The Geek word often translated “perfect” has many meanings.

(1) Jesus commanded us not to be respecter of persons in loving our friends and hating our enemies (Matthew 5:44-47), but to be complete or "perfect" [teleion] like our heavenly Father (v. 48) in loving friends and enemies alike.

(2) Jesus said that the rich, young ruler could be "perfect" [teleion] if he would "go and sell your possessions and feed the poor...." (Matthew 19:21).

(3) Paul said that his preaching was wisdom among those who are "full grown," or "perfect" [teleion] (1 Corinthians 2:6)

(4) Paul urged the Corinthians to be "men" [teleion] (i.e. "full grown" or "perfect") instead of babes (1 Corinthians 14:20).

(5) In Ephesians 4:13 we read that the body of Christ is to be built up unto a full grown, "mature" [teleion] man.

(6) When Paul wrote to the Philippians he said (3:15) that some of the Christians were "perfect" [teleion].

(7) Epaphras prayed that the Colossians would stand "perfect" [teleion] in the will of God (Colossians 4:12).

(8) The Hebrews were chided for not having progressed to the solid food aspect of the Word of God which, said the inspired writer. is for grown, "mature," [teleion] men, described as those who have their senses exercised to discern good and evil (Hebrews 5:14).

(9) James describes the law of liberty as the "perfect" [teleion] law. (James 1:25)

The “perfect” referring the Job and the “perfect” for Christians is not the same as the perfection of Christ, but Christ’s pray does seem to say we can become “one” with God like He is one with God, which is really being one with God (John17:20-23) see post 15.

I for a long time just thought Christians just sin less than non-Christians and just kept getting better over time, so I did not give much weight to my own sinning until:

I got thrown into (volunteered if needed) with the youth (13-21 age) prisoners program teaching Bible (one hour on Sunday morning to a group of 14 with three other Christians teaching groups of 14) and taught three groups of “Christians”. The first group is guys (going to school it is called) that start out their stay causing trouble getting thrown in the tank. Then they start increasingly attending the services, carrying their Bible, being nice, and say they are Christians. By the time the parole board meets they have this glowing report showing continued improvement tied to their increased spirituality and are released. These guys still carry weapons, are members of a gang, and every prisoner knows they just “went to school” to get out. The second group were converted before they went to prison (grandma conversions), but watch raunchy TV, hung with a loss group, laugh at off colored jokes, are not always talking about Jesus and are not trying to convert others. Their first day in prison the snitches see this, the snitches talk to the Bulls that approach these “Christians” saying you are not a Christian (doing everything Christ would do) and make them a slave (often sexual) or at best gang member. They still come to Bible study on Sunday so they can tell Granny (who visits them Sunday afternoon) what they learned, but they are slaves (sometimes sexually) to some bull. The third group is fanatical, they stick close to each other, they: study, pray, witness to everyone, and avoid even a hint of insincerity that the snitches could see. They carry no weapons, but step between those that are being beaten especially in persecution. This group had grown over the last 3 years from just a couple of guys to now 42, but it came at a high price. Each convert had on the day he was baptized given up the protection of his gang membership, turned over his weapons along with all his possessions (the gang owns everything including them), they were beaten if not by the gang they left, then by other gangs looking for payback and then they were watch constantly looking for any sign the snitches might interpret as weakness (anything less than what Christ would do in the situation, would result in a beating and it could be to death). There is absolutely no privacy and these Christians never wanted to be found alone. They slept in barracks where at least one stayed awake all night praying over them so they could sleep without the fear of being smashed in the head in the middle of the night. These guys believed and counted on power from the Holy Spirit, I did not know existed. They come battered and bruised each week hungry for some real meaningful Christ like lesson that goes beyond their group study of 40+hours that week on the same subject, which I could not provide. They mostly helped me with my poor example of Christianity and lack of knowledge and lack of wisdom. They mentored me even though they were only Christian for a few months, but I was a poor disciple and could not keep up with them.

Maybe we do not see the Spirit working in us because we quench Him or are not in situations of really needing Him. Severe persecution brings out the Spirit in those who have the Spirit.

The point is gang members could attend my class without retribution from their gang, but as soon as they committed to emersion baptism they were putting their life on the line, both from their old gang and gangs they had fought in the past.

