WHERE DOES IT SAY GOD'S SABBATH IS ABOLSIHED AND WE ARE COMMANDED TO KEEP SUNDAY AS A HOLY DAY?

What you are saying about "weeks" being always connected to the word "Sabbath" in the Hebrew is not Scriptural; nor are you being intellectually honest with your method of hermeneutics. Yet I suspect you already know this.

"weeks" = Strongs# 7620:
"Sabbath" = Strongs #7677.

7620 - "week" is a derivative of the number "seven".
7677 - "Sabbath" is a derivative of the word "rest".

So for you to say that "week" in Hebrew is a derivative of the word "Sabbath"; is not being Scripturally sound or intellectually honest.

Also "mia Sabbaton" is NEVER used in the Hebrew to name or describe "the first day of the week". Genesis 1:5 when the Scripture describes the first day; it does not use the word Sabbath. The Hebrew literally says "day one".

So since the Hebrew denotes "day one" as "first day of the week"; when it comes to denoting "first day of the week" in the New Testament, for "hermeneutical consistency" the Holy Spirit could have just as easily directed the writers of the New Testament to use the same linguistic arrangement used in the Old Testament. He didn't do that though.

I wanted to thank some of the people posting their rebuttals on the thread the last day or so. I think there has been a lot of really good discussion.

I wanted to especially thank Righterzpen. Christian Apologetics is a bit of a hobby of mine, but the one area I struggle with are Biblical languages (God didn't grace with gifts in this area, when it comes to learning new languages). I took a year of Koine and a year of Hebrew at a Fuller Theological seminary extension campus, and I struggled to maintain a B- in Greek, and a C- in Hebrew, so this kind of input is quite useful to me and I thank you for it!

Oftentimes Sabbatarians will use this scripture below to prove that the Sabbath will be kept in eternity. But are they keeping the new moon now?

Isaiah 66:23
From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me,” says the Lord.

The purpose of the NEW MOON in the OLD COVENANT was to be a sign for certain times of the year and define the beginning of the OLD COVENANT annual FEAST days for God's people to meet together to honor God * GENESIS 1:14-19; EZEKIEL 45:17-25. Who says there will not be NEW MOONS in the NEW EARTH? God's WORD says there will be *ISAIAH 66:23

May God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

Literally, not allegorically. Did Jesus teach using literal language or allegorical language? What was the reason he said he spoke this way? Matthew 13:13-15

Even the self-serving nature understands literal language most of the time; but that nature has no access to 'words of life'.

Hello brother dstamps, nice to see you again. Jesus spoke in both parables and plainly to those who BELIEVED and FOLLOWED him.

God bless.

Your claim is Abraham had the law given to Israel while Moses says no. Do you ask what should we trust - the Scripture or you?

Your making things up now do you have any scriptures to share? All I am hearing is your words arguing with God's WORD and not addressing the posts and the scriptures you are quoting from.

As posted in earlier posts to you before the written WORD was the SPOKEN WORD of GOD. Happy to repost the scriptures for you if you like just let me know?

GENESIS 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

The HEBREW words used in this verse is TORAH. Let me know if you would like me to re-post the rest of the OLD TESTAMENT scriptures on the SPOKEN Word of God before Sinai.

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD.

The OP is asking a question based on ignoring the Scripture.

The sabbath is so important to Christianity that the only day specifically mentioned after the cross is Sunday with Jesus and His disciples.

Not at all the OP is asking questions to provide scripture to answer the questions that ask where is the scripture that says God's 4th commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day?

As shown through this OP in the NEW COVENANT God's ETERNAL LAW (10 commandments) give us the KNOWLEDGE of GOOD and EVIL; SIN and RIGHTOUESNESS *ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7; 1 JOHN 3:4; PSALMS 119:172.

God's 4th Commandment is one of the 10 commandments that give us the KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is when broken. God's WORD says that if we break any one of God's 10 commandments we stand guilty before God of SIN *JAMES 2:10-11.

All those who CONTINUE in KNOWN UNREPENTANT SIN will not enter into the KINGDOM of HEAVEN *HEBREWS 10:26-27 because they reject the gift of God's dear son *ROMANS 6:23. OBEDIENCE to God's LAW is not how we are saved it is the FRUIT of God's work in us as we BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD. If our faith has no fruit it is dead *JAMES 2:18-20; 26 and our tree will be cast down and thrown into the fire *MATTHEW 3:10; 7:19-20; 13:49-50.

