Most of these statues were of free masons and those that were part of secret societies.

Leviticus 19:4:
Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I [am] the LORD your God

Psalm 135:15:
The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, The work of man's hands.

Why bother?

Why not remove all statues, if it's free to do ? Monuments too?

No one is saying civil statues to military or political historical figures are idols.

I would entirely support replacing statues of Confederate Civil War generals with statues of General Sherman, General Grant, and Abe Lincoln. Mostly Sherman.

Exodus 20:4:
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

I did. That is why I said what I did.

They are NOT idols. No one thinks they are “gods.”
Until about 1500 years ago, give or take , God's People, or the people who are called by His Name, knew better. Things changed. (away from God; away from truth; and are going faster today ..... )

Context. That is talking about objects of divine worship. Which only goes to God.

If that includes images of humans, then you should not ever have a picture taken or show an avatar on your posts. You should never look at a map or a news paper. Never attend a movie or watch tv.

Fortunately for all of us, those things are NOT what the scripture is talking about.

Statues are a graven image that is being formed and shaped with hands. What use does it have other than for idolatry???

I know this is going to be a reference to people like Washington and Jefferson, so I'll give this answer. Confederate generals are famous primarily because they fought for a failed rebellion in order to preserve the right to own slaves. That's different i think then the founders.

What about before continental days. Columbus for example.
Columbus was a horrid human being in general. I wouldn't mind statutes to him going bye bye, and I say this as somebody with Italian heritage.

There are statues of Columbus??? Who knew.

Anyway, from what I've read outside of traditional American history books, the man was outright evil. Only people who followed in his evil footsteps would welcome a statue of him in their city park.
