I'm sorry I'm such a pain, but I ignorantly did something to my computer. I tried to download a PDF and now I can't find the page with my favorites. I can't restore what I had before. I guess I'm the village idiot!

Can some smarter person please help?

First of all, relax and dont beat yourself up. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

What do you mean with favorites? The favorites in your browser? If so, which browser are you using?

I really am ignorant regarding computers; that's why I don't know how to explain what I did. I was looking at some genealogy and the screen told me to download a pdf and stupid me --- I tried that. I use Google Chrome that someone set up for me. So when I get online a page comes up that says GOOGLE in large letters. If I click a round button with a plus sign (at the top of the screen), I get a page that has my frequently visited sites. That page is gone now!

Try opening a new tab in chrome and see if they are there.

It would be in history, not favorites. favorites you have to create manually. History just tracks your recent browsed locations.

I'm sure folks can help you get it sorted out. Your history is findable elsewhere, depending on your browser and versions.

I wanted to caution on this though ...

the screen told me to download a pdf

I might be misunderstanding you, but in case I'm not - NEVER let a pop up tell you to download anything! If you didn't go looking for it (and verify that it's safe), do NOT download or install anything to your computer. Also don't accept phone calls or emails from anyone about "fixing" any issues, if you didn't contact them yourself and ask for help. Those are common ways for hackers/viruses/etc to get into your computer. Be especially careful if you store any personal data or use your computer to access anything financial or otherwise sensitive, as all that can be stolen. But even if your computer is just a tool or toy for enjoyment, you still risk the computer itself by letting such things in.

Be careful. :)

I hunted for the page but I can't find it and I'm scared of making a worse mess of things. It's so depressing to think I might be learning disabled (but actually uneducated in technology).

First, are you on Apple or Windows?

Second, is the big + still there? Does it still take you to the new tab/Google page? (Bear in mind that on some days the big "Google" is replaced by a special picture) Can you scroll down on that page to get frequently visited sites?

Third, have you tried closing Google Chrome and restarting it?

Since I am using a different browser, Ill let others take the lead.

But perhaps it would be good if you posted a screenshot with your browser. We can explain how to do that.

... but not if there's anything personally identifiable showing.

Google Plus is going away. Have you received an email to that situation?

I don't think so.

The big Google page is there. The next page has several sites icons in it but they are gone! I have windows but my late husband set that up.

I'm going to beg for help from someone locally or go into depression.

I have only Chromebooks for laptops here at home. My plus sign part is only for adding shortcuts. I have two tablets that also use Google Chrome. I don't see any plus signs at the top of the page. I can click on the right top edge and get my bookmarked pages. I also have a choice of seeing the first part of the list of those pages across the top of my screen -as to show bookmarks bar.

You have nothing as to restore shortcuts? Mine is in the bottom right part of the screen where the icons are found. It looks like a gear symbol -or settings type.

I don't know nuttin' but we ain't talkin' about the same + sign.

does that mean it's solved?

Actually, it is now!  YAY! I closed the program and started up again. Thanks.