One example of what I learned from them was: “You do not even try to keep from sinning (be on the defensive), but try to be involved in the next minute, in doing something really good (constantly on the offensive) then the Holy Spirit can be involved with you in doing and you keep doing good stuff all day and night and pick it up the next day. You just do not have time to be involved in any sinning.

You really answered your own question. No.
We are called to be free from our sins but we still remain flesh.

My sin with lust and inappropriate contentography has decreased as I have been renewing my mind daily and giving it over to the Lord. But, that doesn’t mean that I haven’t sinned again in that area, because I have.

We are called to strive for perfection as the Father is perfect (the verse you dropped). That’s the goal and mindset of walking out the Faith, but we are still flesh and will sin because we are not Jesus.

My wife comes (close on some) days.

I miss the mark (on all) days.

Jesus ends Mathew chapter 5 with:

"Be ye therfore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

The bible also called Job an "uprighy and perfect man" yet, I hear Christians all the time say we can not obtain perfection on Earth. Only Jesus did that or could ever do that.

But he tells us to be perfect. I know I have sinned thousands upon thousands of times before I was saved and since. It bothers me really bad but I have asked for forgiveness many times for the same sin. I inow once is enough but I still do it.

I know the bible also says "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" but I'd like to keep this after you accept Jesus and become saved.

So can we achieve perfection like Jesus said and Job? Or what does Jesus mean in chapter 5? This is a question I have thought about about many times.
Matt 5:43-48 should not be understood as Jesus saying we are to be absolutely perfect in every respect. Read the context.
Matthew 5:43-48
(43) "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
(44) But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
(45) that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
(46) If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
(47) And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
(48) Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
God loves those who hate Him, God causes the sun to shine and rain to fall even on the unrighteous therefore you do likewise.

Coming from a psychological standpoint, trying to be perfect could drive a person insane and affect others around them negatively. Demanding perfection, etc. Depending on your definition of perfection. And there are so many different views of the bible out there.

I would just try to live the 10 commandments in Exodus 20 and the greater laws given by Christ to love God and your neighbor as yourself: Matthew 22:36-40, etc Matthew 5 and avoid the lake of fire written of in revelation: Revelation 21:7-8.

Peace not turmoil. Sometimes trying to be perfect and failing will lead to inner turmoil, but peace is understanding you child nature. Even grown ups upon the earth are still just children to God considering they've only been alive for 90+ years, when God is ageless. God Bless :)

To understand what Jesus means you have to keep in view the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount. He says in the beginning: "Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." This would have been very surprising for his disciples to hear because the Scribes and Pharisees were often thought of as those who kept God's Law most strictly.

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus' exposition of God's Law - the 10 commandments. It's purpose is at least twofold:
  1. To show us the true demands of God's Law (not only refraining from murder, but refraining from anger, etc...) and thus call us to a deeper discipleship than ever before.

  2. To show us our true need for grace. God's Law demands more of us than we ever dared and we are more sinful than we realize. The Sermon on the Mount helps us see our sin more profoundly as it shows us God's demands more clearly. We should walk away from the Sermon on the Mount more fully convinced that we could never be justified by being perfect as God is perfect. We are far too sinful. Salvation, then, must come as a gift of free grace.
This is why Jesus begins the sermon by saying: "Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Those who are poor have nothing except need. We must come to Jesus as needy sinners in need of his grace, righteousness, and Holy Spirit in order to be justified and made able to obey God's Law from the heart. Since we cannot be perfect, we need his perfection to be reckoned to our account.

That's something else I hear a lot "strive". Nowhere does Jesus say strive. And to my knowledge there is no verse that says that. I just searched for one in (KJV and Geneva). So where does this word strive pop up from because so many insert that word?

I hope that didn't read sarcastically. :)

Luke 13:24 - “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

Can a destitute 5 year old child in a place where children are kept in some country,
do anything to guarantee on their own that they get themselves adopted by rich parents ?

... no.

Neither can anyone become mature in Christ on their own,
nor even be born again by the will of man ....

it is only by the Will of Yahweh (God) in heaven that anyone is born again, borne in Christ Jesus in to the Kingdom of Heaven.

I’m not certain. I am certain however that I have not yet achieved it so I keep on trying to do better each day learning from my mistakes.

Kindly meditate on this below verse.....