Do you have any scriptures to share?

Hope this helps

Hi Selene03, there is no scripture that says that the LORD'S DAY is Sunday or the first day of the week. God's WORD tells us what day is the LORD'S DAY. All we need to do is ask the question and let God's WORD answer it. What day is the LORD'S DAY according to God's WORD?

MATTHEW 12:8. FOR THE SON OF MAN IS LORD EVEN OF THE SABBATH DAY.

God bless.

The Holy Bible is the truth and the word of God, but it doesn't tell you everything. Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh. He is also the Truth. We believe that the Bible is the inerrant truth of God, but the Holy Bible also says that the Church is also the foundation and pillar of truth. Why the Church? Because Christ, who is the Truth, is Head of the Church.

1 Timothy 3:15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

If you are a person who believes in Scripture alone, then Scripture itself tells you that the pillar and foundation of truth is also the Church of the living God. It is in the Church where you will find that the Lord's Day is on Sunday. As I said, St. John knew when the Lord's Day was when he wrote about it, and this was information that was passed down to the Early Christians.

Hi Selene03, nice to see you again sister.

Do you know who God's Church is according to God's WORD?

God bless.

I don't think it's the SDA because obviously they didn't know that the Lord's Day was Sunday.

Hi again sister Selena,

I asked you; Do you know who God's Church is according to God's WORD?

There is no scripture that says that the LORD'S DAY is Sunday. There is scripture however that says that the LORD'S DAY is the SABBATH DAY *MATTHEW 12:8.

So do you know who God's Church is according to God's WORD?

God bless.

I actually re-read an article last night that I think applies here. The context of it speaks of the difference between Sola Scriptura of the early magisterial reformers vs. the more radical approach to that hermeneutic and creed dubbed "Solo Scriptura".

HISTORICAL PROBLEMS

It should go without saying that solo scriptura was not the doctrine of the early Church or of the medieval Church. However, most proponents of solo scriptura would not be bothered in the least by this fact because they are not concerned to maintain any continuity with the teaching of the early Church. On the other hand, some are concerned to claim that their teaching is the doctrine of the classical Reformers. As we have demonstrated already, this is simply false. The classical Reformers did not adhere to Tradition 0 which is essentially all that solo scriptura is. Any claim by adherents of solo scriptura to be carrying on the teaching of the Reformers is incorrect. It is said either out of ignorance or deceit. The roots of solo scriptura lay not in the Apostles, not in the early Church, and not in the Reformers, but instead in the individualism of the Radical Reformation, the rationalism of the Enlightenment, and the democratic populism of early America.

The doctrine of solo scriptura also faces serious problems when we consider what rule of faith the Church used in the years between Christ’s death and the widespread availability of the entire Scripture. If solo scriptura is true, then much of the Church was left without any standard of truth for centuries. In the early centuries of the Church it was not possible to go to a local Christian bookstore and buy a copy of the Bible. Manuscripts of the Bible had to be hand-copied and were therefore not found in every believer’s home. The letters of the New Testament were written over a period of decades. Some churches had some portions, while other churches had others. Only gradually was the New Testament as we know it gathered and distributed as a whole.22 Additionally, large segments of the Church were illiterate for centuries. If the lone individual Christian is to evaluate everything by himself and for himself according to his Bible, as solo scriptura maintains, how would it have worked in the first centuries of the Church for those with no access to a Bible? How would it work for those who could not read a Bible even if they had access to one? Again, the doctrine of solo scriptura is observed to be something tailor made by and for modern literate Christians. For many Christians throughout much of the Church’s history, it wouldn’t even have been possible. The doctrine of solo scriptura requires an anachronistic reading of modern conditions back into periods of history when those conditions did not exist.

