Gillette's new ad isn't about shaving. It's about men in the age of #metoo

There is nothing wrong in that message.

It's just more of the MeToo same and I don't appreciate it. I have a son, and a husband and I'll fight this tooth and nail.

It's pure politics, and I'm boycotting.

Don't you think that was one time too many ?

As a man, I have NEVER had to deal with this situation.
Well, I am a man, and I have had to deal with it in my own life.

But the more important point is that what happens somewhere, sometime, to somebody is NOT "what men are like." And that is what the commercial we are discussing is--stereotyping.

I don't think that it does.

If anything, the commercial calls upon decent men to step up their protection of women and children ...

I saw the ad. I don't think that it makes this implication.

(Some) men do need to be socialized to treat women better.

I disagree that the ad does not imply that men are innately misogynistic . All children need to raised by their parents to treat others as they would want to be treated.

Do you have the indwelling Holy Spirit, God Himself to convict you of sin?

Why Christians think they need all this other correction while they don’t listen to God’s correction, but depend on the world is baffling.

Speechless

All children need to raised by their parents to treat others as they would want to be treated.

But all children are not raised so.

So, what are you willing to do to make a better world for your female loved-ones ?

The majority of my female acquaintances have reported to me (at various times) life-changing stories of harassment, assault, and abuse. A childhood friend recently opened up about a rape that occurred when she was a teen.

I want my female loved ones to be able to live lives without this consistency of threat.

It may not be as bad in the US as in other countries. That doesn't mean that we still don't have work to do.

My wife, my sisters, my nieces, cousins, and friends all deserve better.

As far as when I was sexually harrassed in the workplace, it was in the 80's.. 80's sexual harassment problems HAVE been addressed, and were addressed in full by the end of the 90's... You'll never fix every problem, there's always going to be the odd man out, the mentally disturbed whatever.. but as far as a we can do as a society? that's been done, what's left only God can fix - not Nazi feminism.

I'm disabled for life at the hands of a man, but it stems from cultural and religious differences with some mental illness thrown in, not from western civilization..

Western civilization isn't broken. We can't take the man out of men, or we loose western civilization. What? will women protect us now? I think not - we NEED men, we can't be busy neutering them.

Yes abuse has happened, it can happen, women are physically weaker.. I could never pick up and throw my ex-husband across the room the way he could throw me. I had no physical defense against him..

But just because some few men in society are bad, doesn't mean we need to drug boys for being more rambunctious at school, or teach them that they are evil rapist monsters in waiting before puberty, and make commericals telling men most of them need to become better.

It's BS.

I've walked alone in the ghetto at 4am and been safe. I've lived my life without fear, with the exception of one.. not even the sexual harassment was horrible - I had a new job within 2 hours of walking out of that one.

Life is life.. Nazi feminism isn't the solution to the very few problems our society faces.

Love this post. Totally agree and I’m a woman too!

You do know that all people are not Christian.

What percentage of people do you think are really christian. Jesus said that the road to life is narrow.

What are you willing to do to protect your female loved-ones from the non-Christians who think that they can have their way with them ?

That was the deceit. I'll admit that I was taken in by it also.

But then came Cosby, and Weinstein, and Lauer, and characters from both sides of the political sphere, and various corporate players, and, of course, the Catholic church.

And as I heard the stories from my female loved-ones, ... one story after another, it became clear that there was still a lot of work to do ...

Too many of my female loved-ones have related to me stories like this ... told only after years of hiding the secret ... for me to not be a part of a possible solution.

The ad was not calling for men to be neutered ... it was calling for good, decent men to step up and do what they can ... to shield and protect their loved-ones ...

The Catholic church is because preists don't marry. Studies have been done on life long celibacy and its been shown celibacy (especially for those many who are not naturally inclined to it) causes mental health issues. And those mental health issues we see in spades in the Catholic church. It could be fixed really easy...

The commercial is not high-minded; it is politics and business.

If it were truly heartfelt and idealistic in the way that those who delighted to see it would have everybody else believe, it would have been made without patterning itself so closely after the style of a certain political faction. It would instead have been an appeal for civility or kindness or empathy--basically what you said, "A_Thinker." But that approach would probably not result in as many sales as the company thinks this one will.

What can you say is false about the message of the ad? What did it say that was morally wrong?

"When you see men acting badly, stand up against it."

What's your criticism of that concept? You cannot honestly claim that the commercial stereotypes men when it shows men doing the right thing. It merely calls every man to be an Atticus Finch, a Lone Ranger, a Roy Rogers, a Superman.

Or are you simply offended that someone has stood up to say it?

And if so, why?

I would not have a problem with the message that you have given "When you see men acting badly, stand up against it.". That, however. is not the complete message of the commercial. The contention of the commercial that men need to be stopped because there is and has always been an epidemic of bad behavior caused by masculinity itself that the great majority of men in the past and still today engage in while handing waving away any objections to such behavior by saying "boys will be boys" is what I object to. I find that to be stereotyping and I find it insulting to the vast majority of men to be lumped in with the few actual misogynists that could use reigning in and do not need to be policed by Superman, Atticus Finch or The Lone ranger because they are decent human beings that treat others with the proper consideration and respect.
