With the end of 2018 comes the near-certain reality that some critters, after millions of years of existence on Earth, are gone for good.

There's little question that humanity's continued exploitation of wild animals and the depletion of their habitats have left many species either clinging to existence, or at worst, extinct. Today's extinctions are happening 100 to 1000 times faster than the expected, natural rate of die-offs. It's grim.

"The topic gets a hold of people in a way that few things do," Sea McKeon, a biology professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland and co-host of "The Naturalist Podcast," said in an interview.

2017 saw the extinctions of multiple lizard species and a bat. This year, scientists brought news that three bird species that were thought potentially extinct, have gone completely extinct.

These are the animals that went extinct in 2018

Mankind has killed off many many many men, and many many many animals (and even plants/ trees) .....

though not one of any of those that man has killed
was over a few hundred years old..... well a tree might have been a little over a thousand years old .....

I think that is so sad to hear.

Hearing stories like this reminds of me of the following quote by Chief Luther Standing Bear.

“The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man's heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too.”

So true and so sad.

On a side note, your response reminded me of this meme.

Sadly, there will be many times more undiscovered species that have gone extinct, unknown and mourned only in general.

So true. As an example, the Eskimo curlew was one of the most numerous shorebirds in the western Arctic at one time. However, approximately two million birds killed per year in the late 1800s. The bird is currently listed as critically endangered, but there has not been a reliable sighting of the Eskimo curlew since 1987, so the Eskimo curlew may very well be extinct.

Not sure what your post has to do with this thread. The only ones facing trials would seem to be the plants and animals we are whipping out.

  • Experts calculate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year.
  • If the low estimate of the number of species out there is true - i.e. that there are around 2 million different species on our planet** - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year.
  • If the upper estimate of species numbers is true - that there are 100 million different species co-existing with us on our planet - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year.

"Faster than expected" just says that smart people make very bad predictions?

Yes, thats what it means. Animals die out quickly because scientists are dumb. Thats all thats important. Thank you.

In the trials , including being beaten, jailed, arrested, and executed,

what does the Scripture Say ?

Not depressed, like was posted. We are overcomers by the Blood of the Lamb, and by the word of our testimony of Jesus.

And the strength of our JOY, is our daily abiding in union with Jesus and with the Father.

Some animals die slowly, by chronic, constant, ongoing poisoning.

A lot of people die daily because of geniuses/ scientists/ pharmakeia/ government agencies and armies....

i.e. not because of dumb scientists - 'smart' ones, so-called, can be lots worse.