2 Corinthians 3:18
"...we all, with unveiled face, reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory into glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit..."

We strive towards perfection till we live in this earth, but not getting perfected instantly today itself. Day by day we give ourselves to our Lord to transform ourselves to become like Christ in everything. In precise to understand the word "Perfect" is really a huge thing to comprehend, but Paul is explaining it superbly.

Philipians 3:10-14
"I may know him(Jesus) and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already received this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on if indeed I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ. Brothers, I do not consider myself to have laid hold of it. But I do one thing, forgetting the things behind and straining toward the things ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore as many as are perfect, let us hold this opinion, and if you think anything differently, God will reveal this also to you".

We need to forget the things behind, which is our present life, but have to strain towards perfection, which is our ultimate goal.

Revelation 2:26
"..the one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, I will give him authority over the nations..."

Be strong in faith and keep doing the good works of Jesus untill the end. We will reach the perfection. Is it possible? Yes only by the grace of GOD through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:16
"The Spirit himself confirms to our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him" .

GOD bless....

To answer the earlier question: Humans would not be able to be perfect because they come from earthly parents. Jesus parents were Mary (earthly) and God (divine). That is an insurmountable difference for humans.

Do we even know what perfect means?

I think important thing to understand first is, eternal life is not a reward for perfect life, it is a gift for righteous people:

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Mat. 25:46

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

And I have understood righteousness means right understanding, or wisdom of the just that makes person want and do right things. Righteous person understands it is good to love as the Bible tells and righteous person wants to do so, because of that. It is not about getting reward, but about doing what one knows is good and right. It maybe that even righteous person does mistakes, but if person is righteous, he regrets, when he knows he has done wrongly, like in this:

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Luke 18:10-14

Bible tells eternal life is for righteous and righteous lives, because he is loyal to God:

Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.
Habakkuk 2:4

If person is loyal (has faith), he keeps God’s commandments, which are really in, “love your neighbor as yourself”. All Law is in that.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not give false testimony," "You shall not covet," [TR adds "You shall not give false testimony,"] and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love doesn't harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:8-10

I think we should not worry about are we perfect, because I think we are not good to judge that, but if we love like the Bible teaches, I think everything will go well. :)

Also, about perfection:

"Don't think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill. For most assuredly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Mat. 5:17-19

That means, imperfect people can enter Kingdom of Heaven?

The word righteous can mean a few different definitions.

righteous

G1342

Lemma:

δίκαιος

Transliteration:

díkaios

Pronounce:

dik'-ah-yos

Part of Speech:

Adjective

Language:

greek

Description:

1) righteous, observing divine laws a) in a wide sense, upright, righteous, virtuous, keeping the commands of God

1) of those who seem to themselves to be righteous, who pride themselves to be righteous, who pride themselves in their virtues, whether real or imagined

2) innocent, faultless, guiltless

3) used of him whose way of thinking, feeling, and acting is wholly conformed to the will of God, and who therefore needs no rectification in the heart or life a) only Christ truly

4) approved of or acceptable of God b) in a narrower sense, rendering to each his due and that in a judicial sense, passing just judgment on others, whether expressed in words or shown by the manner of dealing with them

I believe in Job’s case he was approved or accepted by God. Now referring to us today we can be righteous in the sense that we have been made right with God. I’m not sure if we can actually live without sin in this world. I’m still trying tho.

Salvation is by Grace through Faith, so also is how perfection is obtained , by Grace through Faith.

The problem is " Faith " and how it's correctly fulfilled has been lost for many years. So how Salvation or perfection is obtained is a moot point.

Not sure what you are implying here. Can you elaborate?

Perfection is something that we will not see until we are in heaven.

Some may come close for a (brief) second?

I think I may have tasted that?

Sin keeps us far away.

We're supposed to strive for perfection, as that God's ultimate goal for us; He didn't create us to be sinners after all. We're to do the best we can with what were given, failing sometimes perhaps but always rising to the challenge again. Otherwise we're lukewarm Christians, at best

He did Create each person, gave life at the point of conception.
Children are born to parents, parents who usually know the children will need trained in all things concerning life.
Parents who know the children will make mistakes and need to be corrected, raised with discipline (order and right living) , to the parents some things will be unpredictable.

God created each person knowing already all that was going to take place, nothing unpredictable.
