Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12: 28-29 KJV)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
(Proverbs 1:7)

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?... You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name. He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen. (Deuteronomy 10:12, 20-21)

This question has been burning on my heart for some time now. Especially during the last few weeks. I see an ever growing number of Christians seemingly abandoning the word of God and biblical values altogether because they believe they aren't practical, or realistic in today's culture. They unapologetically confess that they are living in sin all the while clinging to the notion that God will just forgive them so it doesn't matter. So the question is simple. What happened to the holy and righteous "Fear of the Lord".

Now, for those who do not know what the "Fear of the Lord" means, it does not merely mean to be "afraid" of God as if He was some vengeful and cruel being. Because God is perfect love and perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:8). Rather, the Fear of the Lord is "the reverence and awe of all that is "God" which renders one to willful obedience in Him". It is recognizing that before God is kind, loving, and merciful, He is holy, righteous, and just. In fact, I have no doubt that God loved every soul that had ever been cast into Hell more than we can ever hope to imagine. So, as Proverbs 1 says, we will be fools to not follow the wisdom and instructions of the Lord.

I hear many people claim to have accepted Jesus Christ as their "Lord and Savior". Which is great! However, Christians tend to imagine Jesus as our loving savior depicted as a smiling man with a child on his lap. However, we tend to forget that "Savior" is a title which describes what Jesus did. He saved. "Lord" is a title for WHO Jesus is. He is Lord of all Creation. Jesus said Himself "If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15) and when He comes again, He won't be wearing a white robe carrying a little lamb on His shoulders while riding a donkey. Instead, He will be riding a white horse and wielding a sword with a robe soaked in the blood of the wicked.

"11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
'King of Kings and Lord of Lords'
."

So once again I ask. Where has the Fear of the Lord gone and why does it seem like so many Christians have abandoned it?

the things of the world: the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life,
have distracted most away from wisdom -
the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
but whoever loves the things of the world cannot be a friend of God.

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Mat 24:13
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

So once again I ask. Where has the Fear of the Lord gone and why does it seem like so many Christians have abandoned it?

The scripture says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. So, if we don't have the fear of the Lord then we don't have true knowledge of God. Neither do we have proper repentance because the fear of the Lord is to depart from evil.

The Lord is holy and executes justice in perfect righteousness. We were saved from His wrath because of the blood of Christ. That is the only reason..

I am not a perfect person and I have seriously slipped up as a Christian. God has corrected me to change my behavior. I need the Lords strength all day every day..

I say that to say that we should live by the fear of the Lord. I have failed God in this respect but I know that He should be reverenced with a godly fear, a filial fear

The society has no knowledge of God, and the church teaches an easy gospel which requires no sacrifice or repentance. I think the fear of the Lord has been disappearing because churches are teaching about a God who winks at our behavior. We sing songs to Him but sometimes even the lyrics focus more on our feelings than who God is.

You brought up a really good point regarding God's correction. A crucial aspect to the Fear of the Lord is understanding how much God hates sin no matter how small and insignificant we or society may think it is—even the sin in the life of a believer. Hebrews 2:5-11 compares God’s discipline of the believer to the discipline a loving parent will administer to their child. The same fear that we have when our momma give us that look when we know we've done messed up is the same fear we ought to have with the Lord.

What is Godly fear? And which bible version is correct?

Hebrews 12:28-29 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us [a]show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Hebrews 12:28-29 New King James Version (NKJV)

They are both correct. Compare the NASB and the NKJV with Proverbs 1:7

@W2L Both of these are identical in English meaning for laymen and children.

(nit-picking educated scholars might wrangle over words, UN-necessarily)

As posted already, both are true and correct, saying the same thing.

This question has been burning on my heart for some time now. Especially during the last few weeks.

So once again I ask. Where has the Fear of the Lord gone and why does it seem like so many Christians have abandoned it?

