is not voted on in the other chamber and does not have the force of law.

How is McConnell going to introduce it in the Senate?

Oops. Not that I expect accuracy from legal insurrection dot com, but it's a resolution, not a bill, and there's no mention of cow farts in the resolution.

Hey civilwarbuff
Long time no see.

It’s a socialist dream vehicle to totally reconstruct America. Wipe out America, it’s culture as we know it and rebuild a socialist society with “massive government intervention”.
Obviously top dems prefer to distance themselves as Pelosi dodged the idea calling it a “green dream” saying she hadn’t read it.
It’s also why Trump said at the SOTU, “Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a Socialist country,”.

Amen to that.

So you believe that, buried inside this bill, is something that the Senate is likely to approve?

It's not a bill and someone would have to introduce the language as a Senate resolution for it to be voted on.

The Socialism boogie man meme is rooted deeper than a tick I see.

NPR host Steve Inskeep:
Inskeep asked. “Are you prepared to put on that table that, ‘Yes actually they’re right, what this requires is massive government intervention?'”
Ocasio-Cortez responded, “It does, it does, yeah, I have no problem saying that.

Ocasio-Cortez:
And so I do think that right now we have this no-holds-barred, Wild West hyper-capitalism. What that means is profit at any cost. Capitalism has not always existed in the world, and it will not always exist in the world. When this country started, we were not a capitalist [nation], we did not operate on a capitalist economy.

---------------------

She's correct. When this nation first started it was a socialist endeavor. Lookup the Plymouth Plantation, under William Bradford and the famine of 1621.
It didn't work out.

The Plymouth Plantation - William Bradford
Until this time they had required that ‘all profits & benefits that are got by trade, traffic, trucking, working, fishing, or any other means’ were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, ‘all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock.’ A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take only what he needed.

From each according to his ability. To each according to his needs.

Nice talking points that actually demonstrate my point for me.
AOC is a freshman Congresswoman. She's not in a position to impose her will on anything.
The Plymouth Plantation is hardly analogous to a fully developed nation-state where no one in power is talking about imposing a communal lifestyle.
Karl Marx is not the only the only political philosopher to propose socialism.

"AOC is a freshman Congresswoman."
Freshman, yes. And quite a few 2020 democratic hopefuls support her views.

"The Plymouth Plantation is hardly analogous to a fully developed nation-state where no one in power is talking about imposing a communal lifestyle."

Medicare for all.
Government guaranteed jobs.
Universal income.
Massive government intervention.
Economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.
Massive transformation of our society.

Sure doesn't sound like free enterprise to me. Nor does it sound like there will be much left of my paycheck. It's government takeover to transform America into a nation it wasn't meant to be all the while China and others argue use of fossil fuels to grow their own economies.

The US falling on the sword of global warming, climate change, extreme weather (whatever term you care to use) is a pointless suicide.
But then America as we know it will be dead and reconstruction can begin from the bottom up. No Constitution, no Bill of Rights of which both documents currently state what the government cannot do. Not exactly something massive government intervention would care to retain.

It is basically a wish list of environmental priorities. As a resolution, it is not legally binding for anything.

It can be interpreted as "if you vote Democrat, this is what will happen."
