1. Midian, the Midianites, descended from Abraham and Keutrah. (Now Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah, and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. (Gen 25:1,2)). Therefore, Moses’ wife, Zipporah, who was the daughter of Jethro priest of Midian, was of the lineage of Abraham (Exo 2:18-22; 3:1).
2. Cush, the Cushites, was a descendant of Ham (Genesis 10:6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. (Gen 10:6 NIV)) and were not associated genetically with Abraham, a Sematic. Cush is also called Ethiopia (Gen 2:13 KJV).
3. Moses, divorced Zipporah in Exodus 18:2: “And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Moses' wife Zipporah, after he had sent her away,” (NAS). The Hebrew dictionary at this point states, ”The meaning ‘send away’ is generally found in the Piel and is seen in Gen 12:20; Gen 18:16. Genesis 3:23 clearly involves an expulsion…”
4. Moses, years after his divorce of Zipporah, married a Cushite woman. (“And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.” (Num 12:1 KJV)). There is no way that this Cushite (Ethiopian), Moses’ new wife, was a Midianite, as one group, the Cushites, descended from Ham and the other, the Midianites, from Shem both sons of Noah.
5. Only by doing some type of gymnastics with the geography or with linguistics can anyone assert that Moses was not divorced and not remarried.
6. Moses obviously broke the Mosaic Code (pun intended) about divorce, and thus, Aaron and Miriam were upset – and rightly so, one would expect. However, God is not upset with Moses’ divorce and remarriage, but descends upon Moses’ accusers: Aaron and Miriam. Thus, we clearly see God’s view of divorce under the old law; He was gracious; how much more gracious is He now under the new law and time of grace.
7. Even though we humans like to categorize sins in the ‘least’ to ‘worse,’ God’s list of most grievous sin is quite different. God’s list of sins is recorded in Pro 6:16-19: “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” Amazingly, divorce does not even enter the list grievous sins – neither does, shall I say it, homosexuality.
8. That all being said, divorce is a sin. It needs to be avoided at all costs.
