I'm new to forums, but I feel very isolated living here. I am from the U.S., but have felt more comfortable living overseas. I find the cultural ambience here depressing, I think because we are such a secular society. So I'm looking for support and ideas of how to get through this w/o being too negative, thanks!

I believe the US is overly influenced by Laodicean times..

“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” -Revelations 3:13-22

Welcome Michaela. I agree it can be difficult to be in the U.S. but ironically this is a very Christian nation compared to other places like Europe, there are just temptations here because of the high standard of living to turn away from God because many essential needs are met, which I believe is a contributing factor to the secularism in this country.

Just in case you don't know, there's a sub-forum here for us Eastern Orthodox. It's mostly Americans. Here's a link to it: The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodox

And welcome!

Having been to and through every state except Alaska, and having resided in 12 of them for 3 months or more, I can tell you that the socio-cultural atmosphere here is well beyond secular in most communities. All that travel raised my awareness of many goings on that are common cultural trappings, within all the states, that are well beyond making Babylon, Sodom, and Gomorrah look old fashioned, even austere. Professing Christianity does not make all those professing it an actual Christian in practice, it takes a little more than drawing near with the mouth as Christ said (recall that he referred to them as pretenders). I too have been outside the country for months at a time, on a couple occasions, and agree that there is a feeling of being unburdened by disassociating from all the evil and hypocrisy practiced here in the name of maintaining and accumulating an easier lifestyle and more excess wealth. Those considered "poor" in the U.S.A. are often obese, have touchscreen devices, and maintain multiple addictions; which would indicate some seriously skewed perceptions among the citizenry, with heavy bias favoring completely Un-Christian mindsets, if anyone is being honest with themselves any more. Unfortunately I have yet to be able to expatriate for good, but it is always something I'm hoping to do, if and when God might allow it.
