What kinds of words do I pray to offer up my sufferings for my former husband in purgatory?

This is brand new territory for me, still learning the faith....

I deeply feel that my ex had a lot of things to still work out with god, and as such, is in purgatory..

I think to enter heaven you have to be in a state of grace, correct?

Without confessing all our sins and making right with God, then most of us can end up there too.

I do sense my former husband most days of the week, and feel him all around me, and I get a sense not of contentment but of being "stuck."

I don't sense he is at peace.

I feel him looking at me and I with him, in a spiritual sense, and I feel driven to pray for him.

I am yet to understand this, but praying when I am in pain and am suffering, can help get him into heaven?

We haven't quite covered this in rcia, or I didn't get enough information to grasp what can go on here.

I am in a lot of pain, and its been a blessing, bc its driving me to go to the Lord even more than before.

He is directing all my steps.

So what kinds of prayers do I say when in pain and how do I offer up my pain and what exactly does this accomplish for my former husband?

Prayer for the Dead:

God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.

In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer for those in Purgatory:

O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them.
Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames.
And, Merciful Savior, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace.
Amen.

I would also suggest just talking to God. Just pray without a script.

People are focusing on the different parts of the church doctrines with a very varying level of intensity.
I, for example believe there is a purgatory where most souls are held back for final purification but I don't go much farther than that.
I stand by Trent's statement, but that's it.

I rather tend to focus on Christ and Mary and the love of God. One may believe in it all, but accept some parts and leave it at that and truely endorse others.

As I recall you said somewhere that you're converting or just did or something I deemed this input necessary for you as I had to be catholic for years before I stopped spending time on the parts of catholic doctrine hidden to me.

how is my physical pain, being offered, of help to him?

I don't get it....isn't this his burden to bear?

What does the magisterium teach on this....does anyone know?

If you are talking about the concept of offering it up: Think about it this way. All our pain is joined to Christ who took not just the sins of the world but all the suffering of a fallen world that is caused by sin.

So when you turn your heart and pray that any suffering you are given is turned over to Christ for the salvation of souls...you are joining yourself voluntarily to the Cross. Although it is his burden to bear, you are out of love offering to help. As sin was our burden born by Christ, you join yourself, of your own free will, to the Cross. The merits of Christ are infinite, He does not need this. But think of it this way...as children I think most of us thought..."We would help Him with that Cross. We would not leave Him alone"

My grandmother described the concept to me like this when I was older and asked. She told me to remember when I was little and we would read the story of the Passion. Or when we would do the Stations of The Cross. And I would get upset because He was alone and someone had to be forced to help Him carry the cross. She told me that when we offer up suffering and join ourselves to the cross we, even though He is sufficient in Himself, are like the children who say: "I will not leave You alone. I will help."

And when we do that also offering prayers and suffering for those in purgatory, we do that in love too. Even if it is theirs to bear. We ask God to join us to the Cross because through Christ is the only way to help.

I'm helping to bear His cross, like Simon did?....this makes no sense to me as to how that translates to helping my former husband who is most likely in purgatory.

Because in purgatory all are there by sin, that Christ victoriously conquers in His Passion. When we join to it willingly we join our Lord. We have no power on our own. But our love for our Lord is the greatest thing. And that love informs our love for others. It is by a chain of love to our Redeemer that all our love and prayers are sanctified and used by Him for His plans.

When it comes to purgatory I stand by Trent.
That being said I do think we sometimes fall into a ditch where we think we must help Christ save souls even postmortem.
To be honest I believe in Purgatory, but I think Christ heals the souls held back there perfectly fine on his own without our interference.

@Davidnic you say the most lovely things, so thank you for that. I will have to search the net and try and find other explanations and maybe videos....sometimes I learn better with images or sound.

You are very kind and I do appreciate your love for the Lord.

Offering up suffering and the benefits of prayer for those in purgatory is not an easy concept. Don't worry if it takes you some time. I'll also search for other ways to explain it. But it is a rather mystical concept.