Human beings can never seem to hit the center. There have been times in our history where the fear of the Lord predominated over His love. Now it's swung the other way and we're more afraid of the world then God and we use His love as an excuse. I just read a story about a missionary killed in India, I think it was. Instead of condemning his death and calling for justice for the perpetrators, everyone is worried about colonialism and multicutural appropriateness in sharing the gospel. Even the evangelicals they interviewed for the study were more concerned with these things then the death of the man, who (although apparently untrained) was trying his best to share the gospel and who was killed only for his Christian faith. I use that as an example of how love of man has driven out the love and fear of God, and the reality that there is a hell and people go there.

You know, there's been a lot of false doctrine over the years. Christians believe a lot of false doctrines! What happens when people get attached to false beliefs, is they need to oppose the truth when the truth threatens to shatter their beliefs. So they become those who "do not hold to sound doctrine, but follow the teaching of demons".

Well, to be honest, we see this pattern throughout the bible. Especially in the Book of Kings and the Book of Judges. I believe that many Christians are deceived to think, "That was Old Testament. Things are different now. God's not like that anymore". To that I respond, "For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either." (Romans 11:21).

Great post! :)

I was thinking to write a post titled "Is Christ your Lord?" just now, then I see your post. Guess I won't be doing now. You cover my points nicely. :)

It is so ironic that so many people do not understand the most fundamental things of being a Christian, yet so many people debate over not-so-important things. Apparently there are many who do not know the meaning of the word "Lord". Even if they understand, they do not make Christ their lord in their lives. It means that if Christ is your Lord, then you are his slave. A slave is supposed to fear the lord. This is a picture clearly shown in the Bible.

I would like to further elaborate your point, by using a post I wrote elsewhere.

No, you should not fear God in this way, but in another way. It is not easy to explain, but I will try with a story in 2 Corinthians 7.

The Corinthians did something really bad before, but later they knew they did wrong. When Titus, a leader of the church came, they received Titus "with fear and trembling" (2 Corinthians 7:15).

Why? Is Titus a bomb that is going to explode anytime soon? No. Is Titus going to beat them up for their sin? No. They do so because Titus is a servant of God, and so they serve him carefully and not do anything that would makes him feel bad.

It is similar to what the fear of God means. It is not about worrying He is going to come to your house and burn you alive. It is an attitude that you truly make Christ your lord (and you his slave) in your life, serve him carefully, and avoid anything that do not please him. You do so not because you fear he will punish you, but because you really care his feelings. This way of thinking, I think, might get you out of the situation you are in.

Thank you very much for posting this. I truly appreciate it.

Thank you. One of the key tenants to being a Christian is "Dying to Self" and to "Take up your cross" by putting Christ above your selfish desires.

Another is that all those desires, both selfish and 'good', must be crucified.

Not everyone who says s/he is a Christian really is one. Scripture confirms that in many places. Genuine Christians haven't lost that healthy fear of the Lord. How could they?

I agree. I do recognize that some Christians are living in sin and do not realize it. I also acknowledge the fact that some are initially resistant and stubborn when confronted about their sinful lifestyle. However, the mark of a true Christian in my opinion is that once the person becomes convinced that they are in sin, they will seek to stop it and repent.

Yes. If we are more concerned about pleasing our fellow man than God, we lack the fear of the Lord. Truly walking with God includes confronting sin when you see it; not embracing sin so that people won't be offended. That is fear of man over the fear of God.

I don't believe it is our job to bring the conviction. We just, in following as the Holy Spirit leads, speak the Truth in love. Whether they accept it or not isn't our responsibility, whether they change or not isn't our responsibility. We don't have to fight about it, they just need to consistently know that our answer doesn't change: sin is sin, based on Scriptures definitions, not the ever-changing perceptions of fallen man.

Yes. I had to remind myself of Ephesians 4 on more than one occasion.

Unity of the Spirit
Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says,

“When He ascended on high,
He led captive a host of captives,
And He gave gifts to men.”

9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

The Christian’s Walk
17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
