A Canadian human rights law firm is accusing a government adoption agency of discriminating against a Christian couple who wanted to become foster parents.

According to the letter, the couple submitted an application in November 2017 to become foster parents. In the week of April 30-May 4 of last year, they met with a Child Services social worker.

The social worker asked the couple, one of whom is a pastor, if they “still” believe “in some of the more outdated parts of the Bible” and if they considered homosexuality a sin.

Last October, the couple received a letter from Child Services declining their application, stating that “the policies of our agency do not appear to fit with your values and beliefs.”

If you believe that natural sexual relations are the only morally acceptable ones, then Canada says you're not fit to parent? How do they think most people become parents?

Canada sucks. I love the Canadians I know, and they have a beautiful country and culture (and have been very welcoming to Christian minorities from 'brown' and 'black' countries; I guess the Copts and others aren't attempting to adopt children right now), but the current government mania of embracing everything that will destroy the society they've built (Islam; garbage like this where government agencies legislate morality; etc.) seems like it's making it quite the hellscape...not that this isn't coming to a neighborhood near you (if it hasn't already, that is) if you live in a different country, but still...yikes.

The "outdated parts of the bible" like its prohibitions against sexual immorality.

Yet we've had how many abortions, deaths from AIDS, scourges of sexuality transmitted diseases, generations of children raised without fathers (likely the primary reason for that foster agency to exist in the first place), and courts bogged down to a standstill adjudicating paternity and child support caes?

Congratulations Canadian foster program. You are the problem.

Is the concern that if a queer child is placed with them, they may not support that child adequately?

The "concern" is that the child would be brought up as a Christian.

Exactly. They want to eradicate any form of Christianity that is not amenable to being used by the state in service of its ideology. It's the Western version of the reconciliation meetings forced on the Copts in Egypt, which always end in "Agree with what we say; you wouldn't want to make more problems for your community by appearing to be against the society's values (Islam), would you?", except shrunken down to the individual family/potential parent, in accordance with Western ideals of individuality (which this stupid agency violates by essentially barring Christianity from continuing by barring children from being raised in it).

I don't really get it.

I think there may be a concern of irreversible emotional damage and psychologically scarring to such a child to be raised by fundamentalist Christian parents who are prejudice toward homosexuals.

Hi JC,

Well, I'm sure that if the couple feels strongly that they should be allowed to adopt, they can either A: Choose a non-state run adoption service, or B: appeal the ruling.

I don't know about Canada, but we have several christian based adoption services here in the U.S. that would be glad to place a child with such parents, if that's the only draw back that the state has.

A lot of times these local council rulings reflect more the attitudes and mores of the particular individual in that district or local office that is making the decision and such a decision can usually be appealed.

However, as someone else has said earlier, we surely shouldn't let such a thing really surprise us or ruffle our feathers. The prospective parents will be doing a good thing and should likely achieve the same results for themselves and a child in need of parents if they work through a christian based adoption service. I think that I would at least start with an appeal just to make sure that such a decision is really the decision of such state run department overall.

After reading the full article and the one that follows on the linked site, it would seem that they've already started the process of appealing the decision and likely have a good case to have it overturned based on the one previously overturned in Alberta.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

I know fundamentalist Christians are adamantly against homosexuality. There is a thread in the Fundamentalist Christian faith sub-forum where this belief is strongly discussed. As far as what is defined as a fundamentalist, here is the Fundamentalist Christians Statement of Purpose. I'm thinking I should have included evangelical Christians based on my own personal experiences being raised in that kind of household and what I've witnessed firsthand during the course of my lifetime. I'll just say that I've very leery of both of these sects of Christianity because of my own life experiences.

So are Catholics, Orthodox, LCMS (Lutherans), and most Christian churches. Well at least those who believe the Holy Scriptures are the infallible inspired Word of God.

It's about how you respond to it, though. If you're going to send a minor off to conversion therapy boot camp or something, I can see why the authorities would have an issue (which is different to having a belief that particular behaviour is sinful, in itself).

Who said anything extreme like that.

They were asked if they actually believed portions of the OT and the questioning was intimidating and leading.

Yes, I know. I didn't want to say Christian parents in general because my husband and I taught our children to treat homosexuals or anyone else who is different than they are with respect and dignity. We basically taught our children to treat other people the way they want to be treated. I'm sad to say that this important life lesson was not something neither he or I were taught when we were growing up in our own Christian family. We were determined that our own children would learn this lesson.

I'm not saying they would do it. I'm saying I can see how authorities might be concerned if they thought parents might do it.