Please explain why it doesn't apply to people not observing those things.
I think you misunderstood. Carefully review the verse. Paul states "let no one judge you." So the germane question is - judge you regarding what? Answer is their ongoing observance of food/drink, religious festivals, new moons, Sabbath day. These believers did not cease these observances but instead were continuing to practice them. So Paul is commanding them to not allow anyone to judge them regarding these practices. Most misconstrue this verse to mean these believers no longer engaged in these practices but if that were the case why would Paul tell them to not allow anyone to judge them regarding these practices? Even the next verse (v.17) which follows confirms this interpretation as it states "These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Note that this verse does not state "These were a shadow.... If these practices had indeed ceased, then "were" would have been an appropriate word choice as they are no longer in effect. However the verse states that they "are" a shadow meaning that were still in affect and still being practiced. Therefore let no one judge you regarding your practice of these things makes the most sense.

Hmm all I see in this post is the teachings and traditions of men here arguing against the WORD of GOD. Only God's WORD is true and we should believe and FOLLOW it over the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God. It is God's WORD alone that clearly defines who his Church is and it is not a church that follows the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God. It is JESUS that says that anyone who KNOWINGLY follows the teachings and traditions of men that break the commandments of God are not following God. I believe JESUS how about you?

May God help you as you seek him through his Word.

The whole aforementioned article is really great and worth reading in its entirety, but I'm also going to post this section as well.

SCRIPTURAL PROBLEMS

Scripture itself indicates that the Scriptures are the possession of the Church and that the interpretation of the Scripture belongs to the Church as a whole, as a community. In particular it has been entrusted to specially gifted men. This has already been examined in some detail in the previous discussion of the Bereans and the Jerusalem Council. The Apostles did not tell every individual believer to take their Bibles and decide by themselves and for themselves whether the Judaizers were correct. On the contrary, they gathered in a council as a body and discerned the truth of the matter. Their decision then was given to the various churches. The fundamental point is that Christ established His Church with a structure of authority that is to be obeyed (Heb. 13:7). Even in the first years of the Church, there were those who were specially appointed to the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:2-4). In his letters to Timothy and Titus, Paul indicates that a special teaching ministry was to continue after his death (cf. 1 Tim. 3:1-7; 2 Tim. 4:2; Titus 8:5-9). The modern Evangelical doctrine of Scripture essentially destroys the real authority of ministers of the Word and the Church as a whole.

Adherents of the Evangelical position also ignore the positive scriptural references to tradition. The Gospel was preached for at least 15-20 years prior to the writing of the first book of the New Testament, and that preached gospel was authoritative and binding. This apostolic tradition was the faith of the churches who received the first books of the New Testament, and it was the context within which these books and the books of the Old Testament were to be interpreted. This is the tradition to which the churches were commanded to adhere (e.g., 2 Thess. 3:6). We have already discussed the manner in which this apostolic kerygma was taught to every catechumen and recited from memory at baptism. It is important for our purposes here simply to note that this hermeneutical context of Scripture was not abrogated once Scripture was completed. The Scriptures were written to already existing churches, and this means that these churches had the Gospel before they had the completed Scriptures.

That isn't Who Jesus is addressing here. Jesus was speaking to non believing Jews about a question concerning the end times. What is at issue here is the habits of the general population of Jews. It caused many Jews to lose their life in 70 AD.

Matthew 24: 3-9 (NRSV) When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: 8 all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. 9 “Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. 10 Then many will fall away,

Verse 20:

Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath.

Seventh Day Adventists are listed as a cult in the book The Kingdom of the Cults:

The Kingdom of the Cults - Wikipedia

Thanks for this brother as it adds to a good introduction to my next post. This post is not directed at you personally. It is a post of general scriptures that apply to us all.

GOD'S WORD vs TRADITIONS OF MEN

It is amazing how those that do not have God's WORD to supoport their traditions that break the commandments of God accuse those who have God's WORD of things that are not true.

The religious teachers in the days of Jesus said that he had a devil and his followers were a cult this was also independently verifiable in the days of Jesus and the Apostles. Just ask the Jews who hung Jesus on the cross (John 7:20; John 8:48; 52; Matt 10:25 12:24; Acts 28:22).

This could be said of all those who followed Jesus throughout time even before Jesus the religious teachers of the day killed the prophets sent to them by God to share God's WORD (Luke 11:47; Matt 23:31)

Stephen was stoned to death it was independently verified that he was blaspheming because no one could argue with the scriptures that he was presenting (Acts 6:8-15).

