Mary was Judean but I'm not so sure she was a direct descendant of David. It really doesn't matter because with her marriage to David she enters his family.

with her marriage to WHO? think you better read somemore.

After a thousand years and 28 generations practically every living Jew could claim some relationship to David. Well, except for the Ethiopian Jews.
Not likely, inheritance was tied to lieage. The Levites in particular had a distintive place in Jewish life.

There are the Ethiopian Jews that believe that David and the queen of Sheba had a child--they claim linage to David also!

Matthew traces legal lines.
Luke traces blood lines.

You have it exactly right... The reason why the differences is as they say...".in the pudding.",, All four of the Gospels, wrote about Jesus differently.

Matthew was a Levi and presents Jesus as a Jew, The Messiah -The Lion of the Tribe of Judah..

Mark sees Him as a "suffering servant" (which is why there is no generations in Mark)....

Luke (a Doctor) sees Him as the Son of MAN. Luke's Geneology is the same as Matthews through David. Then Luke as you say, takes a different direction From Nathan to Mary.

John sees as GOD.

I was just reading through the 1st chapter of Matthew and all the begats and I read something I never paid attention to before. Joseph, Mary's husband is a descendant of King David not Mary. So I was trying to find what Lineage Mary is from. I can't find it, even when I did a web search. So who is Mary a descendant of?

There is another area of Scripture often over looked. A very tender time when Gabriel came to Mary.
God sent Gabriel to Mary who told her she would bear the Son of God and that He would be of the line of Judah and through the line of David. Why would God use a different lineage when He has done everything perfectly, even twice (Matthew 1/Luke 3) keeping Joseph in the headship as necessary for the Jews. Begs the question: Would God send His Archangel to a maiden from a different tribe? She did not rebuke Gabriel and say "Well, I'm from the tribe of Benjamin so this isn't going to work." No, I believe she had to be from the fleshly line of Judah through David. Her only question was "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" And in the end she submits. “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”

The passage in Luke 1:
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her."

He states that the Son of God would be over the house of Jacob which means He is over all of Israel's children (vs 8).
This is stated in Jacob's prophecy over his sons in Genesis 49
8 “Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
Your father’s children shall bow down before you.
9 Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
Until Shiloh (tranquility/rest) comes;
And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
11 Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes."

I believe the flesh also had to qualify completely as inferred in Genesis 1:15
"And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

To not have a word that ties Mary directly to the line of Judah would leave an argument that she could have been anyone even a Moabite or Egyptian, etc, but she couldn't. She was going to raise the Son of God. She had to be Jewish and if His flesh had to satisfy Gen 3:15 and 49:8, then the flesh had to be of the line of Judah. Gabriel affirmed this. This is my belief.

Hope this helps.
Blessings and shalom

Both are Davidic Jews (of Judah). Joseph through Solomon and Mary through Nathan. She provides the lineage and Joseph the legality.

Hello Heart2Soul.. The answer is both of them Joseph and Mary are descendants of King David. Let me expand this for you!

God had already announced his plans to have the messiah (a Future King of Judea) born to a virgin and from the house of Judah or King David. There was one catch! God had placed a blood curse on Jeconiah (also known as Jehoiachin) which prevented any male from prospering (not being able to rule from or sit upon the Throne of David). Thus, this would not allow Jesus (if born of Joseph) to be a King of Judea, as the prophecies announced.

A big problem. The solution is simple. Jesus will be born of another in the royal line of King David that has no such curse upon it. (Jer 22:30).

In the synoptic Gospels, Matthew gives the genealogy of Judah from the Levi (Jewish) point of view. Matthew traces the line from Abraham through David, Solomon to Joseph who will become the "Legal" father of Jesus. (Mat 1:1-16).

In another of the Gospels, Luke (a doctor), portrays Jesus as the "Son of Man". Here Luke traces the genealogy from Mary to Heli (her father) to Nathan (2nd surviving son of Bathsheba) to David, to Abraham, to Adam. (Luke 3:23-38)..Notice the genealogy is backwards

Hope this helps.

and the Gospels say:As pointed out before, both genealogies are Joseph's"

Ah, I see what you are saying. Royal and legal.

I just told the story of these genealogies a little more for a better understanding.

It is hard to believe what someone says if their answers are not backed up.

You said Luke's Gospel gave Mary's lineage. The Gospel doesn't say that. It is an assumption people make in order to try and get around the apparent contradiction between the two genealogies.