Paul, Peter and most of the Apostles were also executed because it was independently verified by the religious teachers of the day that they could not respond to God's WORD they were sharing with them.

Not to mention all those of the reformation and the birth of Protestantism and the inquisition of the Roman Catholic Church which executed millions of God's people because it was independently verified by the Roman Catholic Church that they were all heretics and should be burned at the stake.

Now today you call heretic or cult because it is independently verified because you cannot respond to the scriptures that disagree with your Catholic traditions which has led many to break God's Commandments?

ONLY God's WORD is true and you do not have it to support your tradition that breaks the commandments of God. The WORD of God is sent to help you have a closer walk with God but you reject God's WORD in order to follow the traditions of the fathers.

Jesus and Paul spoke correctly quoting Isaiah;

Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and not perceive: For the heart of this people is stubborn, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Something to think about who do we BELIEVE and FOLLOW? The teachings and traditions of men that break the Commandments of God or the WORD of GOD. Jesus says those who follow man made traditions that break God's Commandments are not following him...

MATTHEW 15:2-9 [2], Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. [3], But he answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? [4], For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death. [5], But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatever you might be profited by me; [6], And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. [7], You hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, [8], This people draws near to me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. [9], But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

It is very clear according to Jesus if we follow the teachings and traditions of men that break the Commandments of GOD we are not following God.

In times of ignorance God winks at but now ,<when a KNOWLEDGE of the truth has come> calls all men everywhere to REPENT (FOLLOW) (Acts 17:30-31).

.......................

SIN is the breaking of God's Commandments (James 2:9-11; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4) Those who CONTINUE in UNREPENTANT SIN will NOT enter into the KINGDOM of HEAVEN.

.......................

God's 4th commandment is one of the ten (Exodus 20:8-11) If we knowingly break it when God asks us not to we stand guilty before God of committing sin (James 2:8-12). If we do not seek him in repentance and forgiveness we are in danger of the Judgement (Hebrews 10:26-27)

Sunday worship is a tradition and teaching of man that has led many to break the commandments of God. Jesus says that if we follow the traditions of man that break the commandments of God we are not following God (Matthew 15:3-9)

There is not one scripture in all of God's Word that says that God's 4th Commandment is now ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to KEEP Sunday as a Holy day.

Who should we follow the teachings and traditions of men or the Word of God? Who should we believe the Words of men or the Word of God?

God bless

How do you know the "apostolic" traditions are specifically in view here.

Every early Christian sect, be it Catholic, Gnostic, Marcionite, Ebionite, you name it, claimed to go back to the original apostles.

Sorry brother. You asked for if I understood what a strawman argument was. I responded and provided you with a definition from wiki showing your the one making the strawman not me. It is God's WORD and JESUS who says that all those who KNOWINGLY follow the teachings and traditions of men are not following God not me *MATTHEW 15:3-9.

Wiki
A straw man is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting anargument that was not presented by that opponent. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man."

Your making broard general claims for the all of those who go to Church on Sunday that simply is not true. In my experience sharing God's WORD throughout my time there are many who genuinely teach and think God's 4th commandment is not binding on Christians or is abolished so your claims here are simply not true.

I am not making an argument against someone but simply providing the word of GOD in MATTHEW 15:3-9 and asking the questions where is the scripture for this tradition that has lead many to break God's 4th commandment. Your trying to make an argument against the OP and God's WORD that is not true.

It is your side not mine that is making the strawman against God's 4th commandment which is one of Gods 10 Commandments that give us the KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is when broken *ROMANS 3:4; ROMANS 7:7; 1 JOHN 3:4. God's 4th Commandment is one of those 10 commandments. JAMES says that if we break any one of God's 10 commandments we stand guilty before God of SIN

God's WORD says all those who CONTINUE in KNOWN UNREPENTANT SIN will not enter into the KINGDOM of HEAVEN *HEBREWS 10:26-27 because they reject the gift of God's dear son *ROMANS 6:23.

If you do not have scripture for your position then why follow man made traditions over the WORD of GOD? Only God's WORD is true and we should BELIEVE and FOLLOW it. *ROMANS 3:4

God bless.
It is a straw man because no one says the Sabbath is abolished and no one says there is a commandment to keep Sunday. So where is your argument? Why don't you refute something that people are actually saying?
